It wasn't until I bought one that I realized how much I needed it. It practically requires no work at all to make egg salad and to add sliced eggs to salads. It's big enough for me to "double cut" eggs, which involves cutting them lengthwise once, turning them over, and then cutting them again. Since I've owned it for a while and have mastered the rapid cut, I haven't broken a single wire.I haven't tried mushrooms or anything else, but I can cut things with a knife well enough that it's usually not worthwhile. It saves time and works better to mash eggs than a fork. However, the plastic handle bends when compressed (how long will it survive? ), some egg white is wasted (unless you work really hard for the last bits, contradicting the time savings), and the top two grids are small enough that it is simple to leave some egg white in them (yuk). Why was I so hesitant to buy this egg cutter when it does indeed slice eggs? I had my old egg slicer for 25 years. It was compact, reliable, did the job, and fit in my drawer in the ideal little nook. It ultimately shattered when I dropped it a few weeks ago. Boiled eggs are a standard in our home because we have salads frequently. A longer, larger slicer that would take up more space in my packed kitchen drawer made me hesitate to buy one. Yes, I was unwilling to change because of my kitchen's patterns and traditions—even over a straightforward egg slicer! This small creature, nevertheless, caught me off guard. It can hold huge eggs yet is narrower than it appears to be. Additionally, the slicer part has two indentions that enable you to rotate the egg and slice at two different angles, which was not a feature of my previous slicer. It startled me as well because I had no idea I would require the wedge slicer. You see, I like to vary the goodies I give to my dogs, and they adore cooked eggs. I can now cut an egg into six wedges, which will serve as treats to promote good behavior. I feel better about giving my dogs healthy egg wedges rather than packaged treats. A word of caution: even though the wires are thinner than those on my previous slicer, the egg is nevertheless cut more precisely and cleanly as a result. On the down side, I do not suggest using this slicer to chop mushrooms or cucumbers.

As expected, this egg slicer performs as intended. It's actually not designed for anything denser than a hard-boiled egg, in my opinion. The wires on the one I had for two years didn't break until I tried to cut a strawberry. Just a small amount of caution is required when closing it to prevent the wires from shifting slightly to one side. This thing isn't intended to last a lifetime, in my opinion. You need to replace it every few years. Heavy duty metal ones I've tried only squish the egg.
If you want to cut an egg cleanly, you need to use a sharp knife. First, make a small cut in the top of the egg. Then, holding the egg in one hand, use the knife to slowly cut around the edge of the egg. Once you have cut all the way around the egg, you can then gently pull the two halves of the egg apart.
To slice an egg without a slicer, first crack the egg open and then use a knife to cut it into thin slices. Be sure to use a sharp knife and make sure the slices are even.
