I've had this for a few weeks now; it was a Christmas present. I knew this was going to take some time because I had around 4 large plastic containers full of yarn skeins and balls that I intended to convert into cakes. The Stanwood yarn winder performed incredibly well. The sheet of instructions that came with it was not as clear as they should have been, which made setup a little bit difficult. However, I eventually understood everything without needing to turn to a YouTube video. (Having a backup strategy in place was comforting.)I had skeins as large as 7 ounces that I needed to wind into cakes. They were simply handled by the yarn winder. By the time I was finished winding them, they were HUGE yarn cakes, so I'm pleased I purchased this larger model so it could accommodate the larger skeins. Since I don't think it could have handled so much yarn in one cake, I didn't try to wind anything larger than 7 ounces. Personally, I believe that cutting a 10-ounce skein into two 5-ounce cakes or a one-pounder into three cakes would be preferable.The Stanwood goes pretty smoothly, depending on the skein of yarn you are trying to wind, however if there is a "hitch" in the yarn coming from the skein, the Stanwood will glitch and delay. If that occurs, you will need to exert some effort to continue turning the crank.In the yarn winder, I assisted in guiding the yarn. However, it seemed to wind better if I held the strand of yarn coming from the skein with my left hand and turned the crank with my right. I suppose you could just let it feed directly from the skein into the machine. Even while it still functions, it's odd how it eventually takes on that shape. I'll go back to the yarn winder and reform the cake once more. I don't think it's a huge concern because it literally takes no time at all to do.Since getting this a few weeks ago, I've wound probably around 125–150 skeins and balls of yarn, and I must say that I'm really delighted I have it. For many years, I used a smaller (4 ounce) ball winder that was enclosed in plastic. It had seen better days, so I made the decision that it was time to spend money on a winder that was more substantial (also, it was my birthday, so *technically* it was a gift). Naturally, this was delivered swiftly through Prime, and I was pleasantly surprised by how substantial it is!The winder is substantial, as it must be to hold 10 oz. This should work since the majority of the balls I wind have 100g of sock yarn. I put it to the test using six sport weight skeins of yarn, each with roughly 200 yards. Compared to my old winder, the crank took some getting used to, but it was simply better. Because the flier travels rather than the cylinder, the yarn never "skips," unlike with my prior winder, and I no longer had to regularly tension the yarn from my fast.My spouse might have been upset that I didn't really have any yarn to wind when it arrived because I was in the middle of numerous projects at the time.

I noticed that this brand was more expensive than the competition, but it appeared lot more sturdy in the image. The others appeared to be rather weak. It still seemed to be the sturdy item in the picture when I got it today. I quickly constructed 3 cakes using skeins that I had that were 4 oz or less after putting it together and clamping it to my table. It couldn't handle anything bigger, but as far as I can tell, none of them can. The little package of goodies they include is a collection of items I would have purchased separately but desired for my knitting. As opposed to what many have remarked about other brands, the yarn holder arm of this product is strong and solid. The only thing that worried me was that I had to use so much power to snap the spindle on it after I got it that I was concerned it could break. Nothing broke when I put the spindle on, so everything is fine. Because of my terrible wrists, I think this equipment is definitely worthwhile.

Ensure that the wire arm is positioned correctly. Read the instructions carefully; they are useful.2. If you use a tiny, fluorescent piece of duck tape to hold down the start end (just split it into small pieces and stick them on the edge of your work area), you can easily peel or roll it off and around that end to make it simple to find when it's time to utilize it.3. As you remove your yarn off the spindle, fold the outer wrap rather than discarding it and slide it into the middle of your yarn ball. This accomplishes two things: it keeps the center constant and makes the information accessible for future use as a reference. (Be sure to remove it before using the yarn because doing so will cause it to catch on the yarn.4. I'm here to persuade you to do yourself a favor and buy this Swift and Wonder bundle if you are thinking about doing so. I have been hand-winding my hanks because I am a beginning knitter. In all honesty, that was probably the trickiest aspect of knitting. This set has not only sped up and made winding easier for me, but it has also inspired me to wind ALL of the hanks I've been accumulating. Because because yarn winding is suddenly pleasant! And I had no idea how orderly my knitting collection would be if I used cakes rather than hanks or skeins! My collection now "sparks joy," as Marie Kondo would say. Incredibly simple to knit with as well! Additionally, I don't worry if the cakes begin to unravel while I'm using them (I carry a lot of my projects), because I know that I can simply rewind them!I was concerned that, given their cost (I paid $38 for the set), these tools would be of poor quality and might harm my (fairly expensive) yarn because I am somewhat picky about the quality of the knitting supplies I use (I almost exclusively use merino wool, Addi needles, glass stitch markers, etc.). I didn't want to buy a premium one because I wasn't sure I really needed a swift/winder (I did); I'd rather spend my money on yarn and needles. However, these are fantastic! I must admit that when I initially used the swift, the yarn was feeding downward and becoming tangled up in the metal rungs. However, I soon discovered that the swift's height (and pretty much everything else on it) could be modified, so I did exactly that. I moved the swift closer to the table so that the yarn would feed straight into the winder, eliminating the unwelcome angle. As you can see in the final image, I raised it to make it level with the winder at the point where the swift's metal spoke is below the plane of the table surface.In terms of the winder, it is likewise fantastic! The maximum amount of yarn it can hold is 100g, and it winds that amount flawlessly (so long as the yarn is taught and the tension is consistent). The right amount of tension spontaneously develops when I use the quick in conjunction with the winder. However, I had to use my hand to control the yarn feed when I was rewinding skeins into the cakes for storage (which was almost fun because it went so quickly!). I should also mention that the deep pink yarn on the winder in my photos is 130g, and the winder handled it beautifully! I didn't even realize it until I compared the size of the cake to the others and looked at the label on the yarn. I must admit that I was impressed!In conclusion, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing this set if you are thinking about it. Your knitting life will improve as a result. And it's really a lot. Such a tiny cost for knitting happiness!
