Amazing tool! The thread diameters on the Metric and SAE sets were BOTH clearly noted. The inability to remove the separate sizes from the metal cable bothered me when I was conducting online research to determine which brand of thread checker to purchase. In order to prevent any pieces from becoming lost, the notion of keeping all of the sizes together on a cable seems reasonable. However, in the real world, having to flip the entire set of tools on the wire simply to determine the thread size for the bolt I need to purchase for the machine I'm working on is horrible design from an ergonomic standpoint. So… I did this by: I cut the metal cables for BOTH thread checker sets using my Dremel cutting tool. It only took me two seconds to do both cables, and I'm very glad I did. I now keep the various tool sizes, both metric and SAE, in a compact Rubbermaid-style plastic container. The lids of the container have those swinging latching levers that lock them shut, preventing the tools from escaping. I am aware that the tools are no longer "safe" when they are off the cord, but because I am a responsible tool owner, I will choose convenience over having to turn the entire set in order to try one size. I would unquestionably repurchase this item, and I would unquestionably suggest it to a relative or acquaintance. Consider cutting the tools off the cords if you decide to purchase this instrument. What a brilliant tool this is. They're extremely fantastic for cleaning up threads that some clod has pooched or removing paint and dry wall mud from threads, among other things. I've been using these for years while performing sparky work. My only complaint is that, unlike my previous 4 iterations of this tool, the reversible tap bit is currently made in China. Be careful, Klein, because if you "Expand the Brand" by manufacturing in China, it will be the end of the road for many of us who have relied on your exceptionally well-made tools for many years and who would feel completely out of place there. They are not inexpensive, so we don't get them for that reason. We purchase them because they are superior tools created in the USA that withstand regular use without even a whimper.

Based on some of the negative reviews, I assumed that they would be fragile, made of plastic, or of a very pliable metal (I'm only half joking). I took a chance on this one because the majority of the reviews were favorable.My problem: I unscrewed a grease fitting from my lawn mower deck's spindle's top shaft. I smashed the spindle shaft out of it like a dumbass, destroying all the threads in the process. Awesome! These spindles are not constructed from cheap or delicate materials. I also appreciated how many various fittings this had because I'll probably repeat my mistake in the future. In my case, a 3/8 fine (24) hole/nut required its threads repaired.I watched a few YouTube videos because I had never used a tap

I purchased this tap and die set to use with tasks involving the modification of Ikea furniture (which uses metric fasteners). Even though I really just required the M5 0.8 tap, buying the set wasn't much more expensive than simply purchasing one tap.For cutting threads in mild steel, the tap performed flawlessly.There are no instructions included, but it's highly unlikely that will be an issue for you if you're purchasing a tap and die set. Make sure you purchase the appropriate tap drills to work with the metric taps if, like me, you have a shop full of largely SAE tools (or if you only have metric drills in sizes that are multiples of 0.5mm). You are intended to use 4.3mm for the M5 0.8. For my project, I selected a #18 because it was close enough (4.3mm is approximately 0.169291"; #18 is 0.170"). However, not all sizes have an SAE fractional, number, or letter drill size equivalent that is "near enough."

