Best Laptop Cooling Pads & External Fans in 2022

Last update: January 3, 2023

Are bigger laptops better at cooling?

Laptops come in all shapes and sizes, but do bigger laptops have an advantage when it comes to cooling? The answer is yes and no. Bigger laptops definitely have more space for cooling fans and heat sinks, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're better at cooling. The key to cooling is airflow. If you have good airflow, then heat will dissipate quickly and your laptop will stay cool. If you have bad airflow, then heat will build up and your laptop will get hot. So, it really depends on the design of the laptop.

Are cheap cooling pads worth it?

If you are looking for a cheap cooling pad, they are definitely out there. However, you may want to rethink your decision before purchasing one. Cheap cooling pads may not provide the best quality, and they may not last as long as more expensive options. In the end, it may be worth it to spend a little extra money on a cooling pad that will last longer and provide better quality cooling.

Can a cooler damage a laptop?

A laptop can overheat if it's placed on top of a heat-generating object like a cooling pad or a gaming laptop. The extra heat can damage the computer's internal components. If you're using a cooling pad, make sure it's not blocked by anything and that the air can flow freely around it.

Do external cooling fans work for laptops?

External cooling fans for laptops are available for purchase online and in stores. They are designed to fit most laptop models and can be used to cool down your device. Some users report that their laptop feels cooler and runs more smoothly after using an external cooling fan.

Pccooler Laptop Cooling Pad, Laptop Cooler with 5 Quiet Red LED Fans for 12-17.3 Inch Laptop, Dual USB 2.0 Ports, Portable 6 Angle Adjustable Laptop Stand for Gaming Laptop (PC-R5) Review:

The cooling pad arrived promptly and in good shape. It has been keeping my laptop from overheating for almost two weeks now that I've been using it. Since the vents on my laptop are on the bottom, I enjoy that there are apertures beneath the fan for air flow. Unlike some of the others I've seen, which have just one and only function on a firm flat surface, it also has several angle adjustments. The bracket is one aspect of this cooling pad that I would change. The bracket is constructed of a durable material, but because of how it is attached, there is no resistance to it moving, so if you are not careful, it could create clanging noises when you modify the angle of the laptop. The plastic gives somewhat under the weight of my laptop when I carry my laptop around with the cooling pad angled. The cooling pad appears to be quite durable, so it may be be in my head, but it may be something to keep in mind if you have a larger laptop (or simply don't carry it around the house with the laptop set at an angle, hehe). My laptop weighs about 2.0 kg (4.4 lb), for comparison. The cooling pad's design is effective and lightweight, and aside from that, I heartily suggest it.

TECKNET Laptop Cooling Pad, Portable Slim Quiet USB Powered Laptop Notebook Cooler Cooling Pad Stand Chill Mat with 3 Blue LED Fans, Fits 12-17 Inches Review:

The purpose of purchasing a laptop cooler should be very obvious. We use this specific one for the gaming laptops to help keep them cool. I enjoy having control over the fan speeds and an LCD to show temperatures and mode selections. While you must give up a USB port in order to plug it in, it compensates for the loss on the side of the cooler itself. The drawback is that it is a 2.0 instead of the 3.0/3.1 you may be utilizing. For most people, it's not a big deal, but if it does, there you are.The fans are attractive, provide excellent cooling, and operate quietly, but when they are at their loudest, you can hear them. Personally, I have not needed to run the fans at maximum speed because the combination of the raised elevation and the large fans effectively cools the vehicle. This cooler is not one you should put on your lap; it is designed for desktops or table tops and will be unwieldy and heavy there. Being able to alter it is a benefit to me because, for the affordable price of this cooler, many coolers don't actually offer that.If you want your gaming system to perform at its peak, you need to keep it cold, which is where investing in a good cooler comes in.

Havit HV-F2056 15.6"-17" Laptop Cooler Cooling Pad - Slim Portable USB Powered (3 Fans) (Black+Blue) Review:

My dependable old Targus mat has gotten more noisier over the years. Since my laptop would be covering all that pricey eye candy, I immediately discounted the more expensive pads with changeable speeds, bright LEDs, contemporary patterns, and other extras when looking for new pads. My criteria were really straightforward: thin

TECKNET Laptop Cooling Pad, Portable Ultra-Slim Quiet Laptop Notebook Cooler Cooling Pad Stand with 2 USB Powered Fans, Fits 12-16 Inches Review:

You can see in the images I supplied how my 13-inch laptop would seem on this cooling pad if I were to use it. Since my laptop is one of the newer, slimmer models, it doesn't have as good of fans to keep itself cool. I purchased this pad because of its design and because it is reputed to be excellent at keeping your laptop cool. Therefore, this pad's design is pretty elegant, quite simple, and also quite clever. I'm now using this cooling pad on my lap because the design permits it and the side openings allow for a lot of airflow. My laptop struggles to cool itself down, as I've previously mentioned, which is why I purchased this pad. Your laptop will get a lot cooler using this cooling pad. I utilize a lot of, for lack of a better term, computer-intensive software because I'm a student, more specifically an engineering student (e.g. SolidWorks). This cooling pad is able to keep my laptop at a cool, comfortable temperature of between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius even though I frequently use a second monitor and have multiple tabs open in Google Chrome.I'd give this cooling pad a 10/10 recommendation.

