It's time to seed your lawn when the grass starts to turn brown. The first step is to rake up all the dead grass and leaves. Then, you need to loosen up the soil so the new seed can take root. You can do this with a garden hoe or a power tiller. Once the soil is loose, you can add some new topsoil, if needed. Finally, you can spread the seed over the area. Be sure to read the seed package to see how much seed you need for your lawn.
It takes grass seed anywhere from 7 to 30 days to grow fully. The type of grass, climate, and soil all play a role in how quickly the grass will grow. In general, grasses that are grown in warmer climates and on well-drained soils will germinate and grow the fastest.
No, April is not too early to plant grass seed. Grass seed can be planted as early as the ground can be worked in the spring. The earlier you plant, the longer the grass will have to grow before the hot summer weather arrives.

This grass was adored by my kitties! I have been having trouble with my cats destroying my indoor plants. They were toppling the green leaves in addition to consuming them. I tried growing them their own greens as a diversion because I was tired of the new behavior. It performed flawlessly! They now leave my plants alone and enjoy their grass.I put the container near some electronics for extra warmth to aid the seeds' germination during the first developing period (with the lid on). After two days, I saw that the lid had fallen off and grass was poking through. As soon as the container was entirely filled with grass, I relocated it to a sunny window sill where the cats couldn't get to it. I didn't put it down for the kitties till after that. They got right to munching on it. Now that I regularly cultivate grass in a larger container, they still enjoy the treat. For my cats, this was a terrific introduction to growing fresh greens. You can see the Sweet Greens to the right and the new, larger container of grass with the cat curled up inside it in the center of the attached photo. Now my cats may enjoy their own plants!

This grass is suddenly sprouting and it is lovely. For years, I have been battling to get my yard back. The previous grass seed I used was labelled as rye grass, but it grew clumpily, went through a rapid growth phase, and was a lighter shade of green than the rest of my grass, giving the area a splotchy appearance. I took it out again and used this stuff to reseed it, and I'm really pleased with the results.

I'm from Tucson, Arizona, which is one of the hardest places to grow grass. Tucson's University of Arizona recommended perennial ryegrass for fall-through-spring lawns (summers too hot and the grass goes dormant).WATER: The first thing you need to know about this grass is that it adores the liquid. The seed actually did need to be watered every day for it to sprout. And if you can offer this, it will germinate like crazy. Even as it gets older, grass still needs a lot of water, just less regularly. I set up an automated sprinkler system that runs for 45 minutes every two days during the sweltering summer, or every three to four days depending on the temperature. This grass adores and requires a lot of fertilizer. My 200 square foot grass receives 5 pounds of 12-12-12 fertilizer every three months. Until I unintentionally spilled a handful-sized amount of fertilizer in one area of the grass, I had no idea how important fertilizer was. Normally, this much fertilizer would kill any plant, but in that area, the grass began to grow thick and lush nearly three times as quickly as the area around it (4 inches per week instead of 1.5 inches per week). This confirmed to me that a lot of fertilizer is necessary for this grass to grow well. Holding back on fertilizer, meanwhile, slows growth and makes your lawn easier to maintain if you're bored of mowing it and it's already sufficiently lush. Do not be stingy with the fertilizer, especially in the southwest where the alkaline soil does not retain fertilizer well.CLIPPINGS: The grass has all it needs to digest itself, as will all lawns if you fertilize and water it frequently (and aerate it if necessary). This implies that clippings will mysteriously vanish in a week and entirely deteriorate in a month to three months.SUMMER: This grass's growth is noticeably slowed down in the summer (100-110 degrees F here). If the temperature exceeds 105 degrees F, the grass will die totally. Although it still needs the same quantity of water, I estimate that its growth is 3 times slower at 100 degrees Fahrenheit than it is at 70. If you live somewhere where temperatures frequently approach 105°F, prepare for this grass to die entirely and sow it with a grass adapted to hot climates, such as Bermuda, Zoysia, etc.WINTER: Although this grass enjoys chilly temperatures, it stops growing at or near freezing.

