Best Tanning Oils & Lotions in 2022

Last update: November 13, 2022

Are tanning oil and tanning lotion the same?

Tanning oils and tanning lotions are both products that can be used to help you tan. However, they are not the same thing. Tanning oils are typically used to help you achieve a darker tan, while tanning lotions are typically used to help you achieve a more even tan.

Do you get darker with tanning oil?

Yes, tanning oil will cause you to darken more quickly. This is because the oil helps to trap in heat, which speeds up the tanning process. The downside to using tanning oil is that it can cause your skin to become more dry and irritated.

Do you put tanning lotion on your face?

It's important to protect your face while tanning, so using a tanning lotion or sunscreen on your face is a must. I always make sure to put on a layer of sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before heading out into the sun. I also like to use a self-tanner on my face to help even out my skin tone and give me a little bit of color.

Do you put tanning oil on before or after sunscreen?

When it comes to applying sunscreen and tanning oil, it is always best to apply sunscreen first. This will help to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Tanning oil can then be applied afterwards to help promote a deeper and longer lasting tan.

Hawaiian Tropic Dark Tanning Oil Original 8 oz Review:

Pleasant odor. But I'm not sure if I'm incredibly old, incredibly confused, or both. I've used two HT oils (this and the spray oil), and none of them smells precisely like the traditional beach scent I was accustomed to as a child. Although this smells more beachy than the spray bottle version (3 stars), I still haven't discovered the exact beachy scent I'm looking for. I use this to hydrate, and I prefer it to conventional lotion because it smells like the beach (think Kramer when Calvin Klein stole his beach cologne idea). To check if an HT lotion (SPF 4) will work for me, I have subscribed to it and saved (used as a verb here). By doing this, you may be sure that I'm serious and not merely lamenting the state of affairs. However, in general, that is a true statement. So go ahead and get it if you want to get a tan. You will shine like the rockstar you are, and it smells SO much nicer than the spray trash.Peace.

St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, 8 Fl Oz Review:

Self-tanners have advanced significantly. Since self-tanners leave streaks, uneven coloring and fading, and a foul scent, I haven't used one in about ten years. I conducted some research and chose to try St Tropez in my quest for a rapid tan before my next vacation. (I have blonde hair, green eyes, and fair skin; I'm German and Irish.) When it arrived, I was pleasantly pleased by the size (much larger than I anticipated). As instructed, I exfoliated and applied lotion. I merely practiced on my legs to see how it would go. I used the application mitt, which is essential! I performed a total of four pumps on each leg, beginning at the shin and working my way down to the knee. I stepped very softly and saw some unevenness, but it's white, not orange. I didn't use enough product since I was worried that it would get on my feet more. Not at all. I included pictures because a review is never reliable without one! I'll add a bit more product the next time to obtain a darker color, but as a first-time user and St. Tropez customer, I'm happy with the results!P.S. I'm not sure what the "smell" is that everyone is referring to; it was pleasant and dissipated quickly after application. Second only to the orange color, old-school self-tanners smelt terrible and were a dead giveaway that you had fake-baked.

Australian Gold DARK TANNING ACCELERATOR Lotion 8.5 oz Review:

Actually, I solely use this to self-tan.I have red hair by nature. Years ago, I would have like to visit a tanning salon, but my fear of developing skin cancer, wrinkles, and freckles have prevented me. I've been looking for the ideal self-tanner and have tried them all, including pricey St. Tropez, Fake Bake, Jergens, and a ton more! The outcomes or any of the colors have not made me pleased. Both the fragrance and the setting time are too long. Who has eight hours to sit around while doused in a pungent lotion? I feel so uneasy and fear streaking, even if I do it while sleeping! I've been moving all night.Actually, I was debating returning to the tanning booths. I just feel more assured. I had an idea as I was looking at lotions because I've always loved AG goods. Could I use this without the bed and still get color if it has bronzers? I gave it a try, and the result is YES!Here is how I work:ensure that all of your skin is clean2. Use on the entire body. I wash my face, but you should be careful if you have sensitive skin.WASH YOUR HANDS! If not, they will discolor! Pay care to your knuckles and nails! AVOID GETTING WET ON YOUR BODY.4. I only wait one hour before taking a shower. (For me, this is great. Self-tanners take ages to work!)5. Color takes 6 to 8 hours to develop, so don't be disappointed if the lotion's color fades in the shower. It will return very shortly! The scent is another advantage. As long as my self-tanner is on my skin, I typically smell it. I don't smell it with this till after the first shower. The scent is COMPLETELY GONE following the second shower! AMAZING!The color dries down gradually and uniformly. To maintain some color, I just want to use once every week.Cons: The hue is SLIGHTLY orange, but not enough to make me feel self-conscious. That's the only drawback. I feel attractive, lean, and tanned. For deeper color, try altering the amount of time you leave on your skin. For me, an hour works perfectly. Any longer, I fear I might come out as too false. Six hours later, even after 30 minutes, I can already notice a lovely glow. I have a great, natural glow but will never have a dark, deep tan. I am joyful! Therefore, if I can spare someone's skin, please try this instead of going to bed.

