Best Box Springs in 2022

Last update: December 31, 2022

Can you use another mattress instead of a box spring?

If you have a mattress but no box spring, you might be wondering if you can just use the mattress by itself. Unfortunately, this is not recommended. Mattresses are designed to be used with box springs, which provide support and stability. Without a box spring, your mattress will not last as long and may not be as comfortable.

Can you use plywood as a box spring?

You can use plywood as a box spring, but it is not as durable as a traditional box spring. Plywood can break down over time and is not as supportive as a box spring.

Do bed bugs get in box springs?

Box springs are often the target of bed bugs because they offer many hiding places. Bed bugs can enter box springs through cracks and holes in the fabric. They can also climb up the legs of the bed and into the box spring. Once inside, they will lay their eggs and feed on blood. To prevent bed bugs from getting in your box spring, seal any cracks or holes in the fabric and regularly inspect the bed for signs of bed bugs.

Do I need a box spring if I have a bed frame?

If you have a bed frame, you generally do not need a box spring. A box spring is designed to support a mattress and is usually placed on top of a bed frame. However, if your bed frame does not have enough support, you may need a box spring.

Zinus Victor 4 Inch Low Profile Quick Lock Smart Box Spring / Mattress Foundation / Strong Steel Structure / Easy Assembly, Twin Review:

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to purchase a platform bed or boxspring, especially those who are short, have special needs, use a wheelchair, or simply prefer a bed that isn't as high. It is available in twin, full, Queen, King, and this one. No ridiculous, breakable wood slats. This can be used with a bedframe as the boxspring because it truly IS the boxspring and is strong and durable. You could also use it as a platform (which is what my daughter needs) and exclude the frame and boxspring as it is actually one. Both memory foam mattresses and conventional innerspring mattresses can be utilized with it. I think it can hold the weight of the mattress and up to 500 lbs.The cost of this varies according to size. It is a queen-size bed. Through Amazon, this was $119 with free shipping. It feels and looks like it would have cost much more than $119 and is quite strong. The assembly process was far too simple—so simple that there were no printed instructions at all. The only information provided was a diagram showing how to install the bars and rails and what size screws to use. The slates snap in place after 16 screws. There are a lot of metal slates around. It comes with the tool needed to put it together. Even a few more screws that are designated as extra parts are there. It includes a zippered cloth encasement cover. It is not required to use and is optional.Additionally, the black metal of this bed is quite contemporary, but because it is so understated, if you are using it as a platform bed, you can use it with just about any design. This bed frame does not clash with my adult daughter's antique/shabby chic girlie decor. Additionally, you won't even notice it if you size up your bedspread or quilt.Oh, and this platform frame does not support headboards or footboards, according to what I have read, but my daughter is not interested in that anyhow. She has specific requirements and will use a wheelchair for the rest of her life; this frame is ideal for her new 11" mattress. Additionally, she needs to be nearer the ground in case she were to unintentionally roll off. Accidents do happen, but she does a fairly good job of preventing allowing it happen. Just a heads-up if you are, or know, someone who has physical impairments or limits who needs something closer to the ground. Her mattress is 11" deep, but if you have a smaller child, who has special needs, or physical limitations, you can obtain a mattress that's only 6"-8" deep. My daughter is around 5'2". 115 lbs. a 26-year-old.

Zinus Walter 4 Inch Low Profile Metal Box Spring with Wood Slats, Twin Review:

This review of my experience is extensive and in-depth: I adore the way this box "spring" is made. Please take note that this is more of a box support than a true boxspring, as others have noted. I purchased mine to pair with my soon-to-arrive new Purple bed. My husband and I actually had no trouble putting the metal frame together. It arrived with clear labels and the necessary tools for assembly. I wasn't sure how I would space the wooden planks, which made them appear a little frightening. To my pleasure, the planks already had velcro attached to them. We simply needed to line the upper and lower ends of the pre-existing velcro strips on the metal frame, pull tautly between each plank, and tie them together in the middle. Now, the difficult part that led the majority of reviewers to award it three or fewer stars was the cover. It took us approximately an hour to put the cover on after we opened the cover, unzipped it, and inserted the frame. We managed to put the cover on, but when we tried to zip it up, there was a gap of around 4 inches. This explains why there were conflicting reviews, I reasoned. After struggling with this cover for 30 to 40 minutes, my husband had an idea: why don't we turn the frame? I found this absurd because it is obvious which side is long and which is short. I first called the customer support line since I was so against the notion. (Note: I was able to reach them when I called the number provided by Amazon. They suggested contacting Amazon because they are dependable. My husband persuaded me to simply turn the frame. It took 10 seconds to zip close after I consented after scoffing and being uncooperative. So be careful; if anything doesn't function, it's probably not the cover; simply turn the frame. Once I've utilized the frame for approximately a month, I'll update. It has therefore been much longer than a month. What a dream this box spring is! Exactly supports my bed. Next year, I'll place an order for another one for the guest room. I'm quite happy with my buy.