The grass seeds arrived to me on October 27. I planted them on part of my backyard on October 28 as a test run, but I had low expectations. Six days later, on November 3, there were already teeny shots. Everyone often tells that grass seeds take a very long time to grow, so I was very surprised. On November 12, 15 days later, additional grass had begun to grow slowly. On November 20, 23 days later, yesterday, my yard had neatly filled out. Even though it has only been 23 days, there are still some bare places that need to be filled in. Fortunately, the grass is still young. I was so excited that I bought more seeds to plant in a different area of my yard. I did this on November 15 and yesterday, November 20, I noticed some shoots poking through. I used garden soil, which I didn't have much of, and Scotts turf builder starter food for new grass weed preventer to prepare the soil, and even the area without garden soil produced grass. Before planting, I added epsom salt to the soil. I then covered the seeds with peat moss in some locations and potting mix in others. I'm very glad it prevented me from having to purchase grass Suds as I did for the front yard. Make sure to frequently water the seeds.

This has been such a fantastic first-time purchase and growing wheatgrass experience! I chose to purchase the one pound bag after doing a lot of research and grow approximately half of it in a tub for my five hamsters to eat. Well, they are so obsessed with this material that I cut off little pieces and put them in their cages. In order to prevent them from eating soil or getting wounded by something in the soil, I was able to get grass to grow in their bedding. To ensure that it will work, I did soak them for approximately a day in advance. Then, I obtained a plastic storage container and covered the bottom of it with a layer of their bedding (Kaytee Clean and Cozy), which I had already soaked in water. I poured water on top to make it extra wet, then I sowed the seeds according per the instructions. As you can see from the photos, they are flourishing, and my hamsters are having a field day with it. I can confidently state that none of it is wasted because they like eating the grass and digging out the roots. In addition to the big container where they walk on and hang out, I also have a tiny bowl that I use to grow smaller amounts for their cages. Until I need more, the remaining half of the seeds are hanging around in the bag. The next time, I'll probably just plant a tiny bowl of them so I can grow what I need.I am completely delighted with the seeds as a whole and would definitely make another purchase from this seller. The customer assistance was excellent, and the web instructions were quite detailed. I wish there were a million stars I could give. I appreciate Todd's Seeds.

I've been reading the contradictory reviews on Amazon. Sincerely, I discovered that this satisfied my demands to a T.Most of my grass was dead, and any attempts to water it simply caused weeds to grow. With the Sun Joe AJ801E 12 Amp 13" Electric Scarifier Plus Lawn Dethatcher with Collection Bag, I first got rid of the weeds and scarified the soil. When the daytime and nighttime temperatures were within the advised range, I planted in the fall.I spread the seeds out and then lightly covered them with top dirt. Light irrigation was used to keep the area moist (twice daily). The idea was to keep the seeds the most, not wet the ground, because they were already germination. The first indications of grass began to emerge after 10 days. The bare place in my yard was beginning to be filled in by the grass a month later. It was 40 days before I finally mowed it, and it is presently doing great. It's interesting to me that this grass blend seems to grow more quickly than the rest of my lawn. When it's time to mow my grass, the new patch is already easily 25% taller than the rest of it.

This is a pretty excellent looking thick blade grass. I had a pair of contractors around today to do some work and the both stopped and appreciated the lawn. I planted a new grass in the front yard using this seed and will never go back to rye. Seems to be better adapted for the Pacific NW than rye. I have a property in SoCal with Saint Augustine grass; not as coarse as Saint Augustine. Better to walk on. I understand that it is drought tolerant, I will test that next summer when it is established. It seems to germinate a bit slower than rye; don't worry - it will come up. I suggest planting a bit heavier than the instructions say for it to fill in quicker.

