Best Small Animal Bedding & Litter in 2020

Kaytee Clean & Cozy Colored Small Animal Bedding Review:

This stuff is awesome. I wish I had started buying it for my guinea pig a lot sooner. I've had piggies for as long as I can remember, and have always used pine shavings. I just recently switched to this Clean and Cozy bedding and it's wonderful stuff. The pig I have right now isn't a fan of polar fleece in her cadge (she seems to feel like she doesn't know where to potty) and seems much happier with shavings, like pine. So I switched her to this which is much softer on her paws compared to pine, and she immediately took to it. And the birthday cake color is so pretty. It's fun and bright and looks great in her cadge. I just wish I had started using this years ago. Awesome guinea pig bedding!

Ware Manufacturing Plastic Scatterless Lock-N-Litter Small Pet Pan- Colors May Vary Review:

I have two dwarf rabbits that have a bad habbit of digging in their litter box and making a mess every. single. day. Bought this to help prevent that and keep their cage just a bit cleaner! Works great so far! It took them a day to get used to the grate, but they're using it consistently and I only have to pick up stray poops now rather than their whole dumped dish. Unfortunately the locks don't work for me. My rabbits are smart and have long ago figured out how to remove those, so I use little twist ties to keep it in place! Works great.

Word of advice: with ANY litter pan, you should be sure to change it every 1-2 days depending on how much your rabbit has filled it. Rabbit pee is very acidic and will muck up the bottom of the pan eventually no matter what you do. I've seen some complaints in the reviews about this - it WILL happen. So be sure to clean it frequently, and if it does happen, it's not the end of the world. They can seill use it... This'll be the third pan my rabbits have gone though as I buy them a new one for $6 every year due to their chewing on it and mucking it up.

Small Pet Select Natural Paper Bedding Review:

We used the pet store bedding for years for our pet rats and thought it was fine. Cant remember the brand, but a chunkier paper bedding that came in all sorts of colors, but much harder than this. I saw this on Amazon and decided to give it a try and we have been VERY pleased with it. I love how soft it is, it seems like it would be much more comfortable on Miss Sandy Noodles little feeties, and she love love loves to move it around, its light and fluffy and easy for her to shape and nest with. And the very best part? The smell. SO much better than the other bedding. Im not talking about out of the package, but when soiled in the cage it is SIGNIFICANTLY less smelly. Before Miss Sandys cage mate sadly left us it would seem like just one day would pass before you could smell the cage, and its a very large cage. Now with this bedding we are extra conscious about changing it because it could seriously be two weeks before it starts to smell even lightly.
This is really fantastic bedding. Highly recommended by me and the Noodle! (she doesn't actually really care about bedding that much, but she sure does love cheerios)

Kaytee Clean & Cozy Extreme Odor Control Review:

I absolutely love this bedding! I have my pairs of guinea pigs in 2 Midwest cage setups and each enclosure has one cage with fleece bedding, and one with this paper bedding, and all of them love to play & snuggle in the fresh bedding! My 8 week old skinny pig, Mikey, seems to enjoy it the most! I was considering going with just fleece, but my piggies love this stuff too much. It's a staple in our care now. It definitely helps keep the odor to a minimum, as long as you spot clean.

Carefresh Small Pet Bedding Review:

We've been using Carefresh bedding for our guinea pigs for years. It's the only brand that we ever consider using. That said, I really wish the quality was more consistent. I realize that the source of reclaimed paper fiber varies a lot, but the Natural paper bedding can vary from harder brown bedding to fluffier gray bedding depending on the batch (see photo). At stores, I usually try to pick out the softer fluffier gray Natural bedding bags. When you order online, you get what you get.

Update February 2019: Carefresh has changed the packaging (see second photo) and it now says on the back that Carefresh is “made from scratch with pillowy soft, ultra absorbent comfyfluff” instead of reciting that it uses reclaimed paper fiber (on the old packaging). I’ve bought the new type packaging Carefresh from a couple of different sources (since it became available several months ago) and it still sometimes varies quite a bit from batch to batch (see totally different colors and textures of two different batches in second photo). Based on recent experiences, the product does not appear to be more consistent in quality since the new package labeling change. I’m not upgrading my rating to five stars since although I still like the product enough to keep using it, there appears to still be product consistency problems.

Kaytee Clean & Cozy White Small Animal Bedding Review:

This is a great, more affordable alternative to carefresh bedding. Here is my full breakdown of the product:

What I love:
- The white color makes it easy to spot-clean more soiled areas, making individual bags last longer because a full dump-out cage clean is not always necessary.
- This product is the only bedding I've tried for my mice that seems truly dust-free. This is very important, as small pets have delicate respiratory systems and absolutely must be provided with dust-free bedding if you wish to provide them with a long, healthy life.
- This bedding is soft and comfortable and provides my pets with excellent nesting and tunnel-making material, which enriches the lives of hamsters and mice, who naturally tunnel and build nests.
- This bedding expands a lot! I have five mice in three different cages, and can easily provide them with 2-3 complete dump-and-fill changes per bag, which is as good a return as one can expect for a set up like mine.
- I feel this product is reasonable priced, especially on sale.

What I'm not crazy about:
- Odor absorption is low, though I am not as concerned about this as some people, since I find a light mouse-smell pleasant. People who house male rodents, who give off a stronger scent, may not find this aspect adequate.

All in all, I love this product. It keeps my girls healthy, happy and tunneling. They like to rearrange it into big nests. I can sleep easy knowing my cherished pets have a safe, clean environment to live in.
