Sonos Move - Smart Portable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Speaker with Alexa Built In Review:

Even though I believe that I have offered my fair share of constructive criticism over the years, I must admit that I have been a fan of SONOS for a very long time. I believe they have hit a home run with the SONOS MOVE!What I enjoy is this:1. It sounds wonderful! Here's why: The bass never becomes distorted and is powerful, even outside. If you want, it can play incredibly loud, but it also sounds great at modest volume levels. Amazingly, they managed to make the high-frequency and mid-range sound consistent throughout the speaker's side and front projections, rather than only in the "sweet spot" in front like previous speakers. It sounds authentic and is exquisitely detailed.2. It looks fantastic. Here's why: It has the same gorgeous looks that I've come to expect from SONOS, but there's something about the product's material selection that elevates it to a higher level. It doesn't take up any more space than, say, a SONOS ONE and blends in perfectly with my other SONOS speakers.3. Automatic Trueplay - This feature ensures that the speaker always sounds its best by automatically adjusting the sound based on where you position it. This was probably quite necessary, but it actually works. I placed MOVE in some difficult locations both indoors and outside, and it automatically fixed itself and resumed sounding fantastic after about 20 or 30 seconds.4. The WiFi range — I took MOVE outdoors and started to walk around the outside of my house and into the yard, both of which were fairly distant, and it never lost connection. Here, SONOS done something unique to the WiFi to make it incredibly durable.5. Bluetooth - Bluetooth allows you to connect even when there is no WiFi available. I like having that function so I can travel without worrying about whether there will be WiFi or not.6. It feels sturdy - It exudes a wonderful sense of stability and balance. Incorporated within the design is a handle that is located in the back. It feels balanced and secure when I set it down on grass and sand.7. Stereo pair - I only have one, but with it, I can fill my entire yard with amazing sound. However, I like to think that if I ever acquired another one, I could put them up as a stereo pair and have a genuine outdoor concert!8. It is resistant to weather; if you are caught in the rain or it gets dirty, you can just rinse it off with a hose. Although I intend to take good care of MOVE, it's comforting to know that it has this degree of weatherproofing.9. It features voice control; similar to the SONOS ONE, it contains microphones that let you use the Google and Alexa speech assistants. That is useful, especially if you are grilling outside.10. Charging base – Unlike other companies, it includes a beautiful charging base and does not charge extra for it.What I find offensive:1. Travel bag - It comes with a stylish bag, but I'm not sure how durable or protective it will be in practice. However, for $400, it seems like they might have included a nylon cushioned bag with handle and accessory compartment. I'm sure that SONOS will eventually sell a travel bag accessory.2. USB-C charger - It's fantastic that it comes with a good charging base, but you could take the charger with you more easily if it were a detachable USB-C charger. Although I'm sure SONOS will eventually sell a USB-C charger attachment, for $400, I believe this should have been included. This is a superb product all around. This, in my opinion, is by far the best product that SONOS has ever produced. Having a "really wireless" wireless speaker is so wonderful!

Two Room Set with all-new Sonos One - Smart Speaker with Alexa voice control built-In. Compact size with incredible sound for any room. (White) Review:

