Wonderful to have in my car camping gear! I normally bring both the big and little so my four-year-old can "help." Having a dead blow mallet (as opposed to a conventional rubber or plastic mallet) is one modest method to reduce danger of injury out there. I've discovered that people can wind up doing stupid things while camping. Without experiencing any backlash, I was able to drive tent pegs into some rather densely packed earth.

I was extremely interested when I first saw Paul Sellers suggesting this mallet. I already have several mallets in my shop—wood, brass, non-marring, you name it. I really didn't need any more. But the quantity of replacement faces, together with the variety of sizes and configurations, intrigued me about this mallet. I chose the model with the hardwood handle and the soft, scratch-resistant grey face on the other side. In addition to the grey and white faces that come with the hammer, I did purchase a few additional replacement faces (yellow and red face). Keep in mind that all the faces are extremely robust and composed of nylon or plastic. The information I discovered on Thorhammers.com for each interchangeable face type and color is as follows:Shore Hardness D 57–61, Hard Nylon, White, Best For both heavy and light assembly operations, all-purpose face.Shore Hardness D 58–62; Brown; Tough Polyurethane; Tough and abrasion-resistant. Steel rule die assembly is excellent for hitting sharp surfaces, such as cutting forms.Shore Hardness A 63-731, Soft PVC, Grey, won't scratch finished surfaces. Ideal for carpentry and assembling flat-pack furniture.Red Medium Hard Plastic with a Shore Hardness of D 45 to 55 is better suited for light hammering operations and precise part assembly.Rockwell Hardness R103 - Yellow - Extra Hard - Extra hard faces for specialized applications, such as fixing copper armatures. The yellow face is incredibly strong, resilient, and nearly indestructible. It is even more resilient than the already incredibly resilient white face, and can knock against metal surfaces without breaking them. When the grey face is too soft, a red face with a "medium" hardness is also an option. Yellow, brown, white, red, and gray are the faces in order of sturdiness from softest to hardest. Both wood handles and nylon/plastic handles are available. Diameters of the faces range from 1 to "sizes increase in 1/4" increments, all the way up to 2 3/4". I selected the 1 1/2 "diameter hammer because it's the right size for driving chisels, which was one of my intended applications for them. A 1 1/2 "Another justification for that size is that a mallet is useful for all-purpose assembly and banging. I also chose the wooden handle since I prefer it to the composite one because I find wooden handles to be more responsive. This decision may have been made because "old habits die hard":-)NOTE: After finishing the article, I found out that the hammer is marketed as weighing 650g, which is equivalent to 23 oz. One thing I discovered while researching Thor hammers is that different handle materials and other things can affect the weight of a hammer of the same size. My hammer, which I bought from Big Red Toolbox in the UK here on Amazon and which weights 20.5 oz, is identical to the one shown in the advertisement. It weighed 24 oz, and I also purchased an identical one from Vaughan (who also sells Thor hammers with the Vaughan logo). I tried to cross-reference the model number with the Thor website, but I know your weights may differ. I returned the Vaughn model since the metal head had some damage. Weight was crucial to my needs. On the metal head of the hammer I bought, it says, "Thorex 712 - 38mm 1 1/2 - Made in England." The attached barcode label also lists the model number "31-712R" and the following information: "Thorex Retail Hammer 1 1/2 lb." But my hammer weighs a total of 20.5 oz, not 1 1/2 pounds, which would be equivalent to 24 oz. Once more, cross-reference and confirm what you might be obtaining with the Thorex website. The title of this advertisement may be inaccurate for the specific hammer you receive because one source disagreed with it; the Thorex website stated 1 1/4 pounds, not 1 1/2. These hammers have appeared in identical 1 1/2 "sizes weighing more than 26 ounces and others weighing less than 20 ounces END NOTE:::Note Additionally, I have two square-faced Dogyu mallets and one round-faced Daruma in sizes 13oz and 15oz. I have both Japanese and Western chisels, and I've always used the metal hammers for my Japanese chisels and the wood or composite faces for my Western chisels. Due to the non-marring faces, the Thor is the only hammer or mallet that can drive ALL of my chisels; also, the yellow or white faces are hard enough for my Japanese chisels. The Thor hammer's white and yellow faces transfer most of the force into the chisel's tip, with relatively little force being lost in the face of the mallet, in contrast to soft faced hammers that typically absorb too much shock from Japanese chisels. The Thor hammer provides me a choice when I don't want to smash my Japanese chisels with the steel faces, which is important because there are times when it's preferable to forgo the louder steel hammering, particularly during prolonged sessions. The Thor hammer with the white face works perfectly with Western chisels as well, preventing damage to or crushing of the wooden, non-hooped chisel handle. The only mallet I feel comfortable using on ALL of my chisel types is the Estwing dual facing (yellow, red) mallet that I own. Due to its balance and feel, the Thor is my preferred choice over the Estwing. But the Thor hammer's versatility goes much beyond just driving chisels; I also use it for disassembly and demolition, case and carcass assembly, joint and tenon coaxing, and so on. This hammer's replaceable faces allow for a wide range of applications, from caressing soft wood or plastic surfaces to bashing on metal surfaces with the yellow face. Additionally, the 20 ounce weight of this mallet is a wonderful compromise because it offers enough weight and strength for harder surfaces while remaining light enough for chisel taps that demand more precision. In conclusion, as you can tell from the lengthy review above, I truly like the Thor hammer and how it has operated in the store. It actually has a permanent home on my bench, and I hardly ever put it away. It is used in many different circumstances because to the simple interchangeable faces. I still use my larger soft faced hammers when necessary, along with my dead blows and steel Japanese mallets, but little Thor hammer is getting the most use in my shop.If having a multipurpose, replaceable face hammer that is well made and will last for a long time appeals to you, this product is highly recommended!Gratitude for reading!