Zinus Jayanna 4 Inch Low Profile BiFold Box Spring / Folding Mattress Foundation / Strong Steel Structure / No Assembly Required, Twin Review:

You may watch my review and unpacking of the product if you search for my account on YouTube (dugroz). This unassuming foundation performs exactly what it claims to do and does it quite well. An elderly or weak individual would probably need assistance because it comes in a rather large box and is somewhat hefty. Unboxing it, however, eliminates the need for assembly; simply unfold it, turn it over, and zip it up. (As others have stated, you need to flip it over if you open it instinctively.) It would be quite simple to move with you. There aren't any springs inside, thus this isn't a "Box of Springs." It's okay because 95 percent of modern mattresses don't require a proper "box spring" in any case. Your mattress will only be raised for this purpose. Neither does it nor is it intended to soften the mattress. The name "Foundation" is preferable. The bars are spaced about three inches apart and are roughly 1/4 inch thick. The height of the Foundation (as measured by me) was nearly 4 1/4". (no big deal for me, but just noteworthy if you need "exactly" 4 inches in height).Because the bottom is foam, I was a little hesitant to use this with my hybrid mattress out of concern that it would sink through. However, the mattress business responded to my email and told me that using this foundation was fine (I have a Sapira mattress). It has been in use for about 3 weeks, and so far it is holding up nicely. The mattress also works well with it. extremely strong; no sagging. Not a sound or squeak. The paperwork that came with it claims that queen-sized beds and up can support 2,400 lbs. of weight, which seems a bit absurd (2 people plus mattress weighing 2,400 lbs??? ), but the idea is that it is sturdy. The sides are made of a lovely white textile pattern. We have not felt the need to cover it with a sheet like we did with our previous one because it is nice enough! If your bed setup calls for a height of 4 inches, I would suggest this foundation.Edit: 05/01/2017 - still doing fantastic.

Zinus Justina Quick Snap Standing Mattress Foundation / Platform Bed / No Box Spring Needed / Beige, Narrow Twin Review:

I didn't need to use the mallet because it was so simple to put together. The metal cone that was used to guide one of the cross bars had a damaged weld when it arrived, but it had no impact on installation. It takes some effort to fit the frame within the zipped slip cover. Instead of attempting to slide the frame over at the end, if I were to rebuild, I would construct the frame inside the cover. I would advise adding felt or leveling pads on the bottom of the frame's legs if you intend to set it on a solid surface. The wooden legs have the dowel screws improperly installed (which you will notice when you screw them into the frame, or you can roll the leg on a solid surface and watch the screw "wobble") Without leveling pads or felt, it will put a lot of pressure on the leg's rim and cause laminate flooring to crease sharply.

Zinus Armita 7 Inch Smart Box Spring / Mattress Foundation / Strong Steel Structure / Easy Assembly Required, Twin Review:

