Best Ice Makers in 2020

FirstBuild OPLSDTNK01 Opal Side Tank Review:

I don’t do a lot of reviews, but with the amount of investment and how in depth we researched this product before buying, I wanted to put in my 2 cents to help others in their decision. First off, very happy with this purchase. We just bought a new fridge and it makes little to no ice so we needed a solution, presenting Opal. We have had her only a couple of days but she makes ice like a champ. We let her run 24 hours a days and she makes great ice. I was concerned about the ice being too soft but it’s not, even with the holding container not being refrigerated it works fantastically. We have stored up some extra bags of ice for when we have company. When we empty the tank I am amazed at how quickly Opal refills it. I was concerned about water when you pull the holding container out and yes there is water but we are just mindful of that as we take the container out to empty into bags. I love the way my water stays cold in my yeti cup without my ice turning to a block. The Opal ice keeps a nice constant consistency as it naturally melts. I could go on and on about this product but the take away is, if you are looking for a personal ice maker this is the one for you! Notice we purchased the side tank for our Opal
and I think that adds to the ease of use and enjoyment for this product.

Fluidmaster 12IM72 Ice Maker Connector, Braided Stainless Steel - 1/4 Compression Thread x 1/4 Compression Thread, 6 Ft. (72-Inch) Length Review:

This connector is easy to install and it seems high quality. I'm very happy with it, hence the five star rating. However, I want talk about my experience regarding two issues that several other reviewers have complained about.

First, you have to be careful when you push the refrigerator back against the wall, to make sure you don't kink the hose. I had read the reviews complaining about this before I tried installing it, so I was mindful of the potential issue and there was no problem. I kept the hose pulled to the side so it would make a large C shape when the refrigerator was pushed back against the wall, rather than letting the excess hose bunch up in one spot. If you take a similar precaution to keep the hose from bunching, I suspect you'll have no problem.

Second, some of the other reviewers have complained about the taste of the ice from this hose. I've gotten bad tasting ice from refrigerators plenty of times, but the ice from this tastes fine. I tossed out the first couple batches of ice to make sure the line was flushed, after reading the negative reviews about the taste. I don't know whether flushing the line was necessary, as I didn't taste any of the ice from the discarded batches, but I can say that by batch three, the ice was great.

At this point, the only question left is durability. If I ruptures and floods my house I'll come back and update the review. Until then, it's five stars.

Essential Values Ice Machine Cleaner, (16 fl oz) Nickel Safe Descaler | Ice Maker Cleaner, Universal Application for Affresh/Whirlpool 4396808, Manitowac, Ice-O-Matic, Scotsman, Follett Ice Makers Review:

Very Impressed with this product.

I have used other products in the past, and thought that my Manitowoc was just getting old and not making FULL ICE CUBES like it did when it was new!

Then I purchased this product from (Essential Values Ice Maker Cleaner) and WOW my Manitowoc ice maker is making FULL ICE CUBES again like when it was new after just one cleaning cycle...

I will be buying again and keeping some on hand for my next cleanings, nothing worse then ice reduction in size.

I would recommend this to anyone who's ice maker needs a good cleaning.

Ice Machine Cleaner 16 fl oz (3 Pack), Nickel Safe Descaler | Scale Remover, Universal Application for Whirlpool 4396808, Manitowac, Ice-O-Matic, Scotsman, Follett Ice Makers by Essential Values Review:

This products works much better than the original KitchenAid cleaner we've used before. We are using it on a built-in, under counter ice machine that gets heavy use in our home. I suggest also get a few mall-diameter bottle brushes, to clean the hoses as they tend to get pretty grungy and no cleaner we have tried so far works on that! Clean the hoses first, then run the cleaner. You may want to run it through two full clean cycles based on the amount of use your machine gets.

IKICH Portable Ice Maker Machine for Countertop, Ice Cubes Ready in 6 Mins, Make 26 lbs Ice in 24 Hrs with LED Display Perfect for Parties Mixed Drinks, Electric Ice Maker 2L with Ice Scoop and Basket Review:

UPDATE: I am raising my rating from 4 to 5 stars after a few days with this.

