Pinking shears are a type of scissors with saw-tooth blades that create a zig-zag pattern. They are often used to finish the raw edges of fabric to prevent fraying. So, are pinking shears worth it? In my opinion, yes! Pinking shears are a great way to finish the edges of fabric and they can also be used to create unique patterns in fabric.

Pinking shears are a type of scissors that have serrated blades. The serrated blades create a zigzag pattern, which helps to prevent fabric from fraying. Pinking shears can be used on a variety of fabrics, including denim. When using pinking shears on denim, it is important to use a light touch. I've been sewing for almost 40 years, and in that time, I've used a wide variety of scissors (both types and brands). For a recent craft project, I purchased these Hui Tong Fabric Scalloped Pinking Shears (size 7mm). For my project, I didn't want to use regular pinking shears with serrated blades. I was able to locate the scalloped variety I was seeking for on Amazon. I'm VERY happy with this purchase. They make good shears. To the very tip, they cut cleanly and precisely. I've tested them on white cotton batting and a piece of smooth, yellow acrylic felt. (View images) I will unquestionably purchase these from HUI TONG if I acquire the smaller 5 mm size. If you're looking for scalloped pinking shears, they won't let you down, and the price is also fairly fair.(Scalloped 7mm Hui Tong Fabric Pinking Shears, Serrated and Pinking Shears, Total 6 Models))

These were successful in my most recent project. They are slower and heavier to use than regular scissors, but I haven't used any other pinking shears to make a comparison. I read that pinking was crucial to preventing fraying while making beeswax wraps out of cotton fabric. Since they don't function the same as regular scissors, I would suggest watching a YouTube video on how to use them properly. Additionally, avoid using them on paper as they could become dull and difficult to sharpen.

Well crafted scalloped shears. I have strong opinions about these shears both good and con, so here goes - ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————Pro's1) Very soft rubber non-slip grip.2) I can see the scallop on the blades at the beginning and it goes all the way out the the very end. This allows me to connect a series of scallops without a break.3) Cuts really easy.4) Well crafted. They appear like they will last a lifetime.5) Came in a wonderful gift box.—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————Con's1) As I recall, the maker claims that these scalloped shears can be used by both left-handed and right-handed people. That is not true, at least not for me. These scalloped shears are not comfy in my left hand. (I am left-handed).2) The scallop on the blades is not reversible so when I attempt to use my left hand, I feel a strong inclination to cut out a circle clockwise. This causes the scallop to be inverted (upside down) (upside down). In order to make the scallop come out right while using the shears in my left hand, I had to cut counter-clockwise which seems quite weird. In order for me to cut out a perfect scalloped circle, I have to use my right hand and cut counter-clockwise. That will work but requires a lot of effort. I wish I could get a pair created for left-handers.3) The size of the scallop is modest, roughly 5 scallops per inch. I don't think there is another model with greater scallops.4) These scalloped shears are HEAVY!—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-All in all, I do enjoy these shears and would purchase them again.

Scalloped shears of high quality. Here I will express my passionate opinions on these shears, both pro and con. - ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————Pro's1) A nonslip grip made of very soft rubber.2) The scallop on the blades is visible, starting at the beginning and continuing all the way to the end. This enables me to join several scallops together without a break.3) Cuts quite quickly.4. Well-made. They appear to be built to endure a lifetime.5) Arrived in a classy gift package.—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————Con's1) As I recall, the maker states that both left- and right-handed people may use these scalloped shears. At least not for me, it is untrue. In my left hand, these scalloped shears are uncomfortable. (I use my left hand.)2) Because the scallop on the blades cannot be reversed, whenever I try to use my left hand, I am strongly compelled to cut out a circle in the opposite direction. The scallop is turned upside-down as a result (upside down). I had to cut counter-clockwise while using the shears in my left hand, which feels really weird and prevents the scallop from coming out correctly. I have to use my right hand and cut counter-clockwise to get a lovely scalloped circle. Although it will take a lot of work, that will work. I wish I could order a left-handed pair.3) There are only around 5 scallops per inch in size. There isn't, in my opinion, another model with bigger scallops.4) These shears with scallops are HEAVY!—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-I like these shears overall and would buy them again.

They effortlessly cut through cardstock, paper, and construction paper. The teeth are big enough to make it simple to match up the pattern. The shears themselves appear to be heavy duty with comfortable grips and have considerable weight to them. I have only recently started using these, so I do not yet know how long they will last. My only complaint about them thus far is that they close and open tightly, but that is not always a bad thing. All is well thus far.

After reading the one-star review, I almost decided against buying these, but I really needed a pair and didn't want to spend a lot of money. (I don't know why pinking shears cost so much.) I'm really happy I gave these a shot. These are plenty sharp, and I haven't experienced any problems with fabric tearing, so I'm not sure if the other reviewer received a bad pair or if the design was altered. I don't think these are lightweight either; they are substantial, heavy, and thick enough to do the job without hurting my hands. These are practically as simple to use as conventional scissors, in contrast to other pairs I've tried that demanded a lot of hand muscle to cut. I've used them with equally fantastic results on heavy satin, normal cotton fabric, and thick upholstery-weight velvet fabric. The only two (very) small drawbacks I can identify are that I am unable to fully open these; however, this could not be a problem for someone with larger hands or longer fingers. Additionally, the handles are unpadded, thus heavy cutting may result in little tiredness, but nothing harmful. Not worth taking away a star, especially considering the cost. I am quite pleased with my purchase overall and will happily buy these again. Amazing offer!

GET CRAFTING - No project is too big for these scissors! The serrated/ scalloped blades give projects that extra bit of detail, meaning they are perfect for quilting, tailoring and edging. They can also be used on fabric or paper as they offer a lasting sharp edge that cuts all the way to the tip.
VERSATILE PINKING SHEARS - An essential for your sewing box. The sharp blades are saw-toothed/ arced instead of straight leaving a zigzag pattern as you cut, the sawtooth/ arc pattern can limit the length of the frayed thread of unfinished cloth edges and thus minimize damage.(Note: There is some oil in the blades, and it prevents rust. So before using it, please wipe it up.)

No, you don't need pinking shears for sewing. Pinking shears are used to create a zigzag pattern on fabric. This can be helpful if you want to prevent fraying or add decoration.
Hairspray can be used as a temporary fix to stop fabric from fraying. Simply spray a light layer of hairspray over the affected area and allow it to dry. The hairspray will create a barrier that will help to prevent further fraying.
Mod Podge is a decoupage glue that can be used on fabric, and it will help to stop the fabric from fraying. You can apply it to the edges of the fabric, or you can apply it to the entire surface of the fabric.
To prevent fabric from fraying, use a zigzag stitch or serger on the raw edges. You can also use a product called Fray Check, which is applied to the fabric and dries clear.
There are a few ways to seal fabric edges without sewing. You can use clear nail polish, a hot glue gun, or even duct tape. Simply apply your chosen adhesive to the edge of the fabric and allow it to dry. This will create a barrier that will prevent the fabric from fraying.
To stop fraying without hemming, you can use a product called Fray Check. This is a clear liquid that you apply to the fabric to seal the edges and prevent them from fraying.
