Lite-On 24X SATA Internal DVD+/-RW Drive Optical Drive IHAS124-14 Review:

UPDATED with tale of woe

I burned about a half dozen CD-R with this unit, and maybe a dozen DVD for data backups. I also used it to read about 50 CD-R data backups I had burned in years past with a different burner. It started failing to read CD-R but I assumed it was a problem with the old optical media. I start experimenting with CD-ROMs and CD-DA; it won't read/write CD media at all anymore although DVD media works.

I contacted the seller about an RMA. They advised me to contact Lite-On.
So I contacted Lite-on, who said get the RMA from the seller.
Ok. I told the seller, who asked to see Lite-On's response, which I'd already provided in the email. :-
Then the seller asked for the serial number, which I'd already provided in email. :-( I don't like this pattern.
Seller says they are in the process of procuring an RMA. Ok. I will name names if this blows up, but if they come through I will put it all behind me.

Because this can take a while I figured I'd order another one and keep any RMA replacement as a spare. I noticed there was a refurb available from a different seller, and I've had great experience with refurbs in the past. Seller (M-Wave) shipped very fast. IMO there is no way this drive was refurbed, or even inspected.

The door wouldn't open. Weird. No grinding or hanging, just a gentle whir. I opened the drawer manually with the paperclip trick and saw the drawer drive belt was loose in the drive (see pic). I was able to retrieve it and install it on the pulleys with a pick. Joy!

No, despair. The drive clacks and won't stay closed whether or not a disc is present. It sounds like maybe the drive head is not lifting into place correctly. I put in for a replacement but apparently Prime only does refunds. Fine.

I gave up on this model drive and just bought a Samsung instead:

A great drive, just what the insiders have come to expect from Lite-On. Funny name, fantastic burners.

Asus 24x DVD-RW Serial-ATA Internal OEM Optical Drive DRW-24B1ST Black(user guide is included) Review:

Well for $22 you can't really do much better than this optical drive.
My last Asus DVD-RW croaked after 4 years of solid use and I went ahead and ordered this (OEM) Asus DVD-RW optical. It worked for about 20 days and then began acting up. I called Amazon and explained how the new Asus DVD-RW I bought was no longer working, fully expecting to be forced to return a $19.50 DVD-RW that is not worth my time to send back.
Amazon stepped up! When (Asus would not!) and sent me a replacement drive that works just fine. Thanks to Amazon's sales and tech teams for allowing me a new drive without me being forced to send the original back to them. This was customer service above the call of duty and why I shop mostly at amazons online store.
Sincerely, Steven Level

I thought about buying a Plextor but the reviews are pretty bad for the 3 units I have read reviews about and the price was twice the Asus or close to it.

LG Internal 24x Super Multi with M-DISC Support DVD Burner (GH24NSC0B) Bundle with Nero 12 Essentials Burning Software + Cable Kit Review:

Awesome and fast drive! Quiet, too. Hooked up in a flash, power and connection cords were included (bonus!).

Be aware though, that the Nero software is only a TRIAL VERSION, although nowhere on the ad (from which I purchased) mentioned this, and is the only reason I got this particular one from this particular seller (Platinum Micro, Inc.) as other sellers had the Drive at a little lower price. Although when I did call them (Platinum Micro, Inc.) to ask about the version discrepancy (the picture on the ad does not state it is a Trial Version, but the CD I got clearly did), they did allow me a small credit on my purchase, for which I was entirely satisfied with. If getting a full version of this bundled software is important to you, I suggest you contact and confirm with the seller before you buy this Drive whether it is or is not a Trial Version.

As far as the Drive itself goes, it plays/burns perfectly, and at top speed. Am completely happy with my new Drive, and wouldn't hesitate to purchase this brand/model number again.

Lenovo Slim DVD Burner DB65 (888015471) Review:

What I liked about this drive was that I opened the box, plugged it in without installing anything and it started working right away. I primarily use my drive to burn CDs for work and the burn speed is the same as the drive I replaced (a good thing) and the program I used recognized it with no issues.

My only concern is that it feels flimsy. Its lightness is great for portability and moderate usage, but if you burn like 30 CDs in a row a time like I do, it doesn't feel like it will be as durable as the more sturdy drive this is replacing. I feel like I have to be extra gentle with it when I'm putting in and taking out discs.

While I've only had limited time to use it this far, it works as expected and am generally happy with it.

Lite-On 24X SATA Internal DVD+/-RW Drive Optical Drive IHAS124-14 + Nero 12 Essentials Burning Software + Sata Cable Kit Review:

Needed a relatively inexpensive way to back up to physical media, and after some research I settled on this guy. If you read the reviews, you’ll see ratings all over the place. Some people apparently don’t realize that some operating systems don’t come installed with DVD player software— which should t be surprising, considering how few computers come with optical drives these days!

Some people also complained that it came with a DEMO of the Nero software, which isn’t made clear in the product listing. Enough people must have complained, because my disc came with a paper sleeve that had a big white sticker that said “This Trial version will NOT EXPIRE after 30 days”.

Installation was a snap in my tower case, which is “tool-free”— but for anyone that has a conventional case, be aware that this came with the SATA cable (for data) but NO SCREWS. I’ve had many cases in the past where the optical drive slots only had a bare metal cage, so be aware that you may need to buy 2-4 small metal screws to hold the drive in the case.

I deducted a star because the SATA cable I received was nonfunctional. Luckily I had a spare lying around from a past project, but if I hadn’t I would have RMA’d the whole thing. I knew it was the cable because the drive had power (it spun up, and the tray would come out) but Windows didn’t recognize the drive.

