If you are a beginner, or even an experienced player, a string winder can be a very useful tool. They help to take the tension off of the strings so you can easily remove them without damaging the instrument. They also help to keep the strings from tangling and make it easier to put them back on.
If you have the patience, you can string a guitar without a winder. You'll need to thread the string through the bridge and tuning peg holes, and then wrap it around the tuning peg a few times. Once the string is tight, you can cut off the excess and tie a knot.

I've tried at least six different versions of these screwdriver-chuck peg winders from as many different manufacturers over the past fifteen years because I'm a professional guitar mechanic and shop manager. This is without a doubt the best one.I've never seen a peg-winder made of this softer plastic; typically, they are made of a harder plastic, which is where it stands head-and-shoulders above the competition. As a result, your tuning machines won't be damaged or scratched by this peg-winder. This is the ONLY peg-winder I've ever seen that can be used to tune up a set of satin black tuning machines without leaving small traces on the keys even after several months of heavy use (working on about 20 guitars per day, five days a week). Although this is less durable, the normal person would never notice because it is still incredibly durable for any consumer. You might need to replace it every season, half-year, year, etc. depending on your needs if you are a pro who works on hundreds of guitars a week, but I promise that you will enjoy how gently this tool handles your tuning machine keys.Of course, to maintain your machines in fantastic shape, turn down the torque levels when using this in a screwdriver.Update September 18, 2017: After around 4 months of "industrial" use, the peg-winders are still functioning properly. Even though they are starting to show signs of plastic surface wear and are starting to appear a bit filthy on the internal faces, they continue to perform flawlessly and leave tuning machines mark-free. I think they are even more durable than I first thought. Since then, I've made an investment to replace the peg-winder that was previously on every technician's workbench with a newer model that won't occasionally scratch tuning keys.July 2018 update: All of the peg winders are still functional and kind to tuning keys. In the interim, I've also confirmed that they function on cylindrical tuning buttons, notably the optional Industrial SK1 tuning buttons by Hipshot (as long as they don't have an absurdly tiny diameter).Update March 2019: This is probably the last time I'll update this review. Short version: I still believe that these peg winders are the best. In the nearly two years that my crew has been using them, I have only had to replace one peg winder, and that winder was still in good working order when it was retired (it was LOOKING rather raggedy, but it still worked and didn't leave marks on tuning machines; It was swapped out purely for the sake of professionalism). These are fantastic products! I haven't yet gotten one that is flawed. I haven't yet experienced a break on myself or a crew member. You definitely get what you pay for in this instance. Although the cutter functions well, it can be a little challenging to position it such that the opening lines up for the string. It's a bit stiff as well. Two sizes are available for the portion into which the tuning peg is inserted, which is a wonderful idea but somewhat troublesome in practice. Pin puller not yet utilized. However, it does the job.

I've had it for more than a year, but I just used it on a Supro Belmont's tuning pegs that I upgraded and modified with Kluson Butterfly Tuners. It became "messy," for lack of a better phrase, to mean that it became difficult to deal with since it kept coming off the tuner when turning the crank. I don't remember the cost, but even with a variety of different tuning peg types, I regret not spending a little bit extra money for the battery-operated drill type winders.It's "slightly" better than the most basic, extremely cheap [to emphasize CHEAP] garden variety sorts that are included in something like a "Starter's Kit," but I already have one of those that, in my opinion, is just as excellent as this one.One advantage is that you may tighten the loose screws on the tuning machine heads on the guitar itself by turning the handle downward once the strings have been removed. Believe me. They most likely are loose. Don't force it; simply hand-tighten them until they are snug.

Intermediate classical guitarist here. I used to frequently switch nylon strings, and occasionally I would remove the saddle from my classical guitar to change the action's setup. It takes a lot of winding and unwinding to replace the nylon strings, and doing it by hand is very tiresome.I believe that all purchase of a classical guitar should come with this small but superb accessory. I had seen these tools being endorsed by several YouTubers. I don't change my ukulele strings nearly as frequently as I should, in part because it was so difficult. I decided to go ahead and make it easier on myself since my strings were no longer able to keep tune and were in risk of breaking. For changing the strings on my Kala concert travel ukulele, this was a HUGE benefit. Although some reviews highlighted issues with the metal strings—which I don't play—the snips worked perfectly with the Nylguts I was wearing (again). These are now permanently residing in my backpack. If these ever genuinely stop working for me, I'm sure I'll be changing my strings much more frequently than I should be, and I'll absolutely acquire another pair.

It's useful and less snarly than it seems. It's convenient to have a tool that doubles as a cutter and winder for storage. I've only ever used it to clip classical strings thus far (nylon). I'm hoping it will also cut medium steel strings; if not, I'll come back and lower the rating.The tuning key gripper socket's ability to accommodate both regular and small-sized tuning keys is a wonderful feature.
