This hatchet is very good! When swinging, it feels terrific and performs a great job. The weight and design of the head and blade combine to quickly complete whatever task you are completing. Perfect as a necessary item for those little campfires and fire pits. The metal will be harmed if you strike the blade against anything hard, such a rock. This hatchet's edge will not last for very long due to the poorer grade of steel that was utilized to make it, and it is readily dinged and dented with severe impacts (full swings) to those harder surfaces. I also bought a Fiskars knife/axe sharpening, and it performed even better than I had anticipated! It made the less severely damaged portions of the blade Razor Sharp and cleaned up the more severely harmed ones. I heartily suggest this Fiskars hatchet and the sharpener since the value and quality are unbeatable at this price!

If by lightweight they meant in terms of quality, they truly did themselves a disservice. I love this sheath. Very substantial, well-padded, and it seems to be well-made. Ballistic nylon that is nice and thick and appears to be doubled or at least cushioned in some way. In contrast to other reviewers, mine was not folded, indicating that they have taken complaints into account. Mine arrived in excellent shape. Five rivets have been strategically placed. At the top of the opening, thick nylon webbing is sewn and welded. The edges of everything are cleanly and firmly finished with nylon piping. The belt loop is substantial and ought to be adequate. As you can see in the image, the thickness demonstrates how this has either been doubled or padded. Man, I couldn't be happier.

I recently bought this machete, and so far, I enjoy it. I adore my other SOG knives that I own (PUP). In my opinion, really high-quality knives. I don't think this machete compares to my previous SOGs, but it wasn't as expensive either. I believe it to be an excellent purchase at the asking price. It is already sharp out of the box, but after a few swipes with a diamond-fine stone, I managed to make it much sharper. Yes, I have seen several of the video reviews where the edge has been damaged with chunks and bends. However, everyone was using it to hack down freaking trees. a lot more than what a machete is intended for. They are made to get rid of weeds and brush (small under 1" diameter branches maybe). If you want to cut down trees, why not purchase a hatchet and use it for that reason rather than comparing the purpose of a machete to that of a hatchet? This should work just great for me, I believe. Although it's been mentioned in other reviews, the handle form is good, however it's a little thin for my hands. However, I wrapped it with paracord, which gave it more thickness, made it fit perfectly in my hand, improved the grip, and added a wrist lanyard. Is this machete the best? Most likely not. There are definitely far better ones available for much higher prices, but for around $20, I believe this to be the finest option available. After some use, I'll add to this evaluation. However, I don't believe you can go wrong with a cheap utility blade.

Outstanding garden axe and machete! A Fiskars Brush Axe is one of the best tools for cutting, chopping, and clearing trails. I've been using one for years. The iconic hawkbill/billhook design of the Brush Axe is retained in this new Machete Axe, but it has a longer, heavier length and a larger cutting surface. I've already used the chisel tip to cut off new growth and hack roots while pruning trees. The hooked design bites, holds, and severs with surgical accuracy, making it the ideal shape for small branches and vines. Although I haven't used it as an axe yet, the weight at the blade's tip should make it simple to use without having to carry a separate hatchet. It is suitable for usage with one or two hands and is fairly weighty. Although the supplied sheath is fantastic, it lacks a belt loop or clip, thus in order to remove the tool, you must first unsnap the hilt and then peel the velcro along the length of the sheath. Definitely preferred for gardening than a regular machete. Although it's a bit heavy for hiking, I'll soon give it a go. It's difficult to surpass the Brush Axe, and I'm not claiming it succeeded, but it's up there and a fantastic instrument when used properly.You WILL need to understand how sharpening works if you own any axes, machetes, or knives (yes, kitchen knives too), in response to those who docked stars because they aren't sharp enough. There are several methods, including belt sanders, stones, leather strops, cotton wheels, and v-blade knife sharpeners. With the exception of boxcutters and razors, the majority of commercially made blades are not as sharp as they may be. Most likely to avoid being harmed during packaging and shipping or from cutting the untrained owner. It might be said that every machete I've ever purchased has been "dull," which is NORMAL. Not everyone desires a straight razor that is two feet long. Some will use it more for cutting hard wood, while others would use it for cutting thick grass. If you find that this needs to be sharpened, do so. It's not difficult, and even if it arrived sharp, you'd still need to resharpen it after some usage.

