Since our huge Italian family regularly gathers at our place for Thanksgiving and maybe Christmas, I bought this carafe in preparation for the forthcoming holiday season. They enjoy coffee a lot! When sweets are served and we are ready for coffee and other hot beverages, this will be quite useful. I struggled between ordering the 1.5L and the 1.9L, and I'm glad I chose the 1.5L in the end. I was happy since it will be much simpler to store and because it was bigger than I anticipated. It is solidly constructed and insulated, so it can hold both hot and cold drinks. I'll probably use it for my renowned chai tea lattes, hot chocolate, and coffee (buy the chai mix from Trader Joe's; it's the finest ever). But I can definitely see this being utilized for iced coffees that are served cold.I haven't tried the heat retention over an extended period of time, but I figured it would provide at least 4-6 hours, which is what I would need because it is so well insulated. I've used a few other carafes, and one feature of this one that I enjoy is that the lid's design makes it easier to open and close tightly without compromising the pouring lever. You can gain some traction without pushing on the lever itself thanks to the minor barriers on either side. I've never seen a carafe like that save for this one. I just replaced an earlier carafe whose pouring mechanism had broken down, maybe as a result of pressing the lever to seal. I am glad to see this feature, therefore. holds the quantity of water I need to heat each day and is very pleasing. I'm content so far.

I only received this yesterday, then. The delivery person severely irritated me by not taking the time to carefully place the box on the ground instead of dumping it (with a loud thud), frightening me (inside my house with the door closed). I had complete faith that this thing would malfunction. I immediately poured hot water into the box after I opened it. Every few hours, I checked the water's temperature. It was quite hot. It was still scorching hot after eight hours. At ten hours, I made the decision to pump out a cup of still-boiling hot water. So, after leaving it for 24 hours, I opened it this morning as I got out of bed. Although not boiling hot, it was extremely hot. I'm shocked and impressed, and I don't take being impressed lightly. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There's a small screw that's been installed sideways. It gives me OCD, but hey, it might very well be the reason why it's holding the heat for that long. It's a good thing that the unit itself doesn't get hot to the touch because that would indicate that heat is escaping from it. The head could be made more robustly. I hope the plastic head will survive a very long time despite appearing to be of lower quality and not being thick enough. I did extensive brand research. This has been with us for almost six months. We purchased it to replace the zojirushi model we had previously, which we had dropped and shattered. Since it was made entirely of metal, we believed it to be more robust.After using it for roughly six months, we're a little underwhelmed. It is more compact, lighter, and simple to operate, which was a nice thing. Although it didn't keep the coffee as hot as our old model, it did for around 4-5 hours. After six months, we have now noticed that the lid is beginning to retain coffee. Coffee runs out of the lid onto the counter when we remove it and hold it slightly off level. We need to hold the lid carefully to avoid making a mess, or else we should do it over the sink. When checking how much coffee is left in the container while driving or even trying to replenish it with coffee from the containers at rest stops, we must exercise caution.It seems like a wonderful carafe to use throughout a dinner and have on the table so that everyone can serve themselves. If you use it all day at home or carry it with you when you travel, it becomes somewhat less desirable. It would still be an excellent carafe if it weren't for the hassle involved in removing the lid for any purpose. I could deal with the cooler coffee.

I read other reviews, watched videos on how to make espresso, and make way too much espresso and went haywire. Anyway, I'd like to address issues cited in previous reviews:- If you are looking for a super smooth espresso with a beer style foam on top, you are an espresso snob and need to upgrade. This is a $50 machine. The spout is wide and you get a little bit of a head but not much.- I have no found that this machine splatters at all. Use cold water guys! and make sure the little espresso holder is in with a tight seal, brush off any extra coffee bits that would prevent a tight seal.- the coffee matters. It has to be a super fine, powdery grind. It has to be tamped down tight. I'm seeing reviews where people don't tamp it down at all, the water will go right through and then you'll just have a super small regular cup of coffee.- The milk steamer: I was frustrated with this because it wasn't lasting very long. I don't know why they don't tell you this but you gotta put in extra water for the steam. I make lattes and need a lot of milk, so I put in a bunch more water and it worked a little too well. If you have any extra water the steam is gonna keep shooting out after you turn the machine off, it automatically releases steam. But it does work! It was super hot and frothy.- It doesn't have an auto shutoff. It's not a coffee maker. It's an espresso maker. It takes all of two minutes, the coffee shoots out real fast, and then you shut it off. That's how some professional espresso makers work.- It has a chemical smell at first. My coffee maker had the same smell for a while, it's not going to hurt you, it's not dangerous. Clean the removable parts before you start and the smell goes away over time. All is well.I think it's great. It does well for a $50 machine. I recommend it.
