It appears to be effective. This was bought for an older hot tub that we used to own. With only cleaning tablets and the occasional shock treatment, we cycled some water, but after a few days, it was still becoming hazy. We noticed a lot of brown sludge floating to the top after Oh Yuk was injected to try and clean the pipes. There was a brown film in the water and surrounding the hot tub after about an hour of using the prescribed treatment regimen. After draining the tub, we saw that this product had forced a lot of disgusting-looking trash out of the pipes. We attempted round two but were only partially successful. Anyone who owns a hot tub, especially those who are buying a secondhand one, should use this product, in my opinion. The water has been crystal clean for more than a week since we filled it back up.

It is up to you to remove the precipitate from the pool system after PHOSfree has successfully precipitated out phosphates. To make it simpler for me to remove it to precipitate, I added it gradually.The effects of high phosphate levels in pool water have been discussed extensively (both here and elsewhere on the internet). Since I am not a chemist, I won't get involved in that debate. I'm just a regular guy who maintains his own pool. In my position, removing the phosphates would require less work in maintaining the pool.Information from my experience that may be helpful to others:My filter is made of diatomaceous earth (DE filter). This is pertinent to anyone who might not fully comprehend how lanthanum chloride (lacl3) and dissolved phosphates in water combine to form a precipitate. The plan is to then drain the pool system of the precipitate (which contains the phosphate that has been locked up). Trapping it in the filter and then cleaning it is the simplest way to accomplish it. That entails eliminating the loaded/dirty DE with a DE filter (and then replacing the DE). With this in mind, I modified the manufacturer's instructions to suit my needs (as I don't want to put myself through any more work than is required). In essence, I progressively added the PHOSfree to my skimmer, doing so in smaller batches than recommended and at longer intervals than recommended. I did this so that I could catch all of the precipitate by giving it time to form in the pipe before it reached the DE. Additionally, I did this as the flowrate into the pool decreased and the upstream pressure of my DE filter increased. I was able to stop adding the PHOSfree when the upstream filter pressure reached its maximum since I added it gradually. After that, I stopped adding PHOSfree, backwashed and removed the loaded DE, refilled with fresh/clean DE, and started the pump and filter system. I resumed adding PHOSfree slowly and incrementally after the pool system was operating steadily and reliably with a newly charged DE filter. I had a lot of phosphates, so I repeated this entire DE recharge at least once more, up until the point when adding PHOSfree no longer caused any changes in the upstream filter pressure or the flow rate through the filter.IT DOES WORK, PERIOD.

I can say with confidence that after using this product for six years, it significantly reduces the likelihood of algal blooms.I initially purchased it to try and remove some black algae stains that were troubling a few locations on the vinyl liner. They were not helped by it.This summer has been Quite wet and frequently very hot. Even though I haven't been applying any more chlorine or algaecide than usual, those are ideal circumstances for algae growth. Once a week, I've been taking three capfuls of this. Every time I change the water in my hot tub, I use a brand-new bottle. Since we use well water, our water is quite "soft" and low in minerals. When I would replace the hot tub water, I didn't notice any clouding, odour, or discoloration. After using my hot tub for over a year, I discovered the bottle of Metal Gon that came with it but I had never used. I made the decision to put it in a bottle the following time I cycled the water after reading why I would use it. Wow is all I have to say. This item is incredible! This cost a lot more when we originally bought it from our neighborhood pool store. Although it was effective, I didn't want to continue paying the high cost, so I tried running our spa without adding it for a while. We are learning via trial and error because we are new spa proprietors. Since the water was bouncing around so much, I probably wasted hundreds of dollars on chemicals simply attempting to keep it balanced. I finally gave in and bought more since I was at my wit's end. With battling PH bounce for months and needing to use a lot of chlorine, I'm delighted to report that after just one treatment, my water chemistry is once again steady. Due to the dark slimy substance that would appear after every usage for the first month, I initially believed that this was causing more problems than it was solving. But I soon learned that's exactly what it's supposed to do—bring all the contaminants to the surface so that it will be simpler to physically remove them from the spa water. Make sure to adhere to the recommended chlorine level and avoid applying it the same day that you administer shock. I use it once a week, and my spa water hasn't looked and felt this beautiful in months. In essence, all I have to do is maintain my chlorine level. I add it, check the next day, clear the scum it has brought to the top, test the chemical levels, etc. My PH no longer fluctuates, weekly rinsing of my fliters is much simpler, and the time required for maintenance has been cut in half!! Of course, after using the spa, we employ a non-chlorine oxidizing shock. I should mention that we also make use of the spa mineral sanitizing stick. Perfectly functional. We have a 32,000 inground generator using salt. The water changed from clear to foggy to blue green to dark grey in a matter of days. Although I check the water myself, I had it checked multiple times at the neighborhood pool business as a precaution. Chemistry was satisfactory, although nitrates and pH were high, and FC was satisfactory but low. They also suggested shock, algecide, lowering the pH, phos free, seaKlear, etc. With each treatment, I observed no change and the water looked worse. The pH returned to a normal range, which was the sole positive. Anyway, I looked into the subject and found this item. After that, I had a fantastic online chat with a Robarb representative via their website. I gave him my general chemistry readings, and he suggested numerous things as well as some other things to look into. In accordance with his advice, I ran the filter overnight, turbo-shocked the pool using non-CYA shock, and observed a significant improvement where I could see the main drains in the deep end. I took new readings and everything seemed to be in order, so I added the prescribed amount of Super Blue. An hour later, I could already detect a difference. A crystal-clear pool was there when I woke up 12 hours later (overnight). The product and, more significantly, the Robarb customer service have completely wowed me. I'll keep using this product as a part of my weekly upkeep.

This is the greatest pool product now available, but a word of advice: acquire it in plastic bottles instead of plastic packets because they are safer and simpler to use. I bought it for two pools, and so far I haven't experienced the issue the expert who certainly knows more about the chemical buildup permanently changing the water balance earlier had mentioned. I simply know that it is more affordable on Amazon than at Texas' large box retailers and more simpler to get delivered than in physical places. It performs better than any "super shock" goods sold by any of those Pool Supply stores. I've tried them all, and this product, when used with Clorox algaecide, will completely change the color of a pool from green to blue in just one day.

Regarding this product, I had my doubts. Honestly. I'm no longer. They are fantastic! They were created for those like myself who don't always keep up with hot tub maintenance. Before, I probably would have had to drain the hot tub if I became uncoordinated and promptly forgot to add chemicals. I can be a little flaky because of these tiny balls. And placing the ball in the hot tub is all there is to it. No work is necessary! These are generally not necessary if you are someone who is always on top of pool and spa upkeep. If you're not that person, ask these Scum balls to help you stay a little flaky.

Due to the contradictory reviews, I hesitated to buy this. I'm not sure if this is due to the fact that some people are unfamiliar with owning a hot tub and have unrealistic expectations or simply don't know how to properly maintain a hot tub. This is what we most recently used to remove foam from our hot tub. Our hot tub needs regular foam treatment. The foam is a result of the water's regular use introducing debris and grease. As disgusting as it may sound, dead skin cells will come off when you enter the hot tub because we have oil on our skin. This anti-foam appears to perform on par with some of the more expensive products we have bought from a nearby pool and spa store. To completely mix the water and anti-foam, you must run to the jets for a bit. It doesn't take much. Foam in a hot tub is typical, once more. Usually, I used this in conjunction with a water clarifier, and the dirt would build on the hot tub's side, which you could clean off with a fresh hand towel.
