Last update: December 1, 2022

Can a sleeping bag be too big?

If your sleeping bag is too big, you risk rolling around inside of it and getting cold. You want a snug fit so that your body heat can be trapped inside the bag to keep you warm.

Do sleeping bags really keep you warm?

Sleeping bags are designed to keep you warm in cold weather conditions by trapping your body heat inside the bag. They are typically made from synthetic materials that are good at insulating heat, such as down or synthetic down. Sleeping bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit different body types, and they usually have a temperature rating to help you choose the right one for the conditions you'll be sleeping in.

How cold of a sleeping bag do I need?

When it comes to choosing a sleeping bag, temperature rating is everything. You need to make sure you have a bag that will keep you warm enough for the conditions you plan on using it in. For example, if you're planning on camping in the summer, you won't need a very warm bag. But if you're planning on camping in the winter, you'll need a bag that's rated for colder temperatures. The best way to choose a sleeping bag is to find one that's rated for 10 degrees colder than the coldest temperature you expect to encounter. That

How expensive is a good sleeping bag?

A good sleeping bag can be expensive, but it doesn't have to be. You can find a good sleeping bag for under $100. However, if you want a top-of-the-line sleeping bag, you can expect to pay over $200.

Sleepingo Double Sleeping Bag for Backpacking, Camping, Or Hiking. Queen Size XL! Cold Weather 2 Person Waterproof Sleeping Bag for Adults Or Teens. Truck, Tent, Or Sleeping Pad, Lightweight Review:

For our yearly fall camping trip, I sent my hubby this HEAVENLY Sleepingo sleeping bag. The Grand Canyon South Rim, which is open all winter, is where we went. When it was time for us to set up camp, I decided to surprise him with it and kept it hidden. As we were ready to fortify ourselves, I asked him to bring back a bottle for me that I had purposely "left in the car." I quickly spread our brand-new double sleeping bag on the floor after he left. slid in, then waited. The shock and delight on his face when he returned and realized he would be cuddling with ME in this GIGANTIC, COZY BEAUTY- ALL NIGHT, EVERY NIGHT J J J! I wish I had captured that moment on camera! Haha!Without a doubt, that was the high point of our trip! The bag seemed to be constructed specifically for us! Just vast and expansive (5 feet broad and 7' long), yet comfy and toasty enough to keep us warm! The majority of our journey was in good weather, but our sleeping bag kept us warm even on the coldest evenings. It is rated for 32F Mamamia (even when the temperature plummeted barely below 40 degrees)! Additionally, it is totally waterproof and kept us dry despite the soggy ground (not to mention our Tibetan Terrier's drool-filled attempts at chewing and gnawing, which did not result in even the slightest hint of a hole or fray, and let me tell you that pooch made a complete playground out of it!! = EXCELLENT QUALITY!) Thank God it can be machine washed. It truly emerged smelling and appearing brand new!We liked that it has a double zipper, which lets him breathe when he gets overheated while yet letting me to have it zipped all the way up to my chin. As I read, I was able to fall asleep without having to disturb my husband, and he didn't wake me when he got up to walk Charlie. The compression sack and the bag's 6lb weight are two additional features I adore! A tenth of its actual size can be stored! Of course, I also adore the color—a very organic green that looks positively campy! The ability to convert this into TWO SINGLE sleeping bags is by far its best feature! The fact that we can't afford to argue, according to my husband, at least won't ruin our trip! NOT FUNNY AT ALLFor those of you who detest droning reviews and want to get to the point:If you're seeking for a HUGE, LIGHTWEIGHT, HIGH QUALITY, WATERPROOF, WASHABLE, COMPRESSIBLE, ADORABLE, COZY SLEEPING BAG that'll keep you FREAKIN' WARM ALL NIGHT, then you might consider purchasing one of these.CONGRATS! ;) YOU FOUND IT!Will attempt to update after a few uses.

