Halti Head Collar Review:

I purchased a size 2 for my 37 lb Aussie/Sheltie mix.

He can't be walked on a collar due to tracheal damage (also, collars in general aren't the safest way to walk dogs in general). He hates being walked on harnesses, and will back away when I pull out most of his harnesses.

However, he loves being walked on his Halti. He readily presses his nose into it when it's time to go. He's not a super strong puller, but does walk very nicely and politely on the Halti. I selected it over other options because it allows added security by clipping the halti to the collar. This doesn't add any resistance to the Halti, just safety.

I used three steps to help him acclimate to the Halti:
1. Fasten the neck strap only, letting the nose loop hang. Walk him as normal (on a harness) like this for 2-3 days.
2. Fasten the neck strap and apply the nose loop. Keep the leash attached to the harness. Let him wear the nose loop for a few minutes, then remove it. Work up over the course of 2-3 days to having him wear the nose loop (without a leash attached to it) for the entirety of the walk.
3. Use the Halti with leash attached for a few minutes on and off - switch between using the Halti and the original method of walking. Over the course of 2-3 days, advance to using the Halti for the entire walk.

This method went very well with my dog, although there are other methods that work great too.

The Halti seems very durable, and I'm happy with the added safety of the collar snap. This has been important for me, since my dog has a long, slender nose, which has allowed him to slip out of head collars in the past - definitely something to keep in mind for those with slender-nosed breeds.

He can pant in it just fine, so it does get kind of slobbery when we walk, but quickly dries. I haven't noticed any hair loss on his nose - but he does want a good snout massage after every walk.

If your dog is just a wild walker in general, the Halti isn't magic - your dog still needs leash manners training even with one of these to prevent injuries and freak outs. However, for dogs that hate harnesses and owners who avoid collars, it's an excellent choice.

PetSafe Gentle Leader Headcollar, No-Pull Dog Collar Review:

If I could give this 10 stars I would. We have an 80 pound golden retriever that is 3 years old. We have always had a terrible time walking him due to pulling. He would drag my wife around and make it miserable for me to walk him as well. I watched some YouTube videos about conditioning him with the gentle leader and followed the instructions. Two short training sessions later he had no problems wearing it. Now every time I get it out he comes over to me, sits down and puts his face forward for me to put it on him. He LITERALLY walks next to me with out ANY pulling. It's like he is a different dog. If you have problems with your dog pulling on a traditional leash get this now! You won't be disappointed!!!

PetSafe Gentle Leader Headcollar, No-Pull Dog Collar Review:

I buy everything except groceries off amazon. I have also never left a review. I think this product is lifechanging enough to warrant a review. I have now had this headcollar for exactly a week. I watched several videos on it to get the fitting right. The fitting is important- it will not work as well if not fitted tightly as instructed. I waited two days to use it on walks. Just getting her used to it keeping it on while she ate all meals and giving her tons of treats. Dogs won't like a strap across their face. But you can teach them that the headcollar means they get to go out and they don't mind it. I have a one year old pit bull and I had stopped walking her (she used to get 3 mile walks every day) in favor of driving her to the dog park bc her pulling was so terrible. The last straw was when I took her hiking and couldn't enjoy the scenery bc she was pulling so much for five miles straight. My bfs dog, also a terrible puller, had success with the gentle leader. I took him for a walk to test it out and it was amazing. I immediately ordered one for my dog. Within five mins of using it I could tell it was a godsend. I like to say that walking my dog with the gentle leader on is like walking a cloud. You know the cloud is there bc of the occasional light tension from direction change but otherwise my dog just floats along. It feels like you're walking a show dog or something. If you don't enjoy walking your dog, buy this headcollar. I used to have to wrap the leash around my forearm and then under my armpit and over my shoulder to leverage my weight against her pulling. Now I can walk her with my pinky finger while carrying a coffee in the same hand and texting with the other hand. My brother also has this product but doesn't like it because "it didn't train the dog not to pull when it's not on". This product is not supposed to replace training, it just makes it a lot easier to enjoy time with your dog. Best money I've spent this year. Just buy it. As you can see from the video, there is slight slack in the leash (you won't want too much slack or the dog can step over it and get tangled bc it hangs from under the chin). This is the first time I've ever had slack in a leash while walking my dog. Also, the material stretches when brand new. So readjust a few days later after using for walks for the perfect, permanent fit.

Halti Head Collar Review:

We have a 120lb 4yo purebred German Shepherd male. He is by no means overweight and is much larger than most in his breed. Our problem with walking him is that he loves to chase birds and squirrels. A head collar gives us more control and diverts his attention back to walking when he gets excited and wants to chase something during a walk. I know the Halti is supposed to be a temporary learning tool, but our dog will need a head collar forever because he is so much easier to control this way than trying to keep him from chasing something with just his collar. We have been using a Gentle Leader with him for a long time and it has seemed to work great. My fiancé loves the simplicity of it and control it gives us with our easily excitable dog. I recently became aware of the Halti head collar and wanted to try it out vs. our Gentle Leader. We opted for the large Halti due to his size (by breed Halti recommends a medium).

Gentle Leader Cons: thin straps with no padding that leave a mark (not a sore or cut, just a visible mark) on my dogs snout- doesn't seem to hurt him, but worries me. He can occasionally slip the nose piece off by rubbing his head on the ground (same with Halti). The snout strap comes really close to his eyes when he pulls in the oppsite direction of me (I would say more so than the Halti).

Gentle Leader Pros: more control. Comes in many colors. Our dog cannot move the clip that adjusts the snout piece.

Halti Cons: our dog can move the clip that goes under his chin to adjust the snout piece by opening his mouth really wide. Although I think this is just due to the face that for him to comfortably pant and drink it needs to be all the way down anyways, I still think this is something Halti needs to fix. This clip needs to be stronger. He also rubs his head on the ground and can get the snout piece off (same with a Gentle Leader too though).

Halti Pros: by far outweigh the cons and the features of the Gentle Leader to me. Being 5'1" and not outweighing my dog by much the additional strap around the neck and backup clip that attaches to the collar gives me more control and reassurance. It has a much wider and cushioned strap on the snout that I feel is probably more comfortable for my dog- it does not leave a mark like the Gentle Leader. I also like the sliding pieces the connect the snout strap to the head strap. They also add support and control and help keep the snout strap away from his eyes (the strap still goes close to his eyes if he's being crazy and wants to chase something, but for regular walking works great- Gentle Leader does the same thing).

While I think my fiancé would prefer the gentle leader, being smaller and more simple, he also is bigger and stronger than I am to be able to control our dog. For me, I think the Halti provides more control and requires less effort for me to feel confident and in control if our dog decides to try to chase something while walking. This is the longest product review I've ever written, but with a large breed dog with lots of energy it is hard to find good products and good reviews to help me make decisions on the best products for my dog. So I hope this helps someone else!
