With that said, let's get started.Okay, the unit's shell is well-made and doesn't have a lip over the drive door like many other drives do, so using the drive is simple regardless of how you position it.A huge bonus is that the drive slade doesn't pause when you open it or close it.It's a DVD RW drive, as for the drive. I used Windows 10 64-bit pro/home to test this disk. It simply functions out of the box. I tested it with Ubuntu Linux, and it functions properly without the need to look for drivers.It doesn't function with any version of Android, including 5.1 through 9.0, as I tried to test it with that operating system. This drive lacks the necessary firmware to appear as a USB storage device. Please consider a different drive if you would prefer or require that.Regarding playing DVD movies, it does a good job and doesn't make a lot of noise while spinning.Regarding burning, it works well at a 10x pace; the few times I was able to push it past 10x, the disk turned into a roller coaster. Because it lacks a second USB port to obtain the necessary power for the drive to function as a burner on a system without USB 3, I discovered that you should give up on using this drive to burn if you don't have a USB 3 port. Although I had to test the USB type C converter on a friend's iPad because I don't own any type C devices, it does function.Just a quick tip: if you get this drive, consider purchasing a USB 3 extension cable because the fixed cord is only a few inches long. I just purchased a new laptop without a hard drive. I occasionally have to install something to remove some old files from a drive. The build quality of this gadget astonished me. I already have one from LG, but it has a rather flimsy feeling compared to this one, which makes me feel more confident packing it into my backpack and lugging it around. It has so far performed as anticipated and is capable of carrying out my needs. However, I believe there are a few areas that may be improved. First off, it's quite noisy; you can plainly hear the inside mechanism when it's operating. Another thing is that, although though the chord it comes with works, I wish it had a longer one. Finding a spot for the reader can be challenging, especially for me since my laptop has USB connections on the rear.

I recently purchased a 13" Two-In-One running Windows 10 called the Dell Inspiron 13 5000 (configuration 13-5378). There is no optical drive in it. Please take note that I did not test activities like DVD burning, copying files to a DVD-R, and reading files from a DVD-R.Although I didn't measure it, the unit I received is quiet and seems to move quickly enough. The only thing I have to say is that $32 is too expensive. Similar optical drives from Samsung and other manufacturers cost $25 or less.

I purchased this to watch DVDs and burn CDs on my Acer laptop running Ubuntu. It was telling me that the K3b CD burning program didn't have permission to access the CD creator at first, but all I had to do to solve it was open a terminal and run sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/wodim; sudo chmod 4711 /usr/bin/cdrdao. Following that, everything went without a hitch, and I was able to burn a couple CDs. The DVD drive offers to open with Videos when I insert it, but that results in an error. To open the CD, you must download VLC media player from the Ubuntu Software store. I'm quite pleased with my buy because it fulfills my expectations! Even with two younger children, time will tell how well this stands up, but for the price, it's fantastic!Update: I attempted to use this to play a DVD on my child's Windows 10 Dell laptop. It took some searching to find a free program without advertisements or a bothersome watermark because the VLC media player was broken. However, I did eventually locate one! "Any Media Player- Video, DVD, VLC, TV Play for Free" is how it is referred to. It's free and hassle-free, and it works great. The VLC player from Ubuntu appears to be somewhat comparable.

When my eight-year-old iMac's Superdrive failed, I grabbed this. I hoped that for the $80 or so that an external Mac drive costs, I would at least be able to use this one to SOME extent. I burned about 200 DVDs over that time, which was significantly more than I had anticipated, and I think I saw maybe a dozen films.