REVALCAMP Sleeping Bag Indoor & Outdoor Use. Great for Kids, Boys, Girls, Teens & Adults. Ultralight and Compact Bags are Perfect for Hiking, Backpacking & Camping Review:

The promotional blurb for the sleeping bag just didn't convince me. I just intend to use it on my chair and not outside. Due to a variety of medical issues, I sleep in a recliner. I employ a variety of covers (more like coverettes for a chair). The entire night they keep falling off. A tight sack came to mind, but I quickly realized that wouldn't work. We keep the home quite cool at night because it can get chilly at night in the winter (this is an older house built in 1939), and a snug bag wouldn't be able to prevent the wetness. When I first started reading about sleeping bags, the price and their cold weather specifications quickly overwhelmed me. Something like that was not what I wanted. Then I discovered this manufacturer of light weight sleeping bags (not toys for kids), which I believed would be sufficient. I bought it, and I'm quite pleased with the outcome. Simply place it in its bag to store it away because it is lightweight and warm enough for indoor use. Just stuff it in the bag; no rolling or special folding is required. My initial effort When I put about two-thirds of it in the bag, I said, "Those people are crazy; you'll never be able to put this thing in a bag." I managed to do it effortlessly.Thank you for the wonderful, American-made goods!NW

Gold Armour Sleeping Bag for Indoor and Outdoor Use - Great for Kids, Boys, Girls, Teens, Adults. Ultralight and Compact Bags for Sleepover, Backpacking, Camping Review:

I love these, and I bought three of them! Every August, I go camping in New York. The temperature is still warm or hot throughout the day, but it lowers to around 50° at night. The temperature drops because everything seems moist. I wear a hoodie, sweatpants, and socks every year to stay warm, yet I still have difficulties falling asleep because of the cold. We used these sleeping bags this year, and I had such a restful sleep that I never once woke up in the middle of the night! In fact, I was able to sleep in shorts because I was in no way cold. We zipped two sleeping bags together because I prefer to sleep on my stomach and don't particularly enjoy being trapped in a sleeping bag. Which was very simple to do! They provided lots of space for movement while keeping my daughter and I extremely warm when we slept together in them. When you're done using them, they fit neatly back into the bag, and I ADORE the catch-free zipper! They can fit someone who is fairly tall because they are also extremely lengthy. Each bag contains a little tag that identifies the color of the sleeping bag and whether the zipper is on the right or left side. The bag's straps allow for simple carrying or attachment to a backpack if you're going backpacking. The gorgeous, vibrant hues are a plus! I couldn't be happier and would highly suggest them!

TETON Sports Celsius XXL Sleeping Bag; Great for Family Camping; Free Compression Sack Review:

Where can I even begin with this fantastic sleeping bag?I was looking for a new, larger-sized sleeping bag, and after reading reviews, I chose to get the Teton XXL. I bought a Coleman mummy bag for camping two years ago. Although the mummy bag performed an excellent job of keeping me warm, I quickly learned that a smaller mummy bag wasn't the ideal choice for me because I prefer to sleep on my side.I took the backpack on a 3-day camping trip this past weekend. Even though the temperatures only dropped into the 40s at night where we were, it was still chilly enough to make for a horrible night if you don't have a nice sleeping bag. I often had to unzip the side of this Teton XXL bag to let cold air in to chill me down or sleep with my legs out since it kept me so toasty. This bag has more than enough space for you to roll over comfortably at night without twisting it. My wife and I were able to fit side by side (on our sides) in the bag when I first tried it out at home. Although that's not something I'd advise, if you just had one suitcase and were in a desperate situation, it might work. The bag's interior is more like fleece than the exterior, which is composed of a smooth nylon material. When opening the bag for the first time at night, the interior material makes it comfortable. The temperature is manageable and rises swiftly. The provided carrying bag is fantastic. The sleeping bag fits inside with ease, and the side straps let you compress the bag even more to maximize storage space. The photographs I've attached show the bag's measurements.I can't wait to use this bag on our camping vacations later in the year when it will be much colder because I have no complaints about it.Here is a picture of the Coleman mummy bag next to the Teton bag to demonstrate how the two bags compare in size.

SOULOUT Sleeping Bag - 4 Seasons Warm Cold Weather Lightweight, Portable, Waterproof Sleeping Bag with Compression Sack for Adults & Kids - Indoor & Outdoor: Camping, Backpacking Review:

I wouldn't use this sleeping bag on any excursions that required very little packing, but I would use it for the majority of other situations. It's not quite as light as my fancier bag, but it is still quite warm, waterproof, strong, comfortable, etc., and costs a lot less. Why would I abuse my good camping bag? The adaptability is what I really appreciate. This jerk can unzip to become a blanket for car camping on balmy nights. Use the head pocket and completely zip up the garment on chilly evenings. I also like that I can unzip the feet independently to allow for some necessary venting while preserving insulation for more comfort. aids in removing moisture and flatulence. I believe calling this a 3-season bag would be more accurate, but anything can become a 4-season bag if you add enough layers. Would it withstand snow? Yes. Would you feel at ease with it? Unless you are wearing layers, a well-insulated pad, and perhaps some wool blankets for good measure, the answer is probably no. This bag, in my opinion, is perfect for any occasion where you DO NOT want to use your expensive "good" bag, such as vehicle camping, hosting guests, short hikes, etc. Basically, anywhere you don't care about weight or don't want to abuse your fancier equipment for "basic" use. This pack will largely be used for local camping vacations with the family and road trips/mobile camping trips. In the winter, it will be stored in the trunk of my car for emergency use. This bag is not for those of you who are hiking the AT or PCT. For the remaining 99% of us "normies," this bag would be perfect for road trips, unexpected guests, emergency/prepper use, backyard camping, cub scout camping with/for the kids, and any other situation that would call for the use of a sleeping bag.

Coleman Palmetto Sleeping Bag Review:

For an overnight hiking/camping excursion, this bag was purchased. Since I am just 5'5", the sleeping bag has plenty of area for movement. I was rather warm in it even though the temperature throughout the night fell to around 50oF.I adore this sleeping bag, but I wouldn't suggest purchasing it for trekking or backpacking (been there, done that). Simply put, the sleeping bag is too big and difficult to roll or fit back into the cover. However, if you frequently have overnight visitors or simply enjoy sleepovers and don't have to carry the sleeping bag far, it is priceless.

oaskys Camping Sleeping Bag - 3 Season Warm & Cool Weather - Summer, Spring, Fall, Lightweight, Waterproof for Adults & Kids - Camping Gear Equipment, Traveling, and Outdoors Review:

We bought 2 so that my daughter and I could go camping. They are flawless! Lightweight, portable, and quite comfy. You may pull the drawstring to tighten the hood and keep your head toasty. Cleanup is simple to do. Although my 6-year-old and I are petite, I can see how it may be a tight fit for someone with a larger frame, even with lots of length.

WINNER OUTFITTERS Mummy Sleeping Bag with Compression Sack, It's Portable and Lightweight for 3-4 Season Camping, Hiking, Traveling, Backpacking and Outdoor Review:

I purchased this bag to replace my outdated car camping bag in preparation for a backpacking trip later this week. I must admit that when I initially thought about getting go of my old hand-me-down bag with flannel inside, I was a little upset, but that feeling vanished as soon as I opened this item.I purchased the orange one, and at $34, you practically cannot go wrong. After wearing it on the field, I will update with my impressions, however when I tried it on at home, I felt really toasty right away. The head portion of the zipper sinches sufficiently tightly, and it does not appear that it will break easily. It has two bags and is quite lightweight. A larger stuff sack that I'll bring along in case the compression sack fails and a compression one that I wish was tightened down more. Although I have not yet used it, I am blown away by how warm and lightweight it is in comparison to my car camping bag. This seems like a perfect go-to for any backpacking trip (I haven't been on a TRUE winter trip yet, so 3 season packs for me), and dare I say it...this could replace my cherished older bag while vehicle camping as well?

FARLAND Camping Sleeping Bag for Adults Youth Teens Kid with 0 Degree centigrade 20 Degree F Cold Weather Compression Sack Portable 4 Season,Hiking,Waterproof,Traveling, Backpacking and Outdoor Review:

This sleeping bag is excellent for chilly weather. I purchased the square mummy bag.I knew it would be cold when my son and I went camping. The 14° weather still astounded me though. I froze the first night. Since my toes were numb, I wasn't having a happy camper moment. However, I'm the one to blame. It's snug because I'm a bigger person at 5'10" and 260 pounds and it's a mummy bag. Before we went camping, I didn't properly check out the sleeping bag.I had no idea how crucial the drawstring and velcro strap were. lol The sack would unzip to my waist when I moved in my sleep. I would get out of bed, zip it, then do it again.I had a chance to look at it carefully the following day, at which point I understood what I was doing incorrectly. That evening, after zipping the bag, I utilized the drawstring before using the velcro strap. That evening, my feet became too heated, forcing me to remove my socks.I'm really pleased with my purchase, and I'll know where to turn if my other kids require sleeping bags.