Martindale is what I've always used, and these are a little different. softer steel, longer, thinner blade, and cheaper. Martindales become a cheap, practical machete as a result, which can be easily sharpened but also potentially dulled. I chose to try an Ontario after taking a third Martindale and reading reviews.This knife weighs about the same but is about 4 inches shorter. Consequently, you receive roughly the same leverage and cutting force in a smaller area. The blade is much thicker metal, which should make it more resistant to cracking, but if you plan to sharpen it with a bastard and smooth file right out of the box, be prepared to put in some work. When you achieve an edge, it will hold securely. I only barely chipped the blade when I nicked a T-post.The only part of this that requires some getting accustomed to is the handle. I've always held Martin Dale handles in the but of my hand because you need to grasp the knife in your knuckles to strike forcefully. Not sure if I like that yet; it's a little different.for cedar breakers, fence lines, dense undergrowth in confined areas, etc. This knife should perform well and last a long time while cutting tough materials, such as small trees. I believe the leverage and length of the longer Martindale could be a little more helpful if you were in a field of thin bush.maybe buy one of each. But the Ontario is unquestionably made of steel that is thicker, heavier, and more durable.Update: I'm glad to raise my rating from a four to a five after owning for an entire season. Given that I still have mixed feelings about the handle's design, I might attempt sanding it or making a wooden one instead. However, the metal and the blade are five-star material. Before each usage, I would sharpen a Martindale or tramontina. This blade holds its edge for a very long period after being sharpened, which requires some work with a hand file (which, in my opinion, always makes the best edge). I don't use my nose, therefore I don't worry about the form of it being difficult to hone without a vice or grinder.

Wow! This machete really impresses for a price of less than $20. The few negative reviews almost convinced me not to buy because I'd rather not be taken advantage of. However, the overwhelming number of favorable reviews confirmed my impression that this blade seemed to be of excellent quality at a fantastic price.Let me promise you that this blade will not let you down. I purchased the FULL SIZE 18" saw-back "Gator" machete, not the "Junior" model as some reviews have suggested. If I were giving it to boy scouts, I wouldn't use a machete that little for my own personal use. Whoever these crazy individuals were who had negative things to say about this blade; It is evident that they were either highly intoxicated while using it or had never before in their entire life used a machete so they attempted to use it differently? I don't know, and I don't really care. This blade, in my opinion, is superb and makes a great machete!With the help of the fine-edged blade, it cut through new pine branches with ease, and I hadn't even sharpened it yet. So, the sharpness was solely "out-of-box" sharpness, which is never quite as keen as the complete metal-hardened sharpness that might be obtained when buying cheap blades. In other words, it arrives sharp enough to perform a good job and can be readily sharpened further. I haven't honed it to the level of a beard-shaving razor blade, but the metallurgy retains an enhanced edge incredibly well. The saw-back is not a gimmick either; it is a genuine rip saw blade with rough-cut teeth. I used a typical portable wood saw and had no trouble cutting through a pine with a 6" diameter.The steadiness of the blade is absolutely ideal for a dual-edge machete. When chopping with the fine edge blade, the blade thickness prevents too much flex and holds up well against resistance. In the meantime, it offers the flex required to correctly employ the saw-back to prevent the blade from getting stuck in deep cuts. Quite impressive! The handle has a really attractive form and is cozy to hold. Although a full-tang blade is usually desired, the handle's half-tang connection to the blade is more than adequate for the machete's intended use. It is a machete, not an axe. If you are unsure of how to use a machete, search for a YouTube video. Additionally, find a video on using a hand rip saw if you've never done so.This blade offers excellent quality at an incredible price if you know what you're doing. Buy it right away—I almost can't believe it! I assure you that you won't be let down. Well, the sheath is disappointing. But who has ever offered a good sheath for a blade under $100, anyway? The saw-back is low-profile enough to be used with a regular sheath, and the ergonomics of the blade are virtually equal to those of a traditional machete if you really need to sheath your machete.
