Best Gel Ink Pens in 2020

PILOT G2 Premium Refillable & Retractable Rolling Ball Gel Pens, Fine Point, Black Ink, 12 Count (31020) Review:

I frikkin' love these pens! I tend to find a lot of pens on the ground, but this one takes the cake! The one I found was the navy blue one. I love the way it writes. I don't have to press down hard (or at all really) on the paper to get the ink flowing. When I write with it, it's so smooth and writes seamlessly without all the tiny line breaks you get with regular ballpoint pens. After my navy blue G-2 ran out of ink, I bought a pack of 12 black G-2's. They're very nice, but I kind of miss the subtle blue of the navy blue pen, so I'm going to buy these pens in red, green, navy blue, and blue because I find that these colors are least likely to fade on paper over time. And I write a lot so I go through a LOT of pens!

PILOT G2 Premium Refillable & Retractable Rolling Ball Gel Pens, Bold Point, Black Ink, 12 Count (31256) Review:

I'm a red pen junkie. I write in red all the time for notes, journaling, everything. LOVE IT.
I used another brand that discontinued my favorite all time pen so I was forced to hunt my next favorite pen. This is it. One thing I never liked about the pens with caps was that the pocket clip (which I NEVER used anyway) tended to poke me in the top of my hand when writing. If I took the top off, they sometimes seemed to grow legs, walk off on their own and I ended up with a capless pen bleeding all over everything. I haven't noticed that this one bleeds, as I am sure I have dropped at least one in my purse while open and have seen no new "blood" stains on the lining.

Not the case here due to the old school retractable point feature. Nothing to get lost. As you can see, the pocket clip is rounded on the end so it won't poke, but it is also shorter than the last pens I used so it seldom touches my hand.

The grip area is padded with some ridges so gripping is easy. The ink distribution is smooth and uniform. Color red is good.

I can't believe I have so much to say about a pen...but I'm a writer so this matters.

100 Color Glitter Gel Pen Set, 30% More Ink Neon Glitter Coloring Pens Art Marker for Adult Coloring Books Bullet Journal Crafting Doodling Drawing Review:

I am absolutely ga ga in love with this set of 100 glitter gel pens and to be honest I did not expect to be at all.

I’m a bit of a gel pen aficionado who specializes in the glitter variety. I have thousands of gel pens (see included photo of just a few of my favorites in my collection to prove it. The ones that don’t make it to these bags just go in a box because life is too short to waste on bad pens) and have tried pretty much every brand here on Amazon. I have $100 sets down to $7 sets and everything in between. I am telling you all of this so that you may know I have some knowledge of quality.

Throughout my journey I have learned a lot of things, especially what I like and what I don’t like in a pen as well as what works and what doesn’t for me. This set just about covers all of my needs. The things it doesn’t have is refills available for purchase separately (but I am completely fine with that because the set itself is so inexpensive that it costs about the same to purchase a whole new set and I don’t care for matching refills with their matching tubes anyways) and it comes in that awful folding plastic package like all the other sets out there which I can’t stand but is also easily fixable by simply removing the pens and tossing that case! With the exception of the refills and the case, this set has the comfort grips, the tight caps, the fatter ink cartridge (which holds more ink and therefore lasts longer), the most individually unique color variety in the largest selection, super consistent and reliable flow, glides super smooth on the page, has the nice broad 1mm tip, dries decently fast without smearing, has SUPER sparkly ink, and excellent customer service. So basically to shorten it up: I’m in love!!!

Seriously, every one of my sets seems to have the exact same colors and I’ve come to the conclusion that the ink all comes from the same manufacturer and the individual companies just package them differently. With this set though there are colors I have never seen before and they’re absolutely beautiful! I have included a couple photos of some of the more unique colors in this set to illustrate as well as a photo or two of some artwork I have done exclusively using these pens. There is even a pale, peachy pink skin tone one that works beautifully on my mermaids which is what started this whole journey in the first place (I couldn’t find a set that had a good skin tone color.) Also, the sparkle is up there with GelWriter and Gelly Roll’s in the amount of glitter it lays down. Absolutely beautiful!

The other amazing thing about this set is how long the ink lasts, especially with how heavy the flow is! I have had gel pens go from brand new to empty before even finishing a page and here I am nearly done with an entire coloring book and I’m still at well over 2/3 the ink!!! I don’t know how they even accomplished this but they certainly did.

If the saying “you get what you pay for” is true then these pens are the exception for sure. I overlooked this set for so long due to it’s price and I know that sounds stupid but I had purchased cheap sets in the past too many times and didn’t want any more junky pens that barely work. I am so glad I finally tried these though because otherwise I would never have found the perfect gel pen and my personal favorite. Now that I have I will not be purchasing any other sets and will instead just re-order these as needed. I never would have guessed that the cheapest set was the best set I’ve ever had! It just doesn’t get any better than that!

PILOT G2 Premium Refillable & Retractable Rolling Ball Gel Pens, Ultra Fine Point, Black Ink, 12 Count (31277) Review:

I'm a lefty. This means I'm the girl that leaves 'drag marks' from my hand, while the side of my hand remains the color of the ink I've been using. Not with these pens. I discovered a few years ago that the gel dries quickly, doesn't 'drag' with my hand. Oh, how I have fallen for these pens. So much that I hold them with an iron fist, so nobody swipes them. If someone asks to use my pen, I won't take my eyes off of them, and the second they stop writing, I reach for MY pen. ;) I'm the overprotective mother, they are MY pens. I found that the ULTRA FINE ink is the only pen I like now, the extremely fine scribe is just right. I'll never use another brand or size, and should rumors swirl of removal from market, I'll be buying them up until my funds are exhausted to ensure I've a lifetime supply. And THAT is how much I love them. No kidding. Ask anyone who knows me. They'll happily tell you how 'selfish' I am with my Pilot G2 Gel Pens. And I am not ashamed to admit, they're right.

PILOT G2 Premium Refillable & Retractable Rolling Ball Gel Pens, Extra Fine Point, Black Ink, 12 Count (31002) Review:

I normally write with felt-tip pens, but on occasion ball points are needed. I have used several before, but happened to borrow one of these from my brother for some quick note and decided to get my own. They write smooth, without ever skipping, gumming up, or blotching. I also love the click top as opposed to a lid, as it makes the transition from storing to writing that much faster! Depending on what type of surface you are writing on (glossy vs. matte finish), the ink can smudge a bit, but that's to be expected with any type of non-permanent maker/pen. If I run out of these, I will certainly re-order Pilot G2, but may opt for the fine vs. extra fine point.

PILOT FriXion Clicker Erasable, Refillable & Retractable Gel Ink Pens, Fine Point, Assorted Color Inks, 10-Pack (FXC10001F-P) Review:

Bought these pens for my planner about a month ago (April 2016), and the pens have been holding up very nicely. The black pen is used the most often, but all the pens have about the same ink consistency.

Pros:
- Pen retracts by clicking the pen's pocket holder clip. No need to uncap the 'eraser' end to erase ink.
- Colors are vibrant, except for the black (more like a dark grey).
- Ink consistency is like regular gel pens. Not very much pressure is required to write solid lines.
- Intentional erasing will almost completely erase markings. See attached photos.

Cons:
- Hasn't happened to me, but I heard that leaving the pens/written materials in a hot car will make the ink disappear. But I also heard that putting the previously heated pen/ink in the freezer for a while will make the ink reappear. I've been mindful of this, and been careful not to leave my pen set in my car.