This box spring really impresses me. The craftsmanship is superb, and the build quality is fantastic. Years ago, after assembling a wide variety of furniture, beds, etc., I delivered furniture. Although I have seen various alternate box springs and other things, this one wins. Due to the grip of the wood's nails, this box-spring will not deteriorate with time and squeak like a conventional wooden one would (a common issue with squeaking in construction).First, I didn't even need the instructions; assembly only took me about 20 minutes. This was simple for me to put together by myself, and I was also able to move it by myself. If you assemble it on a level surface, like the floor, one person can put it together by themselves because the components are conveniently labelled "up" where you might get lost in the process of construction, and it remains together well enough before adding the bolts/nuts.I appreciate that this boxspring can be disassembled as well if someone wants to fit it into a small space. The boxspring, which cannot fold or bend, is, in my opinion, the worst aspect of delivering a bed. I switched from a two-part box spring for a queen-sized mattress to this, and it makes almost no noise. The parts fit together perfectly and there is outstanding craftsmanship. The "slats" are simply sitting in place, but they are wedged in place and do not move out of position because there are no fasteners holding them in place. The zipper comes toward the center of the box-spring far enough to clear the side boards of my bed, so I will have to see if the zipper sustains damage over time from the downward pressure. The only weak spot I could think of was having the zipper face down so that the zipper part of it sits on frame (possibly cracking the zipper or its mechanism). No need to criticize anything for that.Edit: As of December 1, 2017, there have been no squeaks at all and the area is still completely peaceful. This box spring comes highly recommended to anyone searching for a keeper for life. It's still a great boxspring as of July 2019!

Zinus Armita 9 Inch High Profile Smart Box Spring / Mattress Foundation / Strong Steel Structure / Easy Assembly Required, Twin Review:

First of all, I was pleasantly impressed by the box spring's quality. Only one night of use, but thus far there have been no squeaks. I should also mention that if anything goes wrong, I'll update this review.I spent a couple of hours reading through all of the questions and answers before placing my order. I'm very glad I did because several customers had complained about the cover and the difficulty getting it on. Even though it is a very tight fit, if I can manage it at my age, anyone can. It would not be as difficult to place over the box spring if the maker added an additional 1/4 to 1/2 inch of cloth. Before placing my order, I also watched the video twice, and that was simple to understand. It was quite helpful that four of the pieces had yellow stickers with the word "up" on them. The pieces should have all been labeled "A, B, C, D, etc." This would have cut down on the assembling time by at least an hour. While I was assembling, I did go back and watch the video once again. It took me four hours to arrange the pieces correctly, confirm their arrangement, tighten the hardware, and other tasks. After putting the box spring together, I went around and applied pressure to each piece to make sure everything was as tight as possible. It might have taken me longer to put it together because I have vision impairment. At my age, I wonder if I should have hired someone to check that everything was securely fastened. I'll ask someone to assist me in tightening anything that becomes loosened over time.Overall, things are going well. I have a very hefty mattress on top, and as I've already mentioned, the box spring doesn't squeak and seems to be very sturdy. In other words, the box spring is immobile.Update to come if anything happens.Edited on Mar. 26, 2019 I've been using this for seventeen months. Absolutely no issues, no squeaks! I'm still as pleased as I was when I initially evaluated it in October 2017. Furthermore, I still firmly advise purchasing this box spring.Update as of 10 October 2019. On this box spring's second anniversary, there are once more no squeaks and no issues. Still firmly advise using this box springHighly suggested.

Zinus Armita 5 Inch Low Profile Smart Box Spring / Mattress Foundation / Strong Steel Structure / Easy Assembly Required, Twin Review:

I started assembling the box spring as soon as I got it. When I opened it, the plastic straps were cracked or broken, and I saw that several of the bars had scratches and that the plastic on the ends of the bars was also damaged. The goods was probably returned used and resold used. I was rather let down because I didn't order a used box spring. The cover was sent to me as fresh new.As soon as I realized which letters went with which pieces, construction was easy. I also assume that the item was sold used for this reason. It took me longer to figure out which piece was which letter because I had trouble identifying them. The process of putting everything together would have gone considerably more quickly if the letters had been fastened to the relevant piece and strapped with the matching piece. In general, I'm pleased with the outcome. For Christmas, my girlfriend and I received the funds we needed to purchase the bedroom set we had been eyeing since May 2017. I've been attempting to purchase furniture for months, but my girlfriend insisted that we wait until her mother had the funds to do so. This was a farewell gift. We have only been sleeping on a mattress on the floor since May. We are finally raised. The frame is comfy and strong. inexpensive and simple to assemble (once you find out which piece goes where). Did I mention that cleaning the box spring's cover will be simpler and that you can easily replace it for a reasonable price if it is torn? This product is for you if you're on a tight budget and want to save the extra money. Box springs can be quite pricey, however this allowed me to save extra cash.

