There is no simple answer to this question as it depends on a number of factors. In general, computerized sewing machines offer more features and are easier to use than mechanical models. However, they can also be more expensive. Some people prefer the simplicity of a mechanical machine, while others find the extra features of a computerized machine to be worth the investment. Ultimately, it is up to the individual sewer to decide which type of machine is best for their needs.
A computerized sewing machine can sew for you, but it is not as good as a human sewer. The machine can make mistakes and it is not as good at following patterns.
Assuming you take good care of your sewing machine, it should last you around 15 to 20 years.
A beginner should spend around $100 on a sewing machine. This will allow you to get a machine that is basic but still has all of the features that you need to learn how to sew. As you become more experienced, you can upgrade to a more expensive machine.

Prior to purchasing this, I had never used a sewing machine. I have two children and am 42 years old, so that gives you some context. My wife gave me an odd look when I told her I was intending to buy a sewing machine. To be fair, that might be entirely true, but I don't regret making this purchase.I got this because I detest throwing things away, including clothes that could be hemmed or with holes in the knees that could be patched. The cost of clothing is high, and hand stitching is time-consuming.This computer comes with a fantastic DVD, which I watched once before discarding it. Because you can essentially view the same video on YouTube without having to mess with a remote, I threw it away. Searching for "Brother sewing machine instruction video" and watching it on a tablet next to my machine made things a lot simpler for me.Let me also admit that I was initially somewhat concerned. Bobbins? Describe a bobbin. Feet? Although sewing machines are somewhat complex, the instructional film was excellent. I had no idea *why* I was threading the needle in those particular locations, but after I had, I stitched my first seam! Even while I won't claim it was the cleanest job ever, I managed to hem a pair of jeans in a fully useful way.I was rolling after my second set. Without even watching the video, I changed the thread, complete with a new bobbin. This technology is so easy that a 42-year-old who has never sewn can learn how to use it in just 30 minutes. The materials I sewn held up well and ultimately reached the point where they appeared sharp (which is more a reflection on my lack of skill than any problem with the machine).I am doing nothing difficult here, I am aware of it. Although I don't make my own clothes or use particularly intricate stitches, I believe that this machine will be useful for the vast majority of domestic duties.Although the purple floral pattern on the machine is a pretty obvious indication that it wasn't made for me, I don't believe any guy should be terrified of learning to sew. It's a fantastic skill, and this machine is a perfect place to start.

I need only a simple sewing machine with a respectable selection of stitch options because I sew for a living and primarily use my serger. At Walmart, I purchased a subpar $80 brother, and it was awful. The stitching seemed cheap and lacked force. Given that it was of the same brand and wasn't significantly more expensive, I was extremely dubious about this one, but wow. This sewing machine, which offers a variety of stitch options and several automated conveniences, has to be the greatest value available. It's simple to thread the needle and bobbin! My only criticism is that, especially when using a zigzag stitch, the fastest speed isn't too quick. Overall, I heartily endorse if you're sewing basics!!

adore this product I bought it to use as wedding decor.Positives: It was a lot larger roll than I anticipated and it looks gorgeous. To clear up any misunderstandings, I will merely say that this roll does not contain crystal stones. It is made of indented plastic and shines brightly silver. However, unless you are up close and actively seeking for stones, you really can't notice the difference. The seller packs the item well and ships it quickly. With this roll, a little goes a long way.CONS: If you apply anything, such as hot glue, to the silvery top of this roll and attempt to remove it, the silver will come off with the glue, leaving a black void in that location.

This melts through a stack of two layers of 1000d cordura, two layers of 17337 webbing, and a layer of spacer mesh, which I needed something that could do. Although I accomplished a surprising lot with my Brother CS-6000i, it would suffer in the aforementioned areas. It is easily chopped through by this device. Another benefit is that you can get the stitch on webbing around buckles considerably tighter (closer to the buckle) than I could with the Brother since you can adjust the needle position both to the left and right. Before you undertake something important, give yourself some time to become acclimated to it. Whereas I had the tension with the brother on level 9, this does it on level 3. While the foot pedal is excellent at quickly moving through items, a little touch is required for slower stitching. The fitted 100/16 needle rapidly broke (I was kind of pushing it to the limit and testing what it could do), but so far there have been no issues when I replaced it with a Schmetz 100/16.The only significant drawback that I can identify is that it needs to get going quickly. The minimum threshold for moving the needle is a little too quickly, leaving little room for curves and other irregularities. I anticipate using the hand crank a lot for the more delicate spots. Edit: I've discovered that starting it at a slower speed by softly pressing the pedal and cranking the hand crank to give it some momentum works well.