Once I replaced the cable, it was auto detected by Windows without any 3rd party drivers.

It seems to work as expected.

abcGoodefg Original DVD Drive Replacement Repair Part for Nintendo Wii Review:

I have a Wii that is very old by now. I got it probably a year after they were introduced and it has worked perfectly ever since.. until the other day when my daughters stuck a disk in and it wouldn't read it. Well, after poking around and realizing I didn't have a tri-lobe screwdriver, I decided I had 2 choices. I could get a tri-lobe screwdriver, take apart the Wii, and hope that just using a cotton swab and alcohol on the laser would bring it back to life, or for barely more than twice the cost of the screwdriver, I could get a brand new DVD player WITH the screwdriver. Well, DUH, that was an easy choice! I ordered the DVD player on Saturday. We have a distribution center about 50 miles north of me, so I had the DVD player by mid day Sunday, and shortly afterwards, with the new DVD player installed, the Wii was back to normal. If you've worked on PCs or laptops, then this is a super easy install. I did clean the laser on the old DVD player and set it aside just in case I need one in another 10 years!

Lsgoodcare PCB Board Assembly DVD Drive Replacement Repair Part Compatible for Nintendo Wii Review:

My Wii would only accept Wii discs occasionally and made horrible clicking noises in the process. I am now an expert at disassembling my Wii after multiple attempts to clean and repair and found this item on Amazon for a very reasonable price. I saw other pricier options, but was in a bind because I got Mario Kart and couple Wii Wheels for my daughter for Christmas and needed the item fast and Lsgoodcare delivered. I had the Wii disassembled and waiting, so installation was literally 10 minutes and now Wii game loads without an issue. One caveat is GameCube discs are NOT accepted, but minor problem considering my others options were spending $80 for a repair, buy a used Wii or paying for a Wii U. I would also like to note the seller does not have GameCube discs in the description, so I anticipated them not working.

Asus DRW-24B1ST-KIT 24x Internal DVD Burner + Nero 12 Essentials Burning Software + Sata Cable Kit Review:

I will go into in-depth detail on any item since other popular reviews have given excellent information, so in quick summary:
My Build (all components work flawlessly):
1. Zalman ATX Mid Tower Case R1 (Nice looking case, provides room for everything, adequate cooling and allows good cable management).

2. ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-H GAMING LGA1151 DDR4 HDMI DVI M.2 Z370 ATX Motherboard with Gigabit LAN and USB 3.1 for 8th Generation Intel Core Processors (Great expandability and room for future upgrades, enough USB ports for most applications).

3. EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti GAMING, 8GB GDDR5, EVGA OCX Scanner OC, White LED, DX12OSD Support (PXOC) Graphics Card 08G-P4-5670-KR (Great balance of price and performance).

4. Intel Core i7-8700 Desktop Processor 6 Cores up to 4.6GHz Turbo LGA1151 300 Series 65W BX80684i78700 (Came with a thermal solution (fan) but I used the Cooler Master - see below).

5. 2 of Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD - CT500MX500SSD1(Z) (Man this is fast, Win10 boots in about 5/6 secs. and programs open fast as well).

6. Crucial MX500 500GB 3D NAND SATA M.2 Type 2280SS Internal SSD - CT500MX500SSD4

7. CORSAIR TX Series TX850M 850W 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply (Adequate power supply for into the future and has ample connectors).

8. Corsair LPX 32GB DRAM 3000MHz C15 Memory Kit for DDR4 Systems (Adequate for my application for work and gaming)

9. Cooler Master Hyper RR-212E-20PK-R2 LED CPU Cooler with PWM Fan, Four Direct Contact Heat Pipes (Instructions are poor, system builders with experience will have no problem, first timers will eventually figure it out. Comes with all you need including thermal paste).

10. ASUS MX239H 23-Inch, Full HD 1920x1080 IPS, Audio by Bang & Olufsen ICEpower HDMI VGA Frameless Monitor (Really nice monitor for the price though those heavy gamers will want something far superior. Built in Audio is good enough for You Tube and regular use, but I personally find its not so good for Netflix, look at some decent speakers based on your needs).

11. Sabrent 74-In-1 3.5" Internal Flash Media Card Reader/writer with USB Port , Black (CR-USNT) (For the cost and convince you can’t go wrong).

12. Asus DRW-24B1ST-KIT 24x Internal DVD Burner + Nero 12 Essentials Burning Software + Sata Cable Kit (Obsolete in some ways but good to have at times as some persons still give work items on CD).

13. Backlit Gaming Mouse, Gaming Keyboard, Large Gaming Mouse Pad, PC Computer Gaming Headset with Microphone Combo, S101-BA Redragon RGB LED Backlit 104 Key Gaming Keyboard with Wrist Rest (No issues at all, good feel and responsiveness and mouse drivers are available on the website. The headset sounds good).

OSGEAR Internal 9.5mm slim SATA 8x DVDRW CD DVD RW Rom Burner Writer Laptop PC Mac Tray Loading Optical Drive Device Review:

For 22 dollars this is a great replacement for my Windows 10 HP laptop (Envy).
To install: I powered OFF, removed battery, installed drive, put battery back in, plugged back in, then powered up, but the device did not show up.
I then put in a music CD, but still nothing happened.
I even used 'Device Manager' to scan for new equipment, but that didn't find any new device or help me in any way.
Finally, I rebooted laptop a second time, and now the device shows up properly, and works perfectly! For some reason I needed TWO reboots. Everything is fine now.
Very happy!
