Our neighborhood occasionally experiences really high winds. Strong winds were present on the day I installed the windsock. The windsock was in good shape. I really wish there were sturdy windsocks in other colors, like blue, that could withstand severe gusts. The more aesthetically pleasing windsocks are not very strong. Because I have to be around 3 feet away from the spinner to activate the remote, I only awarded it 4 stars.Other than that, it serves my needs well. I've discovered that you must weatherize it before using it outside. The top will lift off if you counterclockwise-rotate it by a half-turn (picture 1). By gently pulling up on the two connectors using needle tip pliers, carefully remove them from the PC board. After removing the three screws, you can take out the motor and PC board. The switch and legs of the infrared receiver can be rusted (picture 4). It should be cleaned, washed with alcohol, and had the connectors and switch taped off using painters tape. Apply clear acrylic spray to the board's two sides. Dry off. Put some oil (Vaseline would do) around the shaft where it exits the housing. Put the motor back in place and tighten the screws. After applying WD40 to the switch, carefully reinstall the PC board. Put the connectors back in place, with the long wire going to the connector near the battery compartment and the small cable connecting to the connector directly beneath the metal board holder. Reattach the top using screws. Put some grease over the switch and motor shaft and clear silicone sealer around the IR receiver on the bottom side (picture 5). This ought to aid in keeping out moisture, which kills the creature. To seal the top and battery compartment, I also used transparent packaging tape. Now mine is working well.
