Can a weight distribution hitch cause sway?

A weight distribution hitch (WDH) helps to distribute the tongue weight of a trailer evenly across the axles of both the tow vehicle and the trailer. This can help to prevent trailer sway, which can be caused by a number of factors, including uneven weight distribution.

Can I flip my hitch upside down?

Can you tow on a weight distribution hitch without the bars?

No, you cannot tow on a weight distribution hitch without the bars. The bars distribute the weight of the trailer and prevent it from becoming unbalanced and tipping over.

Do you need air bags if you have a weight distribution hitch?

EAZ LIFT 48058 1000 lbs Elite Kit, Includes Distribution, Sway Control and 2-5/16" Hitch Ball-1,000 lbs Tongue Weight Capacity (48058-A) Review:

Purchased for a July 4th family road trip across the USA covering 5000 miles. I haul a 6000-pound camper with a 2015 Heartland Silverado utilizing this distribution hitch. Everything was well within specs and there was a margin of 4,000 pounds. Delivery took two days, and the packing was good. You will want a torque wrench with a 240-lb capacity and a sizable pair of half-inch sockets. About an hour was spent on setup and calibration. When you set everything up, make sure the tow vehicle and trailer are on a level, flat surface. This won't function as intended if you don't aim for the straight and level during setup; you'll have to change it till you follow the manufacturer's instructions. I removed the distribution hitch from the truck halfway during our road journey so that I could wash the car and check the hitch. Everything was still secure, well lubricated, and fantastic-looking. A weight distribution hitch comes with a hitch pin, but only. Look attentively at the attached photo; the hitch and locking pin have traveled around 2500 miles. Needless to say, when I saw the state of this pin, I about passed out. After towing various objects for 40 years, this is not my first rodeo, but it is the first time I have ever witnessed this. I think my family and I might have made the news due to a catastrophic collapse if I hadn't checked this pin. For the return drive, I did buy a new CURT pin from the neighborhood autovalue. It has no stains, bending, or compression, and still appears brand new.

Husky 32218 Center Line TS with Spring Bars - 800 lb. to 1,200 lb. Tongue Weight Capacity (2-5/16" Ball) Review:

My 2015 Ford Expedition EL with an HD tow package and a 32-foot, 7,200-pound travel trailer tow easily thanks to the Husky Center line TS. It took me less than an hour to set up, and it perfectly balanced the TV and TT. Then, on my first road trip in Colorado, I kept waiting for the sway that occurs when a semi truck passes you on the I25, but it never materialized. I was able to relax and just drive because it felt just like being passed without the TT behind me. In fact, if it weren't for the TT in my side mirrors, I would not have known it was there. The only issue I had when traveling at 75 MPH was the absurdly low mileage. White-knuckle driving was not an issue for me, and the Expedition's built-in sway control never had to be engaged. I used to tow with a WDH that used chains and bars, and the difference was night and day. The Husky Center line TS is, in my opinion, unsurpassed for the price. If anything changes over time, I'll update this. The husky centerline is still functioning flawlessly after 18 months. I have had gusts blowing to 70 mph, which caused the TV and trailer to collide (still had to reduce speed significantly) I started detaching the bars before backing into my campsite before my most recent 1,100-mile trip because I noticed the hitch was rubbing pretty hard against the head assembly. This seems to have lessened friction. When the road conditions are suitable, it works beautifully and semi trucks seldom waver when passing. They typically maintain a speed of 70.After two and a half years, I had some severe wobble when crossing southern Colorado. When I stopped and looked, I discovered that the head assembly's passenger-side bolt had become so loose that it could move easily and without resistance. I had the necessary tools, so I tightened the bolt and continued my journey without more incident. To avoid the problems I had, make sure the head assembly is torqued appropriately. I have towed with the Husky Centerline for more than 5,000 miles at this point, however I did not appreciate the sway caused by the wind, passing trucks, etc. when the bolt fell free.

This is fantastic! This would look just as fantastic on my 2017 F250 Powerstroke Diesel, if not more so. If you want something cheap, go get something else since this isn't it. This is your hitch if you're looking for quality. It's obvious that someone sat down and thought, "How can I build the best, highest quality, adjustable hitch that's extremely simple to use? they went ahead and carried it out.The value offered by the greater features, materials, and design more than makes up for the additional expense. The tongue weight gauge works flawlessly. gives a precise weight indication; guesswork or estimation is no longer necessary. The craftsmanship and construction quality are excellent. Simple design is what I need—I don't want complicated... I already have too many problems.Additionally, the adjustable hitch and receiver both have perfect matching latches.