Weak habits persist. I work from home as a seamstress and exhibit my crafts at least once per month. On my trusty old Singer 247, I was sewing for hours every day until the timing needed to be changed. I was really stubborn about giving up this equipment because I had used it for the previous 20 years. Not that I won't repair my first one, which my grandma gave me for Christmas when I was 11 years old; I most definitely will, and I'll eventually teach my daughter how to stitch on it just like I did. Given that my firm is expanding, I eventually made the decision to upgrade to something a little fancier. Without this machine, I don't know how I managed to sew for so long. It is a two-in-one workhorse. I selected this model since it was described as being "high duty," as I do sew for several hours each day.Although some other reviews mentioned a little noise, it is incredibly silent in comparison to my old tank. I appreciate the clear bobbin window since it allows me to see my thread. The seam allowances are fractionally stamped onto the plate, and the LED light is also extremely good. As you can see, I am used to stitching on an extremely outdated machine, thus all these minor improvements mean a lot to me. Since I was so eager to start working on this, I haven't yet sat down to figure out the automatic threader. The buttonhole option creates stunning buttonholes and is simple to use. I'm eager to investigate the numerous stitch possibilities. The one thing I wish I had done differently was to pay more attention to how the models varied. The extra attachments and feet that came with the 4452 are probably why I would have purchased it, and I currently have the majority of them on my Christmas wish list. I couldn't be happier with this equipment and would suggest it to any sewer seeking for a trustworthy, high-quality unit. My 247 from the future is what I call it. Buy this machine without thinking twice!

beginner sewer. My ultimate goal is to try my hand at making leather luggage.unable to support an industrial device. With a "heavy duty" 110/18 needle and #69 nylon thread, I tested two 10 oz. pieces of vegetable tanned leather, and it worked out okay.Although the thread broke, I believe that was because I lacked a "leather needle."The machine did not bog down or make deathly noises.Instead, I was impressed with how easily it passed through the leather. My 120/19 "leather" needles are finally in, so things should go much better.Using online tutorials and projects for backpacking, BoB, and gear, I am learning how to sew.A few hundred stuff sacks with 1" webing from 6" to 4' including gather pulls were created using 1.1oz ripstop nylon 110/18 "high duty" needle #69 bonded nylon thread.12 compression straps were created. This machine has completed the entire process without experiencing any problems.I'm amazed by such a cheap device, over which many complain online since it's a "singer and they don't make their own stuff."Even if it might not survive, it has already compensated for itself by saving me money over store-bought gear, and I get to customize the sewing.I purchased it from "Amazon Warehouse Deals."My leather sides in 10 oz. chrome/veg/tanned skins have been ordered.I'll update this evaluation once I've had a chance to sew on more heavier leather over a longer period of time.I can heartily recommend this Singer Heavy Duty for those of us beginners looking to make thick webbing, camping, or gear.Oct. 1, 2017 update: still running strong. No problems. Just finished stitching my wife's blue jeans, and it had no trouble going through the belt loop top attache point and the two layers of denim (waist top seam). Approximately 6–8 layers of denim?used a #69 cotton Levi's and gold thread with a 110 denim needle.

I chose to buy this pan even though there weren't many reviews, and I'm glad I did. Breakfast eggs had to be cooked in a consistent circle so that they would fit inside breakfast English muffins. I tried a few different pans, but the wells were too shallow, for instance, to cook an egg sunny side up. Even though this pan was expensive, I had no problems at all cooking a variety of eggs, bacon, pancakes, etc.The non-stick quality is excellent (nothing stuck to the pan). I enjoyed eating eggs, pancakes, and other breakfast foods. Additionally, I divided the ingredients that cooked more slowly into two wells before adding the quicker-cooking ingredients. I'll test the steaming feature later. I have come to the conclusion that you either spend money trying to acquire a cheaper pan or spend a little more and get four pans in one.Pros: Well built, cooks evenly, and the nonstick surface works flawlessly. Cons: I should have bought this pan first instead of spending my money on the other ones. Additionally, extras like rings to make the proper-sized hamburgers for the opening are not offered à la carte.

