I've always considered Makita to be the go-to drill for anyone working in the building and woodworking industries! About 23 years ago, I bought one for myself; it was a battery-operated model like the ones I used at the cabinet shops where I worked. Here in San Diego, I accidently dropped it on the ground on the corner of our home. When I came back, it had abruptly vanished. Of course I knew where it went, but who is to say if I didn't catch the thief in the act? This neighbor, who had just been released from prison, even remarked on how nice I looked while moving around in my short-shorts!Nevertheless, I had become dependent on Makita, so I purchased this hammer drill with a purported "variable speed." Almost as soon as I got it, I disliked it! How did I get to be so dim? However, I used this drill for about 20 years before the trigger switch literally went out its wad! The only way I could get it to work at all was to carefully wrap a zip-tie around it and shimmy it up every time I used it since it completely undone and popped off. However, as they say, "Leave the dead dog to lie!" I eventually let go! This beast is still lying on the floor of my garage, collecting dust.This drill is indeed heavy! My hands may serve as unpleasant reminders of the rigors my carpentry and gardening endeavors have put them through as I get older. However, this is a powerful weapon that may be used by anyone who is determined to take on even the most difficult tasks! Let me preface this by saying that I am not and have never been a very handy person. My dad wasn't around a lot, so I never saw much interest in wood, concrete, nails, saws, or drills. Let me begin by stating that I will only be rating and reviewing the product in question (this drill). With this drill, Makita appears to remain true to their reputation for excellence. It's approximately an inch smaller than my XPH06 and VERY tiny. It is well balanced in the palm and feels extremely substantial while switching between settings. The speed shift can be a little challenging to activate, but it's not too bad, and the solid switch will stop accidental activation. The hammer function is satisfying, and the chuck is an improvement over the previous model. Along with the hammer action when in drill mode, the XPH06's annoying slop in the chuck has disappeared. Although I haven't actually tested it yet, so far so good.I just have a problem with the seller. The drill was taken out of the box and dropped delivered via USPS in a bubble pack with no further padding in order to reduce shipping expenses. The worst shipping and packing I've ever had from Amazon. The back of the battery receptor had a piece of the drill casing that was out of place when it was delivered, as if it had been dropped. Not good enough and incredibly disappointed. If this is how the seller ships their goods, I won't do business with them once more.

Anyone who plans to drill more than a few holes should wear ear protection, in my opinion.Another item to consider is how little heat is produced when operating the drill continuously. I anticipated a poor build quality suitable for light-duty masonry drilling given the pricing. But I received a welcome surprise. When I expected plastic, the depth gauge and gearbox cover were both made of metal. An unexpected organizing feature is an inbuilt chuck keeper on the drill cord. In order to hold the handle in the position chosen by the user, the handle now has raised plastic squares that slide into metal slots on the drill. With a soft portion mating with such a rigid channel, this interface is obviously an area to watch for failure in the future. But I still anticipate that the handle will be helpful for a very long time. It undoubtedly outperforms a handle mount that relies exclusively on friction. Additionally, altering the position is simple because the handle screws together without the use of a tool.The top switch alternates between hammer and conventional drilling. However, there are better solutions if all you need is a powerful drill without the hammer motion (for drilling masonry). I have no hesitation in recommending it for light- and medium-duty uses. If a hammer drill was required for my job, I would look for a different, more powerful one.

Concrete was easily drilled through thanks to the powerful motor. After numerous holes were drilled into the floor of my basement, I haven't had any issues with it. If you buy this sucker to screw drywall screws into wood, be prepared to fail at that. It's a powerful sucker. For most people to use simple activities, this is simply too much practice. Over the years, I've had the chance to use a lot of drills, but this is by far my favorite. It was a no-brainer to purchase this on Amazon because when you order the 520K model, you also get the case. The cost of this drill was the same as the neighborhood box store, but a case wasn't offered. You can acquire this for less money on Amazon if you wait for a DeWalt special offer than you can in the neighborhood box store. I anticipate owning and utilizing this drill for many years to come.

To replace the model 2606-20, I purchased the Milwaukee M18 cordless 1/2" drill/driver and hammer drill/driver (Model 2607-20). I haven't used this current model enough to evaluate its power, but it is a little bit lighter and smaller than its predecessor. What I do know—and as other reviews have complained—is that the drill stops with such power that the bits fall out of the chuck. As a professional handyman, I cannot afford to continually retighten the chuck because this is really unpleasant. Although the chuck on my previous drill was challenging to tighten, bits rarely came loose. Additionally, you could hear multiple ratchet-like clicks when you tightened the chuck on the previous drill. You might receive one or two clicks with this more recent model before the chuck can no longer be tightened any further. I am dedicated to the Milwaukee brand and its dependability because I possess a number of other M18 Milwaukee tools (impact driver, circular saw, jig saw, angle grinder, and reciprocating saw, as well as a Milwaukee radio). I was thinking about returning this to Amazon, but I'm scared that all newer models of Milwaukee M18 cordless drills will have the same design issues in the chuck and rapid stop transmission.Update: I've discovered that the bits won't loosen if you progressively reduce the speed until it stops when your hole is finished.