I was considering installing whole-house audio when I first bought my house. It became clear to me after researching multi-room systems on Amazon that they wouldn't be inexpensive: the cost of the speakers, controllers, PLUS the cost of installing wiring throughout the house. I discovered the wireless solution offered by the SONOS PLAY:1 to be more affordable and to boot, to have superior speakers. Since then, I've used the late-2017-released SONOS ONE speakers. The Sonos ONE (Gen 2) was released in 2019, however except from two areas—a faster processor (for future expansion) and Bluetooth LE—it now offers no discernible enhancements over its predecessor (for speaker setup via Bluetooth at this time). Here are the benefits and drawbacks that influenced my choice of the Sonos system.NOTE 1: Using the PLAY:1 or ONE DOES NOT require a Sonos BRIDGE. Please refer to this review's INSTALLATION section.NOTE 2: The PLAY:1 is identical to the ONE but does not support voice or touch. The PLAY:1 is less expensive as a result.NOTE 3: Other than a faster processor and Bluetooth LE built-in, the ONE (Gen 2) is nearly identical to the ONE (Gen 1). As a result, it is marginally more future-proof.Hi-Fi is a plus. Compared to the multi-room, wired systems I looked at for less than $500, speakers sound better.- Value at resale. Your home's resale value isn't significantly increased by wired speakers. Why spend $1,000 on an audio system if you're just going to relocate or sell the house and not use it? I could bring my pricey speakers to my new house because of wireless technology.- The ability to move freely. With wireless, you may move the speakers around the entire house as you like. I could even broadcast music from my house for neighborhood block parties by connecting the speakers to an extension line out to the street. Alternately, move it to your backyard. They are water-resistant, but unless you put them inside of protective shells, I wouldn't use them as permanent outdoor speakers.A IMPORTANT NOTE RELATING TO WIFI: Each SONOS component functions as its own wireless client and repeater. Separate from your home WiFi, Sonos wireless is a private wireless "mesh" system. How does that make you feel? It uses its own wireless to transmit music, leaving your house WiFi unaffected. That has another advantage, which I'll go into following the installation note below. Most Sonos parts have two network ports, although PLAY:1 and ONE are not among them. This indicates that you can connect your laptop to the second jack on the speaker after plugging the component into the network jack.- Alexa integration: although still under development, the speakers now support voice control. Over time, Sonos enhances the features through software updates. The ONE will include Google Assistant support in 2019, giving it a more appealing alternative to having Google Home and Amazon Echo in the house. I do become irritated much more frequently when Alexa doesn't understand me or my request. My entire family appreciates how well Google Assistant can understand us and provide better responses. We are eagerly anticipating Sonos' addition of the Google Assistant to the ONE. Notably, we also don't like Alexa on the Echo Dot. Just how much better is Google Assistant at understanding requests and presenting information? In the area of automation, Alexa is a little more sophisticated. However, that is the subject of a different review.[Update 5/2019: Google Assistant connection has now been implemented, and wow, the voice recognition is SO MUCH BETTER! Actually, our entire family is content. Installation comes first; let's discuss tech. To connect to your home network, you only need one Sonos component (any of the PLAY speakers, Soundbar, Bridge, etc.) That component becomes a wireless access point as a result (or as consumers tend to call it, a "Wifi router".)

JBL Pulse 3 Wireless Bluetooth IPX7 Waterproof Speaker (Black) (Renewed) Review:

Such a great speaker. I can hear it all around my house since it is so loud. I like that I can easily switch between the inputs by connecting it to both my phone and my laptop. Although a little pointless, I'm learning to adore the light effect.I grabbed this speaker to replace one that I got from Walmart for a much less money. Although I can't recall the the model, it was an early 808 Glo. The volume and sound quality are excellent when compared to the 808 speaker. Even though I'm not a big audiophile, I can tell the difference. Of course, the JBL cost approximately three times as much. However, the 808 featured a feature called auto-shut off that I greatly miss. I've occasionally forgotten to turn the speaker off before heading to work. When I arrive home, my speaker is completely dead. I suspect this feature isn't existent because when my phone leaves the Bluetooth's range, it simply connects to my always-present laptop and does nothing for the next eight hours (or until the battery dies). The Blutooth range is also a little bit smaller than the 808. I've discovered that if I leave the speaker in the kitchen and take my phone with me as I go about the house, the connection will break. The 808 had no issues with that. I'm not sure how far the range is, but because my home is small—only 746 square feet—probably it's not very far—maybe 15-20 feet?

