It would probably be simpler to place items on the scale, example, if it were 12x12, but because it's so little, it can require some finesse to balance items on top so the edges don't touch the surface the scale is sitting on and alter the measurement.Because it's a measuring tool, it's a little uncomfortable to store because you don't want to keep anything on top of it or unintentionally push down hard on one edge because doing so will prevent the scale from collecting correct measures. Although I've chosen to leave it alone on a shelf, I'm tempted to place objects on top of it because it's so small and flat. In general, this scale is ideal for your requirements if you:Have a variety of items to weigh; sometimes you need to weigh something that is very light and other times you have something that is slightly heavier.Need a compact, lightweight scale that is easy to handle and doesn't take up much space.

I only purchased it because I frequently receive drawings that are not scaled correctly. Customers would copy drawings to smaller paper, resize to email, or fax them.Rolling the Scale Master over two places with known dimensions, such as a 3' entryway or an 8' ceiling, enters the value, and locks it in to program the custom scales (there are three possible). Now everything on the drawing can be accurately scaled out. You can either use one of the other two custom scales or quickly reprogram the one you're using if you need to reprogramme it for a different page or drawing.When your eyes are too fatigued to read the tiny marks on an antique drafting scale, it is also helpful to use the pre-set scales (1/8, 1/4, 3/16, etc.). Personally, I won't operate my business without it.Now in June 2013, I have already changed the battery once. I've never had a problem with this tool at all! I bought TWO of the same scale since I adore it so much. Here are a few explanations for why I chose this scale over others.1. When making my order, the weight restriction was important. It can support 440 lbs. I purchased a second one for human use even though I will never reach that level because I am aware of how tempting it is for my guests to weigh themselves.2. The elegant overall style. It has a one-piece, premium construction that is incredibly simple to clean. I'm aware that certain scales may favor ridges in their construction to prevent slipping, but I like this style better because dirt won't get caught in the spaces between the ridges.3. I've purchased a number of other shipping scales, but this one is by far the finest. The platform is a good size and accommodates most boxes (oversized boxes are a little trickier but it still works for them). I appreciate that the cord is on the display rather than hidden beneath the box where it can't be seen. Additionally, the fact that you may choose from a variety of weight display settings makes it convenient. In order to save a step in shipping, you can configure it to read 4LBS 4 OZ or have it work it out so it says 4.25lbs. I never had this choice with any of the previous ones. It is also convenient to have a battery-powered alternative to corded devices. I don't have to move heavy boxes onto a counter top, and I can set it out anywhere. Since I've had it for a few months, it appears to be fairly durable and should endure for some time.

These scales are three that I ordered (one for home, one for work desk, one for the shop). On its little rubber feet, one of the three "wobbles," but it doesn't activate the "unstable" alarm. However, compared to the other two scales, it frequently weighed a tenth of a gram more. As expected, the case protects the scale but is not completely "closed," so retain the box as well. Setup is simple, and the batteries are inexpensive. I had to change the default measuring type because I weigh in grams. The final option is grams, but at least the scale remembers what it was configured for. If I had to reset the scale each time I switched it on, I would return it. The reason is that those touch buttons are HORRIBLE on all three scales.With a light touch, one scale quickly turned on. A centered PRESS was necessary for the second. At first, the third one would not turn on at all. It took some time to get it to function, and I was on the verge of giving up when I finally gave it a strong, centered press with the tip of my fingernail. The scale that wobbles and displays a slightly higher weight on all of my tests is this one.On a table with a wood top that appeared to be quite level, I was weighing some samples. No matter where I set the swaying scale on the table, it continues to sway. To continue my test, I adjusted the scales' placements. When I relocated the one that wobbles and displays a greater weight, it continued to wobble but did not display a higher weight. The touch buttons on the scales worked erratically as I tested them. To alter the weight type on any of the three scales, you need to press down firmly (from oz to gm, for example). The scales can sometimes be turned on and off with a light tap, but other times I have to click the button repeatedly.The platform is a good size. My test objects weighed the same whether I put them in the middle or either of the corners, which is a good thing because I weigh a lot of odd forms. However, the instructions state to make sure whatever is being weighed is centered on the platform. Unusual objects (like a silver spoon) must obviously be balanced on the platform, but it's good to know that they don't have to be EXACTLY in the center as the instruction book suggests.These are fine for the price. However, I'm worried about the touch buttons. Push buttons were employed on the scales I had used, and they appear to function more regularly and dependably.
