Topo maps are detailed maps that show the topography of an area, and they can be very useful for hiking. They can help you plan your route, and avoid getting lost.
Yes, Google Earth can do topographic maps. You can use the elevation profile tool to measure the elevation of any location on Earth.
Yes, Garmin topo maps show trails. You can use them to see where trails are in your area and plan your hikes accordingly.
Topo maps are usually quite accurate, especially when it comes to the major features of the landscape. However, there can be some discrepancies when it comes to the smaller details. This is why it's always a good idea to use a map and compass in conjunction with each other when you're out in the wilderness.

I purchased this because in the past couple of years while hunting, landowners had harassed me while I was on public land, and one of my closest friends had been fined by the sheriff for trespassing, despite the fact that a game warden had confirmed that he was on public land. In addition, the Wyoming State Land Commissioner later confirmed that the landowner had posted the no trespassing signs 200 yards onto the state land, and after words that the landowner had done so, I felt Wyoming may appear to be a vast, welcoming country, but the local landowners are among the meanest, nastiest people in the United States. ... they control the law enforcement in this state. You owe it to yourself to purchase this product if you want to hunt or fish anywhere in this awful state in order to better protect yourself from the awful landowners, courts, and law enforcement officials there. I work daily in, on, and close to the Basin where I go hunting while I live in the state and am employed by a significant government land agency. Purchase this for your GPS if you intend to hunt on public land anywhere in this lovely hellhole of a state, whether you are a Wyoming resident or a "outsider."

An excellent addition on my Garmin 600t I appreciate having additional information than the unit's base map regarding the ownership of the land, the Township, Range, and Section, as well as Game Management units. Having saying that, I did find some of the old road data from closed roads was not displayed on the map. These roads are useful for trekking or packing out of a region but are not ones you can drive on. I'll largely use this map for hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing, and I'd suggest it for these kinds of outings.

For any hunter, this is a groundbreaking product. This tool adds amazing value for a variety of reasons, whether you are an experienced hunter or a beginner to big game hunting as I am.First off, there is a tremendous quantity of information that can be viewed simultaneously in layers. There are countless variations of layer configurations. Even if you already have a general "feel" for the information this product offers, having it all in one location that is simple to use allows you to concentrate on the hunt and the reason you went out in the first place rather than wasting time fiddling with paper maps or trying to remember specifics about a location you haven't hunted in for a long time.Second, and linked to the previous point, if you enjoy diversity, this product enables you to visit various locations without having to worry about wasting your time or accidentally wandering into a potential honey hole. I'd prefer to discover a fantastic location and stay there, but in Washington, a great location one year may turn out to be a bust the following year since so many people are moving in, making it tougher to find calm areas where animals are content to stay for many years. (Note: If you experiment with the app's many "layers," they can help with this.)Third, the item is remarkably adaptable. On your desktop or laptop, do your research. Then, download offline maps to your phone. As a precaution, maintain a chip in your portable GPS. With these three ways to use the onX product, I can feel at home anywhere—even far from home.Fourth, proceed to purchase both the chip and the subscription. Having the product accessible on both your phone and portable GPS, whether offline maps are included or not, is just fantastic as a backup. If you have children, a wife, or a girlfriend, even if you don't think you need it, these folks will be much happy to know you have the product in various forms. Give your family the piece of mind that comes with possessing this product, if for no other reason.

Great results. There are a few roads that are detours.1) depicts us traveling across a field for nearly 30 miles, yet the road could still be seen on the screen; the location where we were was in the middle of nowhere (and we knew where we were going). 2) There was ONE instance when it was quite difficult to decide which exit we should take while driving through a larger city region with numerous odd exits. Even though we truly needed the second one, we ended up taking the first one. Although returning to our desired location was a little more difficult.Overall, it was efficient and useful.Even at night, the lighting was incredibly strong.