For a much lower cost, this machine compares favorably to the modern Bernina 550. Singer's touch screen is better because it is not only more clear and colorized than theirs, which isn't. Regarding how the two machines appear, there is no similarity. In person, this purple Singer is simply stunning. With this one, Singer has truly outdone himself in terms of presentation. The images presented here barely do it credit. I almost fainted when I took it out of the package. Although I do regret having a knee lifter on this machine like I do on my Singer 580 embroidery machine, the 9985's excellent quality given its affordable cost provides more than enough solace. It completely outperforms the Bernina 550, which only has 177 stitches, with 960. Of course, stitch quality is important, and the Singer 9985 sews just as well as machines that cost several times as much. As I go through the complete list of ornamental stitches and functions, I haven't come across anything that isn't absolutely flawless. The level of precision you can apply to your ornamental stitches with a machine this cheap is extremely unexpected. The amount of ornamental arrows you obtain per inch may be determined by sewing a sample, and you can program the machine to run a specific number of arrows before stopping, allowing you to accurately pivot and turn or recreate a specific line of stitching or whatever. If you are familiar to using a computer for anything, choosing and modifying decorative stitching is easy and natural. Not every thread can be lengthened or made broader to the same degree, but once you see it on the screen, it is clear what you can and cannot do. With this ability, you actually have far more than the 960 advertised stitches. I advise using good quality polyester sewing thread to match your item in the bobbin and 40-wt rayon or polyester machine embroidery thread on top for the best ornamental stitching. Then, attach the translucent satin stitch foot. Under your project, a tearaway or wash-away stabilizer will make a huge impact. The creative design possibilities are endless when you have these sophisticated editing tools, and the results are perfect because you can edit precisely where each stitch starts and stops. For example, you could stitch a line of left-facing triangles next to a line of right-facing triangles, or run some lines of straight stitches in between for a cuff or something similar. With such a variety of stitches, embroidery can be used to add stunning details to even the most basic of garments. Following embroidered clothing on Pinterest and Instagram gave me the idea to combine multiple rows of decorative stitches with straight stitching along the edges of my garments, repeating the thread colors I used to embroider the motifs on the front, back, and sleeves of my Singer Quantum Futura 580. Built-in stitches didn't seem to add much to fashion sewing for me in the past because they can look pretty sad when used with regular sewing thread, but now that this machine has so many options and there are so many gorgeous threads available for machine embroidery, fashion sewing is exciting in a whole new way.Combining the walking foot with the hand quilting-look stitch delivers a feature often reserved for expensive sewing machines. I wasn't convinced a machine this cheap could make a good quilting stitch, but by following the instructions in the manual and adjusting the tension as needed, the outcome is rather excellent. The manual is not bad at all. I typically read the instruction booklet cover to cover when I get a new sewing machine, trying every stitch, trick, and foot to learn as much as I can and make sure everything is working properly. I have read the full handbook, and it seems that everything I need to know is there, even if I haven't finished the learning process on this machine yet because I'm ready to get to the fun stuff. Though there are many YouTube videos available, it seems strange that the even-feed foot is not mentioned in the quilting part until many pages later. Free-motion quilting and stippling should therefore probably not be tried solely on these instructions. The English version of Singer manuals is always on the left side of the page, whereas the French and Spanish versions are always on the right. If they separated each language into its own part, it would be much more effective for all consumers. The print and illustrations in this manual are quite small due to its compact shape. I'll search the Singer website for the manual so I can read it on a zoom-capable device.Just to clarify, this takes size 15 bobbins, not 15J as the "customers also bought" copy above could suggest, according to the directions. Although the difference is negligible, using the incorrect bobbins will seriously ruin your shuttle race. I chose this machine on the impression that it would utilize 15J bobbins, just like my embroidery machine, which would be quite practical. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and it is somewhat annoying. Use genuine Singer bobbins, not cheap imitations that are not the same size. The other wonderful features I never imagined to have make up for this minor inconvenience for me. Did I mention that it is purple? My Singer 580 embroidery machine pairs perfectly with the Singer 9985. I'm overjoyed that I was able to get such a high-end machine with so many fantastic stitches and functions for such an affordable price, plus free shipping. Although she offered to special order it for me at the full list price, a local dealer of costly brands does not have this machine in stock at her store, and I can guess why. *snort* I wouldn't want this machine next to a similar one that I was attempting to sell for almost $5,000, either. Regards, Amazon!