I reviewed the reviews on this site before making my purchase, paying close attention to those that mentioned gouges in several of the machined taps included in this set. Nevertheless, I placed my order for a few reasons. To start, this is no tiny business. It is a part of Apex Tools, which also owns Nicholson Files, Wiss cutting tools, Lufkin Tapes, Crescent Tools, and other products with a history dating back more than a century. All of those tool brands are ones I have at home, and they have provided me with excellent service for 30 to 40 years. So I decided to give this set a try, reasoning that I could always return it (thanks to Amazon's service) if it turned out to be completely unsuitable. In the end, it won't go back...I use Tap and Dies at home and as a pastime, but I can see how a professional who uses them frequently for work may feel differently about what they require. However, for my own use at home, this is a fantastic set, and for what you receive, it's a terrific value. For this price, I was unable to compete with an Irwin/Hansen set with an identical configuration. I've used this set myself, and it meets my needs admirably.Yes, I have those as well. There have been complaints of little gouges in some of the larger Taps. Although the gouges are minor and not on the Taps' cutting edges, they are only on a few of them. The cutting edges are tidy, undamaged, and acute. The very few gouges are on the threaded following surfaces, thus this issue won't prevent the tool from cutting good threads, at least not for me. I did discover that after some of the Taps were machined, I needed to remove some burrs that were just lightly attached. Those burrs were readily removed using a little brass brush or even the "thread gauges" that are included with this kit.Some of the taps I've already used cut really effectively. The included accessories are extremely stunning and functional as well. The Tap Adapters that are included with this set and the way they lock into the T-wrenches particularly appeal to me. The inability to lock the ratchet into position is my only issue with the T-wrenches. By using the selector flip/switch, you can move either forward or backward. If you have tapped tougher metals frequently, you are aware of how frequently you must move forward and backward to remove the burrs you cut. I can do it using the flip-lever, but sometimes it would be simpler if the T-wrench didn't ratchet. But the ratchet is great for cutting soft metal, and I really value being able to rotate the handle without having to alter my grip.Overall, I believe this package to be a success. I am aware that it isn't an Irwin/Hansen set or even one of greater caliber. However, that is acceptable for my purposes, and I anticipate using this set for a very long time. I already own a far more modest, inferior Tap and Die set that I've had for over 30 years. You can get many years' worth of usage out of a lesser-quality Tap and Die set if you take care of your tools, use some technique rather than brute force, utilize cutting fluid, etc.One update (4/23/16): I also bought the V-Tap Guides from Gator Tools, which maintain the tap vertical (especially when starting the threads). The Gator Tools Tap Guide is a well-made and expertly machined product, deserving of a full 5-star rating on its own. Unfortunately, the Big Gator Tools Tap Guide will not accept this specific tap set from GearWrench's smaller taps (the Metric M5 and smaller) and (the Standard #10 and smaller). This is as a result of GearWrench significantly enlarging the barrel (above the cutting part of the Tap). Their smaller Taps cannot pass through the Big Gator Tape Guide due to the configuration of the Tap. I examined these diameters in the Irwin Taps, and it seems that Irwin keeps the barrel diameter at a size that doesn't exceed the diameter of the Tap's cutting part. If you value something like this, it might be worthwhile to weigh Irwin vs. GearWrench. My GearWrench set still makes me happy, and I have several older Taps that work just well with the Big Gator tool. I figured I'd just point it out as a distinction for those thinking about buying this GearWrench set.

Wow! It's all about quality! This tap and die set from IRWIN is superb, and it is a real pleasure to use. I've used it more than I had anticipated and have never had to use a size that wasn't included in the package. The only problem I've encountered so far is that the smaller cleat can't sufficiently hold the smaller taps, and no chucks are provided to manage tight spaces. I had to look for a dimmunitive hand-held ratcheting chuck, which handles the job nicely, to find a solution. This costly package was definitely worth the added expense.

The service repairman told me a few hours earlier that he charged a minimum of $40.00 to simply look at my pressure washer to remove the bolt, which I immediately rejected. I pulled out my tools, and in less than 10 minutes, I had the bolt out! I've read a lot of reviews on a wide variety of products. Many unfavorable reviews, though not all, are simply the result of the user not using the product appropriately, which can lead to tool damage, job halts, or worse, etc. The best course of action is to educate yourself first. I spoke with a neighbor who was complaining about a 1/2 Ton pickup truck she had previously purchased. She had since added a 12,000 camping trailer, and "her complaint" was that the truck wasn't very good and couldn't pull the trailer very well. She was also speaking poorly of the company that made the truck. I simply told her that the truck wasn't built to pull that much weight, that there was nothing wrong with her truck, and that you should proceed.

Despite being constructed in China, the tap handle I received is of extremely good quality. A 1/4" end tap, however, will not fit this tap handle. The tap handle's jaws open to a maximum of 3/8". (see 1st pic). The 3/8 in. tap in the second image fits perfectly, but the nut must first be completely loosened. The third image uses a 1/8" tap. The 3/64" tap is used in the fourth image. These tiny taps are not held in place by the tip of the jaw, but rather lower in the neck, where a second, more delicate pair of jaws do so. This is how almost all tap T handles are made.I saw reviews where people claimed they couldn't hold a 1/8" tap. Yes, it does, but the smaller jaws have to reach farther to grasp the tap.The final image displays a 1/4" tap adjacent to the tap jaws without the nut. As you can see, a 1/4" tap will not fit.So, aside from the incorrect labeling that claims 1/4" fits, it is an excellent tap handle. The original "made in the USA" tap handle, I believe, might have accepted 1/4" taps, but not this replacement China model. Updates should be made to the listing.At first, the nut was difficult to spin by hand since it was so tight, but after some use and a few drops of machine oil, I can now use my fingers to tighten the nut on the small taps.