The 4 lb hammer was barely contained in the box yet was delivered on schedule. The Dead Blow Hammer has held up after several days of pounding on thick landscape stone. The stone has a rough surface, so I'm using a piece of wood as a cushion between the hammer and the stone because I like to take good care of my new instruments. As of right now, the hammer is functioning and holding up, and I am happy with it.

These dead blow hammers, which I bought on a friend's advice, are very cool if you know how to use them. A fine tool will be rapidly destroyed if it is used to sail on a piece of steel or rock. However, this is the perfect sort and size if you need to crouch over something substantial, such a piece of furniture, a small landscape fountain, or a stubborn piece of floor equipment. For those who are not familiar, a dead blow is when you can strike a decent flat area (or make one with a piece of wood) without receiving a very taxing rebound. It feels a little strange the first few times! Very helpful. There's nothing wrong with this one; just save the fifth star for the one you really want.

Deadblow hammers have had careers begin and end on the same day. I think some people just can't manage the pressures put on them. The primary issue they run into is the steel internal components piercing the plastic overmold. In a difficult application where they are used to changing them every few months, I've known individuals who have been wearing these for a year or longer. They concur that the quality, fit, finish, and hand-feel of "budget-minded" deadblow hammers (or "budget" tools in general) are all subpar, not to mention their durability. However, I believe TEKTON has its feces together because every item I've purchased bearing the TEKTON name has been of the highest caliber and adhered to Blue Collar Budget principles. Furthermore, three excellent hammers for only $28 won't break the bank. despite the fact that you DO need to replace them a few times every year!

This lightweight hammer only cost around 10 dollars. This tool looked just ideal for me because I am a homeowner who occasionally needs a soft headed hammer, I needed something adaptable, and I did not want to spend too much money. It is more of a tapping hammer than a hammering hammer due to its small size and light weight. The handle appears to be made of a sturdy hardwood, maybe hickory, and is tightly affixed to the metal top. The heads come in a variety of materials—one is copper, another is brass, one is rubber, and two are plastic—one is red and the other is white.Simply unscrew the existing head and screw on the new one to swap heads. It takes fifty seconds (or less). So, if you're looking for a hammer for the same purpose as I was, I'd suggest this one. However, a multi-purpose tool like this one is probably not the greatest option if you plan on using it frequently.