Ed Hardy Coconut Kisses Golden Tanning Lotion, 13.5 oz Review:

I bought this lotion after doing extensive web research and learning that it was/is rated as the best tanning lotion without tingling or bronzer for 2017/2018. I had also seen the conflicting reviews of this moisturizer on Amazon.com. I wanted something different because I already own bronzer and tingly lotions. It smells nearly like vanilla almonds in the bottle, which is quite light. Once applied, though, it reacts with my unique body chemistry and develops a perfume-like aroma that isn't very tropical but is neither overpowering nor unpleasant. It feels incredibly silky and hydrating on my skin and is a very thick, opulent lotion. I appreciate that there is no traditional bronzer in it, so I won't have to worry about stains on my clothes or hands. There is no doubt that the after-tan scent has been completely eliminated. My skin is still soft, smooth, and silky hours after tanning. It doesn't dry as quickly as some other lotions I've tested, but it does so in around two minutes. After only two tanning treatments, I can definitely tell the difference in my skin tone. I already had a fantastic base tan, but this lotion greatly enhanced it. In general, I am pleased and delighted with this buy. The smell is the only thing I would change. I want a smell that is more tropical.

Maui Babe Browning Lotion 8 Ounces Review:

I would say this is better than the salon version because it just has a better color. I tan in a stand-up tanning bed, and for me, I must put a towel on the floor and stand on it while I'm in the stand-up tanning bed so that if any drips it doesn't stain. Yeah, I won't lie down on a bed with it on because it stains like crazy. They fixed the mailing packaging to help with spilling.

Hempz Dark Tan Maximizer, Hypoallergenic, 9 Ounce Review:

I'm glad I found this material once more! I use it to moisturize my hands and feet because I have sensitive skin, and I also use it to tan. GREAT STUFF — more than accomplishes the job. GREAT STUFF WITHOUT ANY WEIRD SMELL! I can't rave enough about this item! I am aware that it is only for tanning, yet it worked well when I needed psoriasis and excema relief. Smooth and absorbent, high quality.

St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, 1.69 Fl Oz Review:

As an expert tanner, I've used a lot of different products. I began with the less expensive ones because I was initially unwilling to pay so much for a self-tanner, but after testing many (Jergan's, Neutrogina, Fake Bake), I discovered that each of them had a flaw, and I was still looking for anything that was superior to the previous product. The best self-tanner, in my opinion, is St. Tropez, which is also cost-effective.Positives: The color dries naturally, leaves no orange residue, and lasts for around 7–12 days.I occasionally use an Elf kabuki makeup brush, which takes longer but blends incredibly well. I use the Skinerals applicator, which is fantastic (don't use cheap ones; your tan will only look as well as your applicator works).

Sun Bum Natural Browning Lotion | Dark Tanning Lotion with Organic Coconut Oil, Kona Coffee Extract and Aloe Vera | Gluten Free and Vegan | 8.5 FL Oz Review:

I'm in utter love with this company! I exclusively use Sun Bum, and nothing else! Because this tanning lotion has no SPF, those who are sensitive to the sun should put on Sun Bum sunscreen first. I never get sunburned even when I don't wear sunscreen. I use this lotion since it's extremely moisturizing and my skin gets so dark when I don't. Although it's not a sunless tanner, as soon as I apply it, I begin to darken. The only drawback of this product is that it could stain my swimming suit, but a hand wipe would easily remove it. I like it even though it kind of smells like coffee beans. I also use it on my face, never getting acne. After using the tanning oil with SPF 15, I greatly like this. It also lasts for a while! I could go on and on, but trust me when I tell that this tanning cream is the greatest ever!

Do you rub in tanning oil?

Most people don't bother to rub in tanning oil before lying in the sun, but it's actually really important to do so! The oil helps to create an even tan and prevents the skin from drying out.

Does tanning oil damage your skin?

Tanning oil can damage your skin in a number of ways. First, it can increase your risk of skin cancer by increasing the amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that penetrates your skin. Second, it can cause premature aging of the skin, including wrinkles, age spots, and dryness. Finally, tanning oil can irritate your skin, leading to rashes, swelling, and other skin problems.

How do I make my tan deeper?

There are a number of ways to make your tan deeper. You can spend more time in the sun, or you can use a tanning bed or sunlamp. You can also use a self-tanning product, like a lotion, cream, or spray.

How do you get a good tan without burning?

To get a good tan without burning, you need to find a balance between exposing yourself to the sun and protecting your skin. You can do this by gradually increasing your sun exposure over time and using sunscreen when you are in the sun.

How long does it take to tan with tanning oil?

Tanning oil is great for achieving a quick tan. However, how long it takes to tan with tanning oil really depends on how long you stay in the sun. If you are only in the sun for a short period of time, you may not see much of a difference. However, if you are in the sun for an extended period of time, you will notice a deeper tan.

How long should I tan for?

The length of time you should spend tanning depends on your skin type, the time of year, and the intensity of the sun. If you have fair skin, you may only need to tan for a few minutes, while someone with darker skin may need to tan for 20 minutes or more. The best way to determine how long you should tan is to talk to a dermatologist or a professional at a tanning salon.
