I purchased these to aid in the installation of some hardwood flooring, and I can genuinely say that they are a significant time saver. Without them, I suppose I might have accomplished the same task, but it would have required a little more guesswork, some trial and error, and possibly more errors. These gauges made it much easier to maneuver around door frames and an awkwardly curved kitchen island. Though there were a few occasions in the corner where I thought I would need to use the smaller one, in reality I primarily utilized the larger one (10"). The only piece of advice I can give is to slightly tighten the screws to prevent unintentional movement of the contours on you. I don't know why I never considered including them in my toolkit before; they are so useful.

It has a very strong action right out of the box, making it difficult to profile objects because the metal pins can bend or scrape them. Lubrication was ineffective.The two brass-colored caps with dimples on the ends that keep the entire system together provide the tension. You can change the tension so that the pins glide more readily by CAREFULLY inserting a screwdriver blade under each end cap, both sides, and both ends, and prying up a little at a time. Be careful not to pop the end caps off, or you can end up with a messy re-assembly situation.If the pins get too slack, you may simply tighten them up again by pressing down on the brass cap ends with pliers. But if you just go slowly and deliberately, this won't be an issue. Now that I have this tool, I can profile guitar necks and other delicate or scratch-prone items without worrying as much about breaking them.

Exceptionally well built and holds the profile. I wish the templates were longer; I need something that measures in units greater than 2 inches. Better would be 4 or more. I had to cut 6x24 inch tiles around curved spaces for a fireplace and wood storage rooms as part of my technique. To establish the right lines for the 2 inch throw, several measurements along the curves were necessary. A longer throw would have made measuring faster and remeasuring less necessary.
