Bears are very intelligent animals and have a great sense of smell. They can easily smell food from a long distance away. However, they also have a great sense of hearing and can hear very low frequencies. This means that they can easily hear the sound of an electric fence.
No, motion lights do not scare bears. In fact, bears are attracted to motion lights because they are attracted to the light. Bears are also attracted to the noise that motion lights make.

Okay, I've waited a while to write this review because I want it to be thorough. First off, while I do enjoy gardening for food and reside in northern Pennsylvania, which is deer country, I am not a farmer. In my 125' x 60' garden, I raise the majority of our yearly food supply. Deer, rabbits, and raccoons are obviously a problem. I made the decision to erect an electric fence to assist stop the incursions during this year. I decided on Lock Jaws because they appeared to be simple to install, and they really are! With the proper T-Post, which costs less than wood posts and requires much less work, they are as easy to install as possible.Even with all that ease, the Lock Jaws boys still have a problem to solve. It has to do with where you put the first and last fence posts. I couldn't find a solution to this issue on their website. When it rains, the water accumulates on them and causes them to arc toward the metal T-Post. When the water is gone, though, they stop. The problem is that this arcing is difficult on the charger for your electric fence. Despite my continued efforts, I have not been able to resolve the problem of electrical tape being put to the T-Post and the Polywire. To be clear, this is not a problem other than on the T-Posts at the beginning and end. Oh, you will occasionally find bird excrement on the other Posts that allows arcing to the T-Post, but it usually doesn't last very long. Therefore, Lock Jaws would have the ideal product if they could kindly offer advice on how to get around this. Since I have expertise with other types of electric fences, I can assure you that these are fantastic. Electric fence installation couldn't be simpler! It would be great if they could just tell us how to get rid of the arcing on the beginning and closing postings.Yes, I do suggest them. I'll definitely buy these again.

If you test the wire to see if it will shock you, don't be standing in boots that insulate you from the ground. It will not work then! The ground system should be at least 33' (10 m) away from electric or telephone ground systems to avoid interference.
Set includes 1 Patriot Electric Fence Charger plus 1 250ft spool of Patriot Made in the USA 17 Gauge aluminum wire and Quick Tip Guide. Does NOT include a ground rod. Only effective for small nuisance animals.
Make sure there are a sufficient number of ground rods. See your charger’s user manual for recommendations. If in doubt, use at least three ground rods. Use more ground rods if your soil conditions are not ideal. Ground rods should be at least 6'6" (2 m) long. One long ground rod works better than several short ground rods.
Moist soil conducts electricity much better than dry soil. If possible, locate the ground system in a boggy area. In dry weather, wet the area around the ground system to keep the soil moist.

To get me to yell, it takes a lot. Wow! The three of my dogs that now avoid the fence line were practically scared to death by this creature, including me. Run a 6-foot grounding rod from Home Depot into the ground, making sure that no grass or other vegetation was touching the line before grabbing it. My six-year-old son screamed in fear when he saw it hit me; he won't touch it, neither will I, nor will the dogs. At this point, I can declare that it is safe for pets, but that is the most I would recommend giving them. My entire body became uncontrollably locked up. I ensured that I received the worst of it. I soaked the grounding rod with water before grabbing the wires at the machine's two lead exit points. In all seriousness, have some fun, but don't play with this if you have any cardiac issues! Being as tough as they come, this has my full attention.

I put one hand to a positive strand and one to a negative strand of the pos/neg poultry mesh fence that spans my 164-foot stretch in order to test the charger's strength of shock. For a while, my shoulders felt like they had been given a hefty jolt. A few days later, I was adding an additional post in the mesh to avoid sagging while I had the charger off. My hands were contacting strands at the top of the mesh, and I was wearing shorts with my left leg touching several of the strands. When my 9-year-old daughter wanted to go visit the hens, she didn't see me and assumed she was turning off the charger. She discovered it was already off thanks to my loud scream of pain. My entire body experienced a current, but it wasn't strong enough to cause any harm beyond making me aware that I don't want to go through it again. We specifically want the neighborhood predators to have that experience in order to avoid the monster in the fence!

I choose to use the Red Snapper, MADE IN THE USA, despite the fact that the majority of fence chargers are owned by a single parent corporation. But when I finally erected the fence and was prepared for testing, I was genuinely taken aback. To borrow his fence tester, I called my brother-in-law, a professional cattle farmer. He told me to be thrilled if the fence tested at 3-5 on the tester when I picked it up since he got a five. For the positive line, I did use the heavy grade lead wire that was advised. Well, when the fence tested at 9.8 to 9.9 on the tester, both my brother-in-law and I were quite taken aback. You won't forget that one for a very long time, he warned me, so make sure to never touch it! Enough said.

The item is well-made and performs primarily as anticipated. The lack of connection instructions is the only reason I could think of for docking a star. It might be a little self-explanatory, but since a paper explaining how to adjust the popper is already in the box, why not go the extra mile for the rest? Other than that, the product functions, is audible, and even with my inadequate setup, it is still easily visible at night even though it may not be bright.I would suggest the T-post mount for a quick setup because it connects the ground to the post without the need for additional wire and still allows for simple connection to the fence wire. I have mine attached to the white nylon fence that has a thin metal wire woven into it, and I have it wrapped around the pasture's 3/4-acre perimeter. I can hear the pop, but I can't really see the light in the daytime. Even if the fence is strong enough to hold me and my hair straight up when I touch it there, I'm convinced that if I used steel wire, it would give the light more energy. However, this item is BRIGHT when plugged 12 inches from the 50-mile fence charger, so I might rewire that pasture.

years of struggle with T-post insulators that had to be modified to fit because they were only "standard" in one orientation. They're excellent. They are simple to install from almost any angle, regardless of how the T-post is facing the electric line. They were a touch pricey, but I'd buy them again in a heartbeat. Although I don't care about colour, I see they come in white or black in addition to the orange seen here if you do.
In order to size a fence charger, you need to know the length of the fence, the number of strands, the type of wire being used, the desired voltage, and the number of animals that will be contained by the fence.
The general rule of thumb is that electric fence posts should be placed no more than 10-12 feet apart for cattle. This ensures that the cattle will receive a strong enough shock to deter them from breaching the fence.
Electric fence chargers are built to last for many years with proper maintenance. However, the average lifespan of an electric fence charger is around 10 years.
You need one ground rod for every joule of output your fence charger can produce. Most fence chargers can produce between 0.5 and 1 joule, so you would need at least two ground rods.
It takes about 8,000 volts to keep a deer out.
