Best Tongue-and-Groove Pliers in 2020

Channellock 440 Tongue and Groove Pliers | 12-Inch Straight Jaw Groove Joint Plier with Comfort Grips | 2.25-Inch Jaw Capacity | Laser Heat-Treated 90° Teeth| Forged High Carbon Steel | Made in USA Review:

After 5 years' experience with this tool, I can confidently recommend that you buy this tool RIGHT NOW.
This is one of those tools that you'll reach for a LOT.
It grips strongly for yanking and lefty-loosy-ing. It's even durable and heavy enough I've used it as a light hammer. If you're really desperate, you could use a band clamp to make it a ghetto vise-grip. That's another one of those tools you NEED RIGHT NOW, but that's another story altogether...
The grips are comfortable, non-slip, and clean up easily. That's very important for grabbing onto whatever you need with maximum strength.
Speaking of strength, the 12-inch tool was the perfect length for me. I've never wanted a smaller or bigger one. Perfect compromise of portability, fitting in tight spaces, and strength, for me.
Keep the channels clean and lubricated, and the tool slides in and out of them perfectly. The teeth are perfectly situated to grab and go. And the hardened steel is STRONG. It'll tear brass to shreds if you're careless. What an A+ product from a USA company. BUY ONE NOW!

IRWIN VISE-GRIP Locking Pliers, V-Jaw, 10-Inch (2078110) Review:

The Short: Great pliers with an adjustable click-lock system and the sort of gripping power that'll make the Hulk jealous. For most household jobs, look no further.

Look, I'm no handyman. But, every dude needs to have an outlet to feel like a boss in front of their family when they're in need. We just moved into a new place and our bathtub's drain was clogged and, glory hallelujah, the stopper that should've easily twisted off was rusted in place. No matter how much I twisted and tried, it was immovable.

Enter IRWIN.

This bad boy has some serious edge to it (pun intended). The grooves grip so nicely that for a moment I thought there was a secret adhesive embedded in the grooves (clarification: there is no adhesive, these pliers are just that awesome). I had absolutely no problem getting the stopper off. Heck, the job was so easy that I felt compelled to find other things to twist off in the house just to feel accomplished.

Did I mention, the clicking adjustment system is awesome? I've worked with other traditional pliers that take some work to adjust, but IRWIN's clicking system is well worth the money. I'm actually surprised that they don't charge a few more bucks for having something that stands out against its competitors. The click keeps my setting in place and doesn't budge as I'm doing the job.

Point is, if you're in need of great household pliers, these will do more than fine. As I mentioned in the title, there's a reason The Sweethome picked these as their go-to pliers. I don't do industrial jobs so I'm not sure how they'd hold up against larger needs and jobs. But, if I can come out as the hero in my family, you'd be surprised what the IRWIN GrooveLock Pliers can do for yours.

Channellock GS-3 3 Piece Straight Jaw Tongue and Groove Pliers Set - 12-Inch, 9.5-Inch, 6.5-Inch | Groove Joint Pliers | Laser Heat-Treated 90° Teeth| Forged from High Carbon Steel | Patented Reinforcing Edge Minimizes Stress Breakage | Made in USA Review:

In case you've never used these, the "tongue and groove" channellocks are very handy tools. They tackle most jobs that a regular wrench can do, and function well as a pliers. In particular, they are very handy for household plumbing projects, and have all but replaced my need for a standard pipe wrench.

The tongue and groove system allows each pliers to have an adaptable jaw size, tailored to whatever you're working on at the time. This 3-pack is an especially good value, because certain jobs are more easily handled by the various different sizes. Made in the USA.

Channellock 426 6.5-Inch Straight Jaw Tongue and Groove Pliers | Groove Joint Plier with Comfort Grips | 0.87-Inch Jaw Capacity | Laser Heat-Treated 90° Teeth| Forged High Carbon Steel | Made in USA Review:

I was robbed!! Someone stole my tool box.... Jerk. I have slowly been replacing the lost tools as I need them. Amongst the lost , was a trusty, heavy, huge channel lock wrench that my dad gave me... the thing must have been 50 plus years old. and could have doubled as a weapon.

