I'm a student of engineering. I've bought three calculators in the last year—the TI-30, the TI-89, both of which are still functional—and this is the third. That excludes a calculator app I bought, which is what I actually use the most. I bought this one because, in contrast to my TI-89, professors frequently restrict the types of calculators that can be used on their tests to those that can be used for the PE and FE exams. The TI-89 and this are not comparable because they fall into different categories. Although the ability to perform integrals and derivatives makes this calculator superior to the TI-30, the ability to perform row reduced echelon form (rref) on small matrices was the main factor in my decision to replace my 30. Have no idea what that is? Rref can solve your unknown variables if you have three equations and three unknowns. This can be helpful for algebra students or for statics students. If you're studying linear algebra, Due to the Ti-36X Pro's matrix size limitations and the likelihood that you will perform additional operations that this calculator is unable to handle, I believe you will use a more potent device. I won't go into all the features that the 36 has that the 30 does not, but I will say that I appreciate that the 36 uses E rather than the 30's x10n for scientific notation input. It looks cleaner and takes up less room on the screen.The calculators' physical design is remarkably similar. The TI-36, in my opinion, has snappier keys, which I prefer because they better let me know when I've depressed a key and are better at preventing accidental key presses on other keys. The color black is also much more appealing to me. Rather than the color that makes the 30 look like a toy, it makes it appear more slick and professional.After all of that, there is one negative aspect of this calculator in my opinion. the metallic keys. The way the coating and texturing reflect light is a little strange. Although they have a cool appearance, these keys are more challenging to read. I lost count of the number of times I unintentionally selected the plus sign rather than the multiplication key. Yes, I was a little more hurried and careless back then, but that is something that should be considered when designing a calculator. Instead of trying to look fancy, it would be better if these keys were simply black with white symbols. Although I don't have this issue with the 30, which places the operation keys in the same locations, it may be resolved with more use of this calculator. Knowing this, even though I wasn't going to use the integral, derivative, or rref functions, I still chose to use the 36 instead of the 30 during my tests.
