My 3.0 L Mercruiser was recently winterized with this, and it was successful. The two water input ports on the sides of the motor are covered by this device. The U bar's spring motion keeps it in place. When you turn on the water, the suction cups spray water onto the engine, with any extra water dripping from the suction cups themselves. The leak is brought on by the U bar's tiny opening due to the water pressure. This is expected and inevitable. Water and exhaust exit higher up on the back of the engine when it is started. A lukewarm feeling when leaving the water indicates that the engine is not overheating and is not receiving enough cooling. Overall, it functions well.

I've probably used every type of water/ear muff possible because I work as a boat mechanic. I like these since they firmly grip the water intakes; I'm not concerned that, like the metal ones, they'll come off while flushing the engine. The female hose connection component and the muff are both one solid piece. High water pressure won't cause it to come loose. Although stainless steel can and frequently does rust, the plastic u-shaped piece appears to be sufficiently durable and has the added advantage of not leaving a rust stain when stored.

For my Mercruiser sterndrive, this combination works brilliantly. It is a touch stiff, but it fits perfectly. I believe it is because of its "newness." Although it takes some time to set up, once it is, it functions perfectly.My only suggestion is to connect the hose first because doing so once the engine is running can be a pain.

The rubber cups on this one appear to run horizontally, which worried me because the perforations in the lower unit on my boat run vertically; however, I bought it nonetheless, figuring that I would be able to twist the cups so that they are orientated vertically, and I was able to do so.