I was worried this product wouldn't work after reading some unfavorable reviews on Amazon, but it has. I started this in April and reside close to Dallas, Texas. I carefully followed the instructions after searching for "how to restart a lawn." Although it took me a lot of hours, and I'm still working on our front lawn section by section, I can already see progress. Knowing that I would be working alone, I started with a small area of the lawn in order to test out potential new seed and fertilizer brands before moving on to larger areas. I thoroughly irrigated the entire lawn once per day for a few days before to starting anything. I then decided to start working on a certain area of the lawn. I removed all of the thatch, leaves, sticks, and other debris from that area. The previous owners installed sod but never watered it afterward. Consequently, there were numerous layers of dense dead grass and other things. Then I removed all of the weeds from that area. Then I went back to the area with the rake and gently raked it to dislodge the top soil. I then spread the seed in both north and south and east and west directions using the Scotts Wizz Hand-Held Spreader. Following that, I applied Scotts Turf Builder Lawn Food - Starter Food for New Grass Plus Weed Preventer in both directions and in the same manner. For about ten days, I watered that section of the lawn for 20 to 30 minutes each morning and evening (assuming it didn't rain). I applied the same technique to another area of the lawn the following week. Since I seeded that initial portion, it has been about 15 days, and I can already see some grass! There have also been a relatively small number of weeds that have appeared. I'm treating the lawn piece by piece and intend to keep using both this seed and the aforementioned fertilizer goods. People, in my opinion, don't prepare their yards BEFORE just sowing seeds, thus it stands to reason that they won't see any results. If seeds are planted on top of thatch or layers of dead grass, they won't grow in the soil. I've put a lot of effort into this, but seeing results encourages me to keep going.

I must say, this performs VERY nicely. When I originally read other reviews that praised the amount of mulch in comparison to seed, I was a little dubious. But as you can see, the outcomes were fantastic; in fact, we had to place two more orders to address the issues we were unable to resolve.Notes:Yes, there is a sizable amount of mulch. But compared to if you had just bought seed outright, it actually does assist you get much better outcomes. We've had poor success using straight seed in the past in terms of germination and survival rates. There is certainly a lot of mulch. But if the bulk of the seed endures...It is roughly 400 square feet in size. Don't cut costs. It's not intended to replace the entire yard; rather, it's meant as a mending product. Get enough of the product to completely cover any large areas you plan to seed with it.As it would with any product, heavy rain WILL wash it away. Try planting when you'll have a week without rain so you can water by hand, even though it might not be convenient. Avoid overwatering it or leaving the sprinkler on. It'll be washed away. It WILL dry out more quickly on days with intense sunshine.Ours took four days to begin sprouting and six days to become visible. Every time the mulch's look changed, that was taken care of by watering. When applied evenly over regions that appear to be thinning, even seems to work incredibly well.NO weed seeds have appeared to be growing.
It is often recommended that grass seed be raked in after it is applied to the lawn. This helps to ensure that the seed comes in contact with the soil, which is necessary for germination. Additionally, raking in the seed can help to prevent it from being eaten by birds or blown away by the wind.
It's generally a good idea to put topsoil over grass seed. This will help the seedlings to grow more quickly and evenly. Be sure to use a light topsoil, though, as too much weight can compact the soil and make it difficult for the roots to penetrate.
When starting a new lawn, it is important to know what order to do things in. Many people believe that they should put down fertilizer first and then seed, but this is actually not the best way to do things. The best way to establish a new lawn is to seed first and then fertilize.
If you use too much grass seed, your lawn will be too thick and the grass will be competing for resources. This will result in a thinner, weaker lawn that is more susceptible to disease and pests.
If you don't rake in grass seed, the seed will likely just blow away or be eaten by birds. If it does happen to land in a spot where it can germinate, you'll probably end up with a patchy lawn.
There is no definitive answer to this question as the best grass seed for poor soil will vary depending on the specific conditions of the soil in question. However, some general tips that may be helpful include choosing a grass seed that is tolerant to poor soil conditions, such as those that are drought-tolerant or have a high tolerance to compacted soils. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the soil is properly prepared before planting the grass seed, as this will improve the chances of the seed germinating and thriving.