Klipsch 1063275 Gate Playfi Gateway Wireless Multi–Room Hub Review:

After reading the reviews here I ordred two Gates, one to link my home theater and one to connect a Paradigm Active A2 speaker in my kitchen. First I downloaded the Klipsch app to my fire tablet. Next I switched the device on, launched the program ab=nd tapped "configure system". The program asked for my wifi software, and bingo, I got connected. I did find it helpful to hold down the wifi connect button on the device for 10 seconds to help the app connect to the device. Next while the device was near my wireless router I was prompted to update the software. Once updated I selected my music services, entered my passwords and was ready to play tunes. I grabbed the 3.5 mm cable and linked right into the Paradigm speaker which has it own amp built in, set up the "zone" as kitchen, clicked play and couldn't believe what I was hearing. This was a nice, clean, high end sound. Good bass and nice clean resolution.Next I repeated the above steps and connected my second device to the home theater. In a direct A/B comparison with the Gate and the streamer that is part of my Marantz 7702 processor it was very close. The Marantz took the edge but the fact that a $25 streamer could sound this close to a $2000 processor is amazing. Now I read the reviews about the software but my experience was I love it. In my office I use a BlueSound Node and the Bluos software. I like the Playfi software better because I can flip back and forth between the music service player and the playfi controls by hitting a little icon. I individual volume sliders for each zone. I like that I can group zones together as pre-sets. Count me a Klipsch/DTS Play-Fi fan and I have already order more Play-Fi products to connect my entire home.UPDATE: After the Gate broke in a couple days I did some critical listening in my media room in 2 channel "pure direct" mode. I was surprised at what I was hearing. This sounded like an analog source more than a digital source. Then I remembered, this is from Klipsch and maybe they voiced it to sound like vinyl. The music is sooo relaxed when you play it through the Gate it just flows.Out of curiosity I took the Gate from the kitchen into my office system two have an A/B comparison with the Bluesound Node. I only listened to HIFI tracks, not MQA to make it a fair comparison. The Node is a great product and I have enjoyed it for over a year.I preferred the Gate, so much so that the only reason I am keeping the Node is for MQA. The Gate seemed to capture music that the Node left out. The bass seemed fuller and smoother through the Gate, in the Node it was a little more "boomy". You could hear the inhalations and and breathing between phrases in soft jazz singers through the Gate, it seemed this subtle information was left out through the Node. After listening to the Gate I feel like I really want to compare a lot more music but I think this is a sleeper product that was tripped up by the software. Klipsch released this product in 2016 and that version of the software was not ready for primetime. The 2019 version has gone through multiple updates since then and I liked it as much as Bluos for navigating music playlists and better than Bluos for controlling my whole house system. The Gate has a "critical listening" mode you need to engage for listening to hirez and I found I preferred that mode for Tidal HIFI tracks as well. When you use that mode you are limited to streaming to one device.Update on the Gate- I hooked up the analog outs on my Sony Blueray player to the line in on the Gate and was able to stream CD's thoughout the house! I tried both redbook and 24/96 and it worked great. No need to run speaker wires and multi channel amps. I have just added DTS Play Fi components throughout the various rooms in my home and it just works. I have also streamed Quboz in Hirez and it works great too. The added benefit is with Play-Fi components you can have hirez streaming in any room you want.To listen in Hirez you have to engage "critical listening" mode and can only stream in hirez to one zone at a time. So far I have a Gate installed in my main home theater, to an active (powered) speaker in the kitchen, and just ordered another one for the HT in the man cave. The Play Fi software is working great. I can start playing tunes in one room and then add rooms by just tapping on them in the app. When I bought the most recent Gate I added a 4 year warranty for an extra $2 . It doesn't get more cheerful than having music playing throughout the house and having it under total control from a kindle tablet. Cheers!

