Rats are amusing little animals. If you feed them once or twice a day in a regular bowl, they have a propensity of hiding food. When you notice that they bury all that food in the bedding and discover a lot of food that is being thrown out during cleaning time, it can be annoying at first.I can focus on giving them occasional treats because I don't have to give them regular food on a daily basis thanks to this feeder. Additionally, food stockpiling came to an end. Because they are aware that they have access to plenty of food, my rats no longer save food.Small holes on the bottom of the feeder allow small crumbs to be automatically filtered away as food is given out. This function dumps the crumbs directly underneath the feeder while also helping to keep the inside of the feeder clean. By placing a small pan underneath and emptying it each time you clean the cage, you may easily get around this problem.

Update: In the end, I decided to keep it!It worked perfectly while I went on vacation and only set it for breakfast (leaving dinner to the pet sitter).Despite my cat's intense desire for food, she surprisingly leaves the filled feeder alone. She can't smell the food in there, in my opinion.My initial assessmentThis is ideal for pet owners who wish to automatically feed their four-legged children every day. This kind of feeder enables you to throw a ton of food inside and let it go, as opposed to filling individual meal chambers.However, I only really need something for the weekends and quick excursions because I rely on my small fuzzy alarm clock to wake me up in the mornings. I'm giving mine back and switching to the alternative style.It has a power button on the bottom, so I could easily fill it up and turn it off during the week, but I'd feel horrible making fun of my little long-tailed darling in the living room with a dormant food container.One meal at a time is not appropriate for this kind of...It didn't really work when I threw one meal's worth of food in the trash. The revolving rudder that propels food into the exit chamber doesn't extend very far and can't sweep very far out from the center. So I reached inside and personally scooped everything into the chamber. Its primary purpose is to maintain fullness.It appears to be airtight enough to deter hungry animals. My cat was pawing at the food dish in an attempt to get more, but she ignored the cylinder.This seems to be a difficult problem to solve. In my perspective, a cat's paw could not reach up inside to obtain food. In the photographs I've attached, you can see where the food chamber exits and where a stiff plastic brush guard is protecting it. I don't believe small paws can get to the food exit because of the distance between it and the hole leading to the dish.With the help of a difficult button, the top of the chamber can be opened. It's so awkward that I actually needed two hands each time. That ought to deter your cat burglar, then.It plugs in, a huge plus.The drawback: The first morning I used it, it awakened me up. Suddenly, I heard my own voice yell from the adjacent room, "Tinker! Time to eat!" Then there are the noises of a motor starting up, pellets hitting plastic, and another call to my cat. To sleep in was the whole goal! So, in a way, the purpose was defeated.However, if you live in a two-story home or sleep sounder than I do, it might not be an issue. And there's no need to document anything.It is set up for four mealtimes. Establish the time and portion size for meal one, then go on to meal two. Repeat for meal three.When there is no food, it beeps at you. a wonderful trait.To alert you when the batteries are running low, there is a battery indicator light. It requires three Ds, but they are not necessary. Although you can use the plug alone, batteries make a good backup in case of power interruptions or cord-pullers with whiskers.Hope this is useful!

I want to address a problem that has been brought up by other reviews. The door "doesn't remain shut and is too narrow."When has cutting hay not been a messy task, I ask? I have used a variety of hay holders, including just dumping it on the cage floor, but I always end up with a mess. It's not a result of the container I'm using; rather, it's a result of how messy hay is when you take it out of the bag.I usually load the hay ball over something else that I can quickly wipe the stray hay off of in order to avoid this issue. You can stuff it inside a larger hay bag if you have one. If not, put it over a trash can, a table, or another location where you don't mind having hay or where you can simply clean it off.I was using a Ware Manufacturing Hay Ball before purchasing this hay holder, but I am much delighted now that I have it.I just received this yesterday, so I'm unable to comment on the door's inability to stay closed. In a few months, I'll return to provide an update.

I received a green one in the mail (I believe it was random), and it functions perfectly. This definitely keeps the cage tidy longer than before when I would simply pile it in a corner on the cage floor. I like that it has a protected lid that can't be opened when it is attached to the cage. This tiny design was clever since I've seen other hay feeders without lids, and Guinea Pigs would get trapped inside attempting to get at the hay remnants and die:(. My two pigs run through it in a matter of days, so I do wish it was wider so I could fit more, but it's not a big concern.The salt lick, which I believe is more for rabbits, is not something they are interested in.