One aspect of the design that had implications that were not obvious at first is the fact that the water reservoir catches water as the ice in the basket melts. This turns out to be important.

It means you can fill the reservoir with water (about 2 liters) and just leave it running.

After the basket fills up, it shuts off. If you use some of the ice, it runs some more. BUT... If you just leave it alone, the ice melts enough to lower the level and trigger ice making again. Until it is full again.

In practice, this means you can just leave it running, even overnight, and come back to a basket full of ice.

Obviously, as you USE ice, eventually there is not enough water to make a full basket but that just means it keeps cycling with what water it has. Once you add water, it goes back to keeping the basket full. The amount of water held by the reservoir seems to be good for 3 to 4 baskets of ice - maybe more. You don't have to fill it that often.

If you do want to turn it off, the ice all eventually melts. But, the water is in the reservoir and ready to turn into ice again when you want.

The only minor gotchas are:

(1) The low water red led looks just like the basket full one and I didn't realize at first that it was the one that was showing when I first needed to add water

(2) Sometimes the ice piles up near the back and causes it to think the basket is full when there is still room. You just don't have quite as much ice made when that happens. When you brush the ice forward it takes off making more ice.

This is FAR more usable than I expected for such a low price.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I got this because it was about the least expensive of these countertop ice makers that got mostly good reviews.
At $127.99 total, I figured it was worth a shot.

It's nicer than I expected and as said in the headline, the very first batch of ice came out in 16 minutes with a second one in less than 8 minutes.

These are the Large "bullets", which are not very large but good enough. The picture with the glass is just the ice from the first run.

I put water from our reverse osmosis filter in there and the ice is very clear.

I did NOT let this sit an hour because I didn't see that at first. But it was sitting upright for at least 15 minutes before I plugged it in.

Vremi Countertop Ice Maker - Ice Cubes Ready in 9 Minutes - Makes 26 Pounds Ice in 24 hrs - Perfect for Water Bottles, Mixed Drinks - Portable Stainless Steel Ice Maker with Ice Scoop and Basket Review:

So I really like this portable ice maker! After reading the instructions, the process started. Had to leaving it sitting in the correct position for 2 hours for the refrigerant to settle, but I got to making ice in a jiffy. Add water to the reservoir and hit the on button, that simple! I did have a couple problems with the first batch of ice. I thought I had made sure that the stopper on the bottom of the machine, to let out excess water when not being used, was pushed all the way in but it was not. Water got everywhere!! But that was user error, it did not happening again after that. The other problem I had was a piece of ice kept getting stuck causing the machine to think the ice bin was full, but that was an simple fix. All in all, fantastic little machine! Perfect if you need ice at an outdoor event. The little bullets of ice are the perfect size for water bottles too! Great product along with all the other things I have purchased through Vremi.

hOmeLabs Portable Ice Maker Machine for Countertop - Makes 26 lbs of Ice per 24 hours - Ice Cubes ready in 8 Minutes - Electric Ice Making Machine with Ice Scoop and 1.5 lb Ice Storage - Metallic Gray Review:

We live in an area with a well and septic system so our water is terrible. We are not able to make it inside our fridge/freezer door like most. This compact little machine is awesome. It sits out on my counter but can easily be put away in a cabinet. Since we use this machine daily, out it stays. It takes about 8 minutes to make 9 ice cubes. There is an option for large or small cubes, I only make large, small ones take even less time. It will keep making ice until the water reservoir is empty or the storage basket is full. I make it dump inside a gallon ziplock bag for the family to use. For parties I start at least an hour or two and can fill several ice buckets and be ready for cold drinks. It comes with a little scooper. I am very happy with this purchase.