Havit RGB Laptop Cooling Pad Cooler for 15.6-17 Inch Laptop with 3 Quiet Fans and Touch Control, Pure Metal Panel Portable Cooling Stand Review:

My Dell E5540 i7's vent heat dropped by about 25 degrees F on average (it's been running hot lately; I should probably take it apart and clean it).Prior to sliding this unit under it, the contactless thermometer indicated peak vent heat at 122.8F, and at 96.6F 60 seconds later. It doesn't appear to be flimsy or unstable and appears to be rather solidly constructed. I've just used it for a short while, so one of the fans might have a slight balance issue. If that changes, I'll update my review. (Five minutes later, the peak vent temperature is 86.0F. Realistically, this might be worth 30*F delta. It's lot quieter than my refrigerator, which is two rooms away; with the fans running at full power, I can only hear the fan hum. Compared to the HEPA filter I have in my bedroom, it is possibly an entire order of magnitude quieter (not in turbo, just in Allergen Scrubbing). Even though I'm sensitive to noise, if this were running on the bed next to me as I slept, neither the puppies nor I would be disturbed.I'm actually fairly substantially impressed, provided it keeps up. I probably don't need the illumination, but it keeps the machine cool, keeps my lap from getting too hot, and allows me to write code for longer, so that's good enough for me.

Tree New Bee Cooling Pad for 15.6 - 17-Inch Laptops with Four 120mm Fans at 1200 RPM, Black (TNB-K0025) Review:

I have an Alienware 17 R5 with an i9-8950HK, 32GB of RAM, and a 1080 OC processor. The fastest-running model in the lineup for this chassis is created by this combination. The native fans are tiny (one for the GPU and one for the CPU) (see pic). Computer fans operate more quickly and with a higher pitch the smaller they are. I totally mod Fallout 4 and Skyrim. The laptop was on top of the desk when I first started playing them, with a couple 1" wood blocks tipped up the back for ventilation. The system operated so loudly in this configuration that I needed earplugs to stay immersed.I needed a cooling pad that was big when I went cooling pad shopping (due to this oversized 17.3" laptop). Along with the computer's intake fans, it also required huge fans (to move a lot of air quietly). These fans were to be located at the top left and top right. I wasn't into technological gadgets (sensors and LCD displays). The only pad that satisfied those requirements and received positive reviews was this one.I was also expecting for a pad where I could turn off the lights because, as AW owners know, this laptop illuminates in any color I like. However, almost every pad on the market lacks this feature. Because the laptop entirely covers the top of the pad and the LEDs are feeble even at maximum power, just the underside of the pad illuminates when installed. Fortunately, the underneath glow is not strong. Yay! If I really wanted to, I could replace out the fans on the pad, but nah!The laptop was sitting too high on the front flip-out pegs when I first placed the system on the pad. Particularly, the laptop's intakes were higher than the back fans on the pad. By placing a few low profile bolts just at the pad's front edge, I was able to remedy that issue (see pic). Extruding feet on the laptop are actually horizontal slots. The laptop's front underside slips smoothly over the bolt heads as long as their height isn't too great, and they catch on the feet (see pic). This made it possible for the fans to align properly and raised the aesthetic appeal of a display that I wasn't even aware I was doing (I play with the lid down). The integrity of the pad's flip-down rear feet first worried me. Online, they appeared fragile. They are solid, therefore my worries weren't justified. Here comes the crucial phase. I've engaged in intense firefights and played Fallout 4 on the highest settings. Now, the laptop's operation is hardly audible! I'm in awe of what a difference this cheap addition has made. Well done, Tree New Bee!The one problem I do have right now is not a cooling pad problem. It appears that this laptop's USB ports, including port C, are all active. I must manually switch off the pad since it continues to operate even when the laptop is off. It's two dials nestled at the back of the pad underneath the laptop, which is kind of a pain. I recently acquired a USB-C dock to address the ugly wire that is becoming worse. It should have at least one port that is not in use. In the event that not, I'll search for a 5" USB extender with an On/Off switch. These days, you never know what "they" produce. Making the transition from a desktop to a laptop has definitely been an interesting animal, I can say that with certainty now.Cheers!