Zinus Edgar 4 Inch Low Profile Wood Box Spring / Mattress Foundation, Twin Review:

(Queen 8 ") My concerns regarding this product increased after reading the numerous reviews. For the price, this product is fantastic.I observed that it had been assembled in under 20 minutes. Overall, it took me about an hour, but I wasn't rushing. I took care to align the frame on a flat section of the floor and to begin the screws in each of the four corners (8 screws). I tried the center portion in both orientations, but one fit better than the other, so I started those four screws in that direction. I then tightened the screws in diagonal motions, similar to how you would torque a wheel's lug nuts, letting the frame settle into the attachment points rather than attempting to remove all of the slack at once. By the third time, the box frame was square and tight, and the screws were tight. The slats were simple to install and spaced 2 1/2 inches apart "apart. One reviewer stapled the boards down, which is a wonderful suggestion if you like to adjust every little detail. I almost did this and might still do it if the slats start to clatter, but so far, things are going well.making the cover fit. I was concerned about this but amazed when I saw how well it fit the frame. Once more, getting in line took some time. I adjusted and slightly stretched the bottom of the cover as I went around the base of the frame. I moved the top corners up and onto the top of the frame and it simply and safely zipped up after it appeared that the corners were equally lined with the corners of the frame and the seems were aligned with the edge of the frame. Therefore, I advise you to not be afraid of this basis. It will be sturdy if you're prepared to spend a few extra minutes carefully putting it together.

Zinus Daniel 4 Inch Essential Box Spring / Mattress Foundation / Easy Assembly Required, Twin Review:

The directions that came with the box showed you how to put this box spring together in a way that was really simple to understand. The only real setup required is to square up the boards and secure a vertical bar inside the box spring so that you can put down the boards that rest on top of the box spring. This fit my king-sized bed just right. Overall, I would estimate that setting up took me around 30 minutes, and I took my time.5/5 for ease of installation and as-expected delivery.

Zinus Keenan 14 Inch Free Standing Smart Box Spring / Mattress Foundation / With 6 Support Legs / Strong Steel Structure / Easy Assembly Required, Twin Review:

Okay, so both my hubby and I are overweight. And we need a box spring sturdy enough to support our large arses. We previously used a regular box spring, but both sides sagged, making it feel as though we might roll out of bed when we lay down. I was wary of this box spring and its accompanying legs in particular. To my astonishment, though, it did not begin to scream at us as though our weight was killing it. Strong and sturdy. And lastly, a restful night's sleep!

Do people still use box springs?

A box spring is a type of bed base typically composed of a wooden frame covered in cloth and containing springs. Box springs are usually placed on top of a bed frame and under a mattress. While box springs used to be a common bedding component, many people now forego them in favor of other options, such as platform beds or simply placing their mattress on the floor. One reason for this shift is that box springs can be quite expensive, and they are not always necessary. For example, if you have a platform bed or a mattress that is designed to be used without a

Do you need airflow under a mattress?

If you want your mattress to last, you need to ensure there is airflow underneath it. This will allow the mattress to breathe and prevent mold and mildew from forming. If you live in a humid climate, you may need to invest in a mattress cover that has vents to help promote airflow.

Does a box spring make a difference?

A box spring can make a difference in terms of both comfort and support. While a mattress alone can provide a comfortable sleeping surface, a box spring can help to evenly distribute weight and provide additional support, which can be especially helpful for those with back pain. Additionally, a box spring can help to prolong the life of a mattress by absorbing some of the wear and tear that can occur over time.

How can I support my mattress without a box spring?

If you have a mattress without a box spring, you can support it a few different ways. One way is to put the mattress on the floor. This is not the most ideal situation, but it will work in a pinch. Another way is to purchase a mattress foundation, which is a platform that the mattress sits on. This will give the mattress some support and make it more comfortable to sleep on. Finally, you can purchase a bed frame that has slats or a solid platform. This will also help to support the mattress and keep it from sagging.

How do I know if my box spring is worn out?

If your box spring is over 10 years old, it is probably time to replace it. Look for signs of sagging or collapsing, which can be a sign that the springs are worn out. Also, check for any visible damage, such as rips or holes. If you can see the coils inside the box spring, it is definitely time for a new one.

How long do box springs last?

Box springs are one of the most important pieces of furniture in the home. They provide support for the mattress and help to absorb shock and wear. They can last for many years if they are properly cared for, but they will eventually need to be replaced. The average lifespan of a box spring is about 10 years.