Euhomy Countertop Ice Maker Machine, Makes 26 lbs Ice in 24 hrs-Ice Cubes Ready in 9 Mins, Compact&Lightweight Ice Maker with Ice Scoop and Basket. (Silver) Review:

This icemaker was packaged very nicely. Everything was wrapped and taped up, but it was still easy to unpack and to remove the tape. My biggest pet peeve is when it takes an hour to unwrap something 🙂

The icemaker itself feels very sturdy and was the perfect size for my limited countertop space. It is solid, but not overly heavy. It takes up about the same amount of space as my Kitchenaid mixer, just as a more solid rectangular shape. The entire unit is stainless steel minus the lid, which is a solid black and see through black color. The fan portion puts out a good bit of air, so make sure you have plenty of space on that right side to vent. I thought it might look too cumbersome overall at first, but it really didn’t take up as much space as I’d feared. And it matches my appliances very nicely. The cord is a really nice length too. I was surprised how much length you got.

The front panel has notification lights for adding water, ice full, small ice size, large ice size, and also has a select button and the power button. It also comes with the removable ice basket and scoop. It is crazy simple to use. Just pour water in the tank, select the size and turn it on!

Once you turn on the icemaker, it began filling within seconds. It took less than 5 minutes for the first small batch of ice to be done. You’ll need a bit of time to get a full batch. The basket holds enough to fill a couple cups full of ice, but the machine runs continuously if left on until it runs out of water. It’s definitely great for 2-3 people, especially if you have a small kitchen or space. I’m one of those people who has to have ice with their drinks, and this is perfect since we have well water and can’t use the fridge icemaker. Using filtered water, the ice comes out crystal clear and in a hollow shape.

Frigidaire EFIC206-SILVER Ice Maker, 26 lb per day, See Through Lid, Silver Review:

Looking over the mixed reviews, I debated buying this. Ultimately deciding to give it a try. I was not disappointed. This machine makes ice. It is not a refrigerator. It was purchased for our vacation home, where we are always running out of ice or have to buy ginormous 20lb bags that take up a lot of freezer space. This machine solves that problem. I ran it 24 hour straight to see if it can actually produce 26 lbs of ice. It dis without a hitch. But of course I had to refill it with water several times. It is important that after moving or tilting the unit, it must sit inoperable for two hours to let the refrigerant settle. My guess is some of the complaints are connected to impatient buyers who did not read the manual or observe that rule. This is a good choice for skipping the run to the grocery store for a bag of ice. Works great, runs quiet. It is about the size of a toaster so understanding it's limitations are important.

Opal Countertop Nugget Ice Maker Review:

Delivered on Saturday.....died the next Saturday. I use RO water that is reminerized with Aptera filter(also sold on Amazon).
I drained and refilled every day. This morning, the button wouldn't start the machine...although I could toggle the clean/ice switch to make the
front button turn solid blue color. Then it would shift the color to some multi-color then to solid green. None of these colors correspond to info for the consumer. It was working flawlessly until this morning. It even linked up to bluetooth showing the machine was at 'idle'. Attempts to 'Make Ice' were unsuccessful. I'm sad bc the ice is excellent.
I requested a return and was honored a return label immediately from Amazon. The automated response asked if I wanted a new machine, an Amazon refund or money back to the credit card. I have opted to have the new machine sent with the hope it will last. I wonder if I will get an First-Build-company intervention concerning the new machine being swapped. Amazon gives 30 days to return the broken/defective machine(in which I would use the packaging from the new unit), but I expect there will be an email explaining ‘1B is trying to fix it before shipping the new machine’. More on the process at it unfolds.....
Update:
Amazon sent another and it arrived on Tuesday. The shipping box looks good, the the machine has a big dent. The inside also shows signs of use, which suggests this isn’t a new machine but a refurbished. I have requested a return, which is a hassle bc I recycled my first box.
I guess there is a reason the Scotsman nugget ice maker is $5k.
Update Aug 5th....after almost two months, the bent-beast is working like a charm. To be honest, it is impossible to see the dent. The unit is definitely loud, but worth the hassle as the ice is excellent. We take our ice to get togethers at other houses and dole out the ice rations like we are on a desert island!
