A thread gauge is a tool used to measure the pitch, or lead, of a screw thread. The gauge consists of a handle with a series of graduated disks, each of which is marked with the pitch of a screw thread. The disks are mounted on a central shaft so that they can be rotated to line up with the screw thread being measured.
NPT thread gauges are used to measure the pitch diameter and the functional diameter of NPT threads. The pitch diameter is the diameter of an imaginary cylinder that passes through the threads at their pitch line. The functional diameter is the diameter of an imaginary cylinder that just touches the peaks of the threads.

I used it as soon as it arrived because I needed to measure an ottoman foot's bolt diameter and thread pitch in order to buy a swivel stem caster wheel to replace it. I used a gauge to measure the foot stem bolt, bought the casters, and screwed the casters into the ottoman without having to go to the hardware store and waste my time and gas doing it. You never know when you might need something, so why waste time waiting out in the hardware store aisle when you can just spend a few dollars and stick it in your toolbox or drawer? I ought to have bought one of these gauges years ago.

Remember that this is a low-cost gauge and not a luxury device used by professionals. I used this during my welding school to assess my welds in order to get ready for a certification test, and I'll use it again at work. I simply stretched the primary plate slightly and added some drag to it because the pivot was a little loose.In a nutshell, this is ideal if all you need is a cheap gauge that works.

It would have been wonderful if a simple guide had been given because the instructions are a little difficult for folks who aren't too experienced with measuring screws/bolts, taps, and drill bits to grasp. I'm now fixing a convertible whose top was torn off, letting rains flood the interior. I started by replacing all of the rusty bolts with fresh hardware after removing the interior of the automobile.