I recently utilized this in great detail to plan different routes for a vacation I had with my small kid. Like Trails Illustrated maps, the "paper" (plastic) is durable and waterproof, and the printing and colors make it simple to read. I was happy to learn that this was just updated (3rd Edition), though I'm not sure what modifications were made aside from the magnetic declination. The publisher's website still lists a 2010 printing date as the most recent (First Edition).Despite being roughly twice as large as USGS quads, the 1:50,000 scale is ideal for route planning and some off-trail activities. You should probably get 1:24,000 maps to supplement this if you plan to travel significantly off-trail in some difficult terrain. The distance between trail intersections is listed, along with several significant rules and the National Forests' contact information.

A top-notch product from a top-notch business. I can personally attest to the excellent customer service. In my opinion, the onX software performs better on a quality smartphone than it does on a Garmin, but this device is still fantastic and performed well on my Garmin 64st.In either case, I advise every hunter to subscribe to this app. 6/5

As a resident of California, I am all too aware of how challenging it is to locate good BLM hunting land that allows you to hike away from roads and access territory that is not shot-out or over-trodden by "interstate hikers" and "200 yd truck hunters"... calling BLM field offices for information, calling local fire departments for burn permits, and using government websites... Puke... While this product won't acquire you your burn permit for you and won't supply you with all the information a call to a BLM office can, it will make getting a lot of information easier so you can concentrate your efforts on the best region for your forthcoming hunt. The energy required for a three-day search is nearly expended when trying to acquire the information necessary to plan your next expedition. Only the purchase of current maps or calls to field offices will inform you of potentially criminal trespassing charges or even being arrested for poaching! Land ownership changes and Hunt zones are redrawn. With the help of this product, you may avoid doing the majority of the necessary research. You may scan the entire Californian landscape with just two or three mouse clicks and see every BLM property. You can see which of them is closest to the Trail and which parcels are farthest from a ring of private land but still close to the road. And even better, you can use map features to determine how distant the BLM land's center is from the closest road. All of this adds up to four minutes of searching that can turn out a piece of BLM land with water that is only accessible by a four to five mile hike, and a simple call to the neighborhood fire station might earn you a burn permit. This is how I hunt now with my friends. Your results may vary. But it's amazing to be able to pull up your GPS and see the contact information for the person you are about to start pleading with to retrieve your game when you land a shot on an animal (that you can already see will be your coffee table conversation starter with any hunter for the next 30 Years) and you see that conversation starter jump over a cattle fence and tear off into some Farmer's land. This offering includes updates that may be downloaded to your memory chip and put on your GPS, as well as a free full-year subscription to their pay as you go service. I use a Garmin 64st GPS, and it performs flawlessly. The tool kit that they include just elevates this product above the competition, and the maps alone are worth the price of admission!I might even think about paying for their one-time whole US coverage map before I start buying every state map I want to hunt over the next year and a half because I just can't see myself going on another hunt without one of these suckers! You won't be dissatisfied!
Topo maps show the contour lines of the land, which can be helpful in planning a hike. The lines represent changes in elevation, so you can get an idea of how steep the terrain is. The maps also show trails, water features, and other landmarks.
Google Earth Pro is still free, but there are now charges for some of the premium features, such as the ability to print high-resolution images and use the GPS features.
There are a lot of factors to consider when trying to decide whether or not a GPS is worth the investment for hiking. One of the main things to think about is how often you go hiking and how difficult the hikes are that you typically take. If you only hike occasionally and mostly stick to trails that are well-marked, then a GPS probably isn't necessary. However, if you hike frequently or often venture off the beaten path, a GPS can be a lifesaver. Another thing to consider is how comfortable you are using technology. If you are familiar with using GPS devices
Open topography is a type of terrain that is not obstructed by buildings or other man-made objects. It is typically found in rural areas and is often used for recreation, such as hiking and camping. While open topography is not technically free, it is often seen as such because it is not subject to the same rules and regulations as developed land.
Yes, there is a Google maps for hiking. This map can be used to plan your hike and find the best route for you.