Sonos One (Gen 1) - Voice Controlled Smart Speaker with Amazon Alexa Built-in (White) Review:

I am a 70-year-old man who struggles to stay current because, well, technology is crucial. Like many others, when I received my last paycheck, my chance to test out new technology with the systems administrator or a Millennial coworker also abruptly ended. Let me simply describe what this Sonos One was intended to replace because I believe it's crucial that you understand the viewpoint from which a review is written. Our only source of music was a 10-year-old Sony "shelf system" that was only tuned to the local classical music channel and had a broken CD player. In addition to having access to Amazon Music, we recently purchased a little Bluetooth speaker that performed admirably. The drawback in this situation is that my wife doesn't know how to utilize the app to access Amazon Music. We enjoy the diversity of Sirius XM in our car and frequently wished we could have it at home.According to the specs and reviews, Sonos One appeared to have the potential to become our new favorite music companion.Out of the box, set up was quite simple. The day I buy a new piece of technology and am unable to figure out how to use it is something I dread. This person didn't have a problem with that. Install the app, then follow the easy instructions. The sole exception to this rule is when you wave your iPhone around the room while tuning. I was making too much noise, it kept failing. The app eventually suggested we just move on because my wife truly has the same complaint.Amazon Music and the Sonos app communicated without any issues. When we briefly switched back and forth between the apps, we were able to connect to Sirius XM's streaming service that was now available via apps. The biggest perk is that one of the many radio stations that can be added is our local station for classical music. The sound is amazing. Keep in mind the importance of perspective. We are obviously not audiophiles, but the Sonos is a big improvement over what we had and fills our space with deep, rich sound, according to our old ears. The Alexa thing caught both my wife and me off guard the most because we were dubious and had categorized Alexa in the general category of "things we will never get."We will automatically have Alexa play something from Amazon Music. Your request will be better if it is more detailed. Finding what makes Alexa tick takes a little bit of practice. For instance, after several failures, we glanced at the app and discovered that the name of our neighborhood classical music station was Classical Public Radio. That was successful, and my wife can now play her old acquaintance at 6 am without the use of any apps. Fairness demands that I admit that Alexa does not appear to detect Sirius XM and even informed me that it was not installed. Of course, the app makes it easy to access all of the music.I requested Alexa to give me a joke, set an alarm, and tell me the time. I even confessed my love to her. She said, "That's sweet, thank you." I've read that the Sonos' Alexa feature isn't excellent, but again, it depends on your wants and viewpoint. This home awards the Sonos One with Alexa the Double Senior Discount Seal of Approval.

Denon HEOS 1 HS2 New Hi-Res Audio, Compact, Portable Wireless Bluetooth Speaker with Amazing Sound (Updated Version), Black, works with Alexa Review:

I read countless reviews prior to purchasing the HEOS 1 HS2 and finally decided to pull the trigger. I purchased 2 HEOS 1 speakers (refurb) (refurb). Setup was straightforward out of the box. It took about 5 minutes for the speakers to receive their software updates. After that I was ready to listen. I initially set them both up in the kitchen just to see how the stereo pairing worked. Just one speaker filled the room with quality sound but running them as a stereo pair gives you an even better experience. Yes the EQ is limited but they still sound great. Disclaimer: i'm not an audiophile but I love music and I did renew my tidal subscription just to get HiFi sound out of these speakers.Multi-room Audio: After testing out the stero pair I decided to set them up as originally intended. I have one in the kitchen and one in the loft. Works as designed. I'm able to change the volume levels independently from the app and either play independent songs or simultaneously throughout both rooms.App: As all the other reviewers have stated, the app is not user friendly at all. I personally can navigate around the issues. I gave in to streaming music about a year ago. I was always the type that wanted to "OWN" my music. That being said, I have not had any issues with streaming from pandora, tidal, or amazon music through the HEOS 1's. It works perfectly in that regard. Where I do see issues is trying to stream directly from a device, eg iPhone, Plex Server. I have not had the desire to dedicate time into trying to figure it out. I am pleased with the streaming. Another downfall they have is no AppleMusic partnership.I can look past the cons and still give the Denon HEOS speakers a solid 4/5. I plan on adding a HEOS 7, HEOS HomeCinema, and 2 more HEOS 1's to my multi-room audio system.