EAZ LIFT 48069 1200 lbs Elite Kit, Includes Distribution, Sway Control and 2-5/16" Hitch Ball-1,200 lbs Tongue Weight Capacity (48069) Review:

My trailer was protected from "wagging the dog" by this device. That's a significant gain over using two to three lanes at 70 mph. The sway control friction device's front ball mount detached from the plate it is welded to. It looks that the penetration into the plate was insufficient as a welder. To fix that, there are two options available. One is to make the wire reach out a few millimeters farther and/or raise the amp potential. This won't create the nearly undetectable weld bead that the first product did. The alternative would be to follow the previous instructions while using a mounting plate made of thicker flat stock. In any event, the stupid thing fell apart. I'm currently on the Amazon website to order another plate/ball assembly for it, and the idiotic site's return page just gives me the option to leave a review or "purchase it again." The page with the return options is misplaced in their similarly faulty digital protocol. Nice. If Amazon or the seller reads this, thank you. More sway ball/plates should be sent. Please. Until you arrive, I must travel at a maximum speed of 50 mph. Tell my widow or the people behind me who are trying to travel anything close to the speed limit about it.UPDATE: I entered the product page using a different action button, and it directed me to a page with the manufacturer's phone number. I explained what had happened to the technician, and he has sent another plate/ball welded assembly. Nothing BS, no photo required, no papers to complete—just a simple request for my name and address. SMART. All that bureaucratic red tape costs the company far more than it does to make the component. I am now a lifelong customer for them. All ratings are 5 stars.

Pro Series Reese 49903 Wd Rb 1000# W/Sway Review:

Although I've only driven a few hundred miles on it, it appears to be in good functioning order. When turning and backing up, it looks to be somewhat noisy. I did set up the sway control, which I must remember to take out before backing up. I should add that the price was really reasonable. Of course, the retailer where I purchased my new trailer claimed to have the best available for $700! 214.00 was much more reasonable and did the trick! The packaging had a hole in it, but shipping was quick as well. But there's nothing lacking!

EAZ LIFT Screw-On Sway Control, Right-Mounted Passenger Side (48380) Review:

2013 tow vehicle 2015 Ford Expedition Trailer 35' Long Keystone Outback 7,427 lbs. (9000 lbs. GVWR)I had used a load distribution hitch a few times when towing my vacation camper. The trailer periodically swayed at highway speeds, which was a little unsettling. The sway was very noticeable when tractor trailers passed, and my truck's anti-sway system occasionally engaged to control it.Based on the length of my trailer, I made the decision to include this anti-sway bar in my setup in addition to the 48380 (passenger side unit). Only if the tow vehicle's hitch does not already have accommodations for a sway bar setup is welding necessary, since my load distribution hitch already had places to put each of the sway balls, thus welding was not necessary (If you are installing only one unit, you may want to consider part 48386 - a bolt on adapter that requires no welding). To mount the sway ball plate, it is necessary to drill 6 - 11/32" holes in the trailer's frame. In approximately 15 minutes, I was able to complete this and install the ball plate with the connected hardware (per side). What a difference it made when we traveled 1500 miles in 7 days with the trailer! The only time I experienced anything resembling wobble was when a tractor trailer passed me in the rear. When that happened, the trailer and my vehicle were GENTLY tugged in the direction of the truck that was passing, but it was quite simple to keep control. There is a "creaking" sound when turning rapidly to the right or left in city traffic; however, there is no noise at all when traveling on the highway. Some people have complained that having the sway bars in place makes it impossible to back up. The application is incredibly important in determining this. With both bars placed and fastened (engaged) or loose (disengaged), I had no problems backing up. When maneuvering the trailer into a "jack-knife" position, the instructions specify that there should be no binding or over extension. I checked this before backing up and, once again, had no problems.I STRONGLY advise purchasing this item. It has significantly improved my truck's towing performance and given me greater confidence when towing my trailer.

EAZ LIFT Screw-On Sway Control, Left-Mounted Driver Side (48381) Review:

With our 8329SS, we used the recommended sway bar arrangement for approximately 1600 miles before deciding to double down. Our trailer just needs one sway bar, according to what we were told. The sway bar, it turned out, was not rated to support the entire weight of our trailer after all. We spent less than $80 installing the second sway bar before our most recent 400-mile trip to Paul Wolff Campground in Illinois. We have never had a more enjoyable towing experience than this one. I hope this makes towing less stressful for someone else.

CURT 17063 MV Round Bar Weight Distribution Hitch with Sway Control Black Up to 14,000 lbs, 2-Inch Shank, 2-5/16-Inch Ball Review:

Free delivery is available on this powerful hitch combo! Additionally, the 14,000 lb hitch/weight distribution system met all of my requirements. I tow a Keystone Laredo 39 feet long. This managed it admirably. As anticipated, the friction sway control was effective. This arrangement is obvious if you are an expert RVer. Because the lever action was too far away and the angle of the chain hooks would drive the chain off rather than carry it over, it was a little challenging to connect the chains up and draw the latch up to permit the weight distribution (had to have the hitch JUST BARELY on the ball). However, it's possible that was just how the RV dealer put everything up, and not a problem with the gear. As long as I own this trailer, this setup should be reliable. Excellent craftsmanship, $400 off the dealer-supplied (extra fee) hitch price, and it was just what I needed from Camping World. If you intend to tow a trailer that is already at or close to your tow vehicle's maximum, consider that it will add around 100 pounds to the rear of your truck and reduce your GVWR by the same amount. Very pleased with both the seller and this purchase.