Because I didn't read, I didn't realize how small this new wrench was until I received it.... it is probably a 1/4 the size of what i was expecting. .. But what a happy accident.! I use it all the time. it weighs nothing., but is also tough and solidly made . It is easy to adjust. I actually think the small size is more useful for my lifestyle. (single woman in a condo) However, I have not had a situation that requires a lot of torque. So at some point, I might need to get a bigger weapons grade wrench... but that day has not come yet! This little guy holds it's own and I am glad I ordered the wrong thing.

IRWIN Tools VISE-GRIP Tools GrooveLock Pliers, V-Jaw, 6-inch (4935351) Review:

These are the BEST channel lock pliers I have owned. The Groovelock system makes adjusting the pliers simple and fast and keeps the adjustment from slipping like some conventional channel lock pliers do. The handles are really comfortable. This is a very versatile tool, which I use for tightening electrical couplers and connectors. I have even used the inside part of the jaw as a crimper . The 10-inch tool is a good all around tool to keep in your tool box. I find that the 8-inch tool is even more comfortable and maneuverable and versatile, that goes in my tool bag as well.

CRAFTSMAN Pliers, 8 & 10-Inch, 2-Piece Groove Joint Set (CMHT82547) Review:

You get a set of 2 Craftsman adjustable pliers for the price others charge for 1. Nice quality and I like the versatility with the different size of the pliers. I put the 8" pliers in my wife's car and the 10" pliers are replacing an older pair that I have used around the house for years. My dad has used Craftsman tools as far back as I can remember. He trusted in their quality and so do I so you can't really go wrong here.

Crescent 4-1/2" Mini Tongue and Groove Pliers - RT24CVS Review:

The ones shipped to me were a piece of $#!*, almost totally useless because bad casting. Really bad, I won't elaborate. I've found typical Chinese quality control is ... well, left to the customer. It must of been an off day at the factory. I sent them back.
Bought another pair, and they are fine. Perhaps a little sharp or unpolished on the grooves, but, for $7, fine.

They are great when your fingers aren't strong enough, or when your fingers are too fat. If you're not a mechanic, these may be the only pliers you need. They're certainly a good starter pair. Handy to have in the kitchen drawer.
They are small, but not really 4 1/2 inch. The longest plier, the one with the slot, is 1/16 short of 5 inches. (Is "plier" the singular of "pliers," things that always comes in pairs?) I find that when I use them it's my thumb and first two fingers only, and my third finger is on the long plier to open them.

They are made in China. It's says "Made in China" on the packaging, but don't be concerned. The quality may be hit or miss, but it's getting to be more hits all the time -- and the price is always low.
I'm old enough to have eight pairs of Channellock-type pliers in various sizes. After my experience with these I got them out and looked at their 'quality.' To my surprise, my favorite two and the finest finished where Chinese made. Sometimes they do get it very right. And at a big box store I just ran across 6 inch locking pliers, a whole bin full of them, for only $2 each. They were perfect; it must have been a very good day at the factory.
Best to buy Chinese in a store where you can handle them. Second best is Amazon where, if you get a miss, you have a month to send them back.

Channellock 424 4.5-Inch Straight Jaw Tongue and Groove Pliers | Pocket Size Groove Joint Plier with Comfort Grips | 0.5-Inch Jaw Capacity | 90° Teeth | Forged from High Carbon Steel | Made in USA Review:

I've wanted a set of these Channellock mini pliers since I first saw a pair many years ago in a friend's tool chest. That particular pair was plated and didn't have plastic-dipped handles like those offered today. Mine have been VERY handy to have. The pair I bought are only approx. 4-5/8" long and the jaws can clamp down on something about a half-inch thick. There are all sorts of uses for these pliers. Some small parts that I used to crudely reach in to grasp with slipping needle nose pliers are now effectively grasped tightly with these mini jawed pliers. I also appreciate the fact they were made in the U.S.A., which is no easy feat given our nation's economic situation. I like them!