I have been sewing for more than 20 years, and while I think the machines at the sewing class where I learned to sew were fairly basic, I have largely used my mom's higher-end sewing machines for the majority of that time, especially in the past decade or so. So it was somewhat of a step back for me to come to this machine (my very first machine that is truly MINE), but I tried not to allow my experience with expensive machines taint my opinion of this device. If you have previous sewing machine setup experience, you could definitely open the box, attach the machine to power and the foot pedal (it's a quick and simple setup thanks to the one cord), and start stitching right away. If this is your first machine, I advise reading the attached manual before using it (however, in general, I think you should always read the instructions). The accessory tray compartment of the machine contains a tiny bag of extras that are included with it (that little box at the front of the machine that you remove to access the bobbin compartment). The bobbin box already contains one bobbin and has room for three more bobbins (4 total). A darning plate, two spool pin felts, a needle plate screwdriver, a small lint brush with a mini seam ripper concealed inside the handle, three additional needles (in addition to the one already installed), three total feet (the "all-purpose" foot is already attached, plus there is a buttonhole foot, and a zipper foot), and a darning foot are also included. With plenty of room to spare, all the attachments fit neatly inside the compartment. My first action was to wind a bobbin. On the machine's top, there are illustrations that demonstrate how to thread the bobbin winder from the thread spool. Even though I maintained my foot on the pedal, the bobbin wound swiftly and the winder abruptly stopped winding after it was full. The method of threading the machine is outlined in more diagrams on the top and front of the device, and it is the same as with every other sewing machine I've used. It is missing a needle threader, which would be nice to have but is probably not required. If you have trouble threading the needle, you can still use a hand-held needle threader (like as the CottageCutz CNT1-2-in-1-Needle-Threader, available at Amazon under the ISBN B000YZ462E).sluggish drivers Watch out—the machine moves quickly. I'm used to the speed control on my mother's machines, where you can set a top speed and it won't go above it no matter how hard you press the pedal (or how fast your flooring is made of wood, carpet, or tile). Take it slow; the only way to change the machine's speed is to adjust how much pressure you put on the foot pedal. The lack of speed control is not a "missing feature," as nowhere on the machine's information does it say it has it; rather, it is just something I'm used to from higher-end computers, therefore I'm not taking away any stars for it. If this bothers you, you might want to think about looking at a different device.A button to set the needle so that it stops down or up was another feature from higher-end machines that I observed was missing from this one. Of course, the machine has a knob on the right side that raises and lowers the needle, but sometimes it's helpful to have the needle stop down so you don't have to attempt to timing when you take your foot off the pedal. Again, not deserving of a star reduction since this is a simple device, but something to think about. After all, you can simply turn the knob to move the needle to the desired location if it stops somewhere other than where you need it to be (up, down, or anywhere in between). The lever to raise and lower the presser foot is simple to operate with just one finger, and it can lift the presser foot above the raised "resting" position by a respectable amount. On the left side of the device, there is a thread-cutter. The machine's front right side has a lever that makes backstitching simple. Your stitch selector is the large round dial at the top front of the machine (with the blue S in the center); simply align the stitch you want with the small marking at the top center to start sewing. It comprises the three components of the four-step buttonhole stitch, three lengths of straight stitch, three widths of zigzag, satin stitch, blind hem, and scallop (steps 2
There is a lot of debate between Janome and Brother sewing machine users. Some say that Janome is better because it has a more powerful motor and can sew through multiple layers of fabric more easily. Others prefer Brother because it has more stitch options and is easier to use. Ultimately, it comes down to personal preference. Try both brands out and see which one you prefer.
Yes, Singer is still a good sewing machine. It's easy to find replacement parts for and there are still a lot of people who know how to use and repair them.

There are four types of sewing machines: straight stitch, zigzag, serger, and embroidery. Straight stitch machines are the most basic and are good for straight, simple stitches. Zigzag machines can do more complex stitches and are good for decorative sewing. Serger machines are used to finish the edges of fabric and are good for stretchy or delicate fabrics. Embroidery machines are used to add designs and embellishments to fabric.