AICHESON Laptop Cooling Pad 5 Fans Up to 17.3 Inch Heavy Notebook Cooler, Blue LED Lights, 2 USB Ports, S035, Blue-5fans Review:

My laptop is really old, and the fan inside of it cannot keep it functioning properly. I was given this product by a friend, and I am really happy with it. I now use it practically daily. Additionally, it can help my laptop cool down rapidly, and it currently works nicely with my laptop. and suggest it to you folks if you're having the same issue I am.It contains five fans, one large in the center and four smaller ones on the sides. There is a sizable mesh surface to support laptops up to 17.3", and there are four height settings so you may adjust your viewing while using the computer. Additionally, there is a switch that allows me to regulate the speed of the fans and lights to suit my demands. I occasionally set a movie or game to the highest setting while watching or playing it. What a fantastic cooler for a laptop!

HAVIT 5 Fans Laptop Cooling Pad for 14-17 Inch Laptop, Cooler Pad with LED Light, Dual USB 2.0 Ports, Adjustable Mount Stand (Black) Review:

My 17-inch Alienware M17x, which is roughly 5 years old, gets so hot that you can't hold it on your lap for more than a few minutes, and it frequently shuts down from overheating. I've bought at least five cooling pads, including Thermaltake models and other products with good reviews. None of them actually managed to keep my laptop cold; at best, they managed to reduce its heat. And they all had their own issues. Most of them, including the Thermaltake device, had plastic legs that quickly cracked and shattered.I chose to use the Havit 5 fan unit here, and I am quite happy and amazed by the results. While seated on my sofa and using this enormous, outdated laptop to write, it has been on all day. The laptop feels cold to the touch. The fan speed adjustment dial on the side is pretty nice, yet even at its greatest levels, it is incredibly quiet (many cooling pads have fans that give off an irritating whine.) The pad's little legs, which can be retracted, do a wonderful job of elevating the pad off of whatever surface you have it on. They appeared to be well-designed and not prone to breaking.Since I frequently leave my laptop on my bedside table at night in a dark room, the LEDs' glaring red color NEARLY prevented me from purchasing this. However, my laptop completely blocks the lights, so that's not an issue. The ONLY issue I have is that a few of the tiny rubber pads that are attached to the pad's bottom have come off and I've lost them, but that is small in comparison to the fact that this cooling pad really cools my laptop, which was previously uncoolable!

TopMate C5 12-15.6 inch Gaming Laptop Cooler Cooling Pad | 5 Quiet Fans and LCD Screen | 2500RPM Strong Wind Designed for Gamers and Office Review:

I bought this and have been using it for a week. It is reasonably priced and keeps my laptop pleasantly cool. I have a Toshiba I-7 with a very sizable (16" screen) and a 2GB video card. I cleaned out and checked my internal fans, and they appear to be in good shape, but my laptop has been overheating. I do keep it on the table at work, but there isn't much area for air underneath. The surface was growing warm to the touch, and efficiency was clearly declining. It is running like a champ and is kept incredibly cool by this pad. With this pad, you may tilt it up in 4 additional places for a total of 5 positions, including flat. How many and how quickly fans run is under your control. Since I nearly always have mine plugged in, I just keep them all running at the highest setting. I suppose it might be a problem if you were using batteries power. I've given the actual measurements because I think the measurements are a touch off. This pad has some upper parts that actually flare out, so its width at its widest point measures 14.5", and its height from top to bottom measures 11.75". It was important to me since I wanted to use one of the auxiliary pockets in my laptop bag to store this cooling pad so I wouldn't have to carry it around separately. Happily, it barely fit.

Kootek Laptop Cooling Pad 12"-17" Cooler Pad Chill Mat 5 Quiet Fans LED Lights and 2 USB 2.0 Ports Adjustable Mounts Laptop Stand Height Angle Review:

My laptop is 17.5" in size, which is larger than the typical 12 to 15" size. It can be difficult to find any kind of attachment for this laptop, and I was hesitant to get this cooling pad because I haven't had a lot of positive experiences with cooling pads with laptops in the past. But I did need one for my new laptop, and someone else said it fit their large laptop comfortably, and another person said their daughter uses it just fine in the comfort of her bed (which is what I also do, so I needed something that wouldn't be terrible on my legs or the rumbled blankets), and I must admit, I'm very impressed! The lighting is neither very bright or distracting. You have a choice between using the four small fans or the large central fan. You can choose to employ either one, both at once, neither, or neither at all. Except for the fans, there is no way to turn off the lights, but happily, none of that concerns me. It has two tiny catchers on the front, which are not intrusive nor bothersome, and it's not terribly loud either. One of the best goods I've ever purchased from Amazon, in my opinion. This is something I really advise for larger laptops.
