I bought two of these WAYNE 1/3 HP submersible pumps and put them in my basement crawl space. One has been operating for roughly three years, and the most recent acquisition replaced a different brand that was about ten years old and malfunctioning.Overall, this one is excellent. It is incredibly simple to install, quiet, and dependable. Additionally, it does not need the additional backflow hole to be drilled in the output pipe. Another advantage of this model is that, unlike models from many other companies, it can be used in basins that are smaller.I attached the pump to a 1/2 male adapter, then to a small 1/2 piece of PVC, then to a 1/2 one-way check valve, then to a larger 1/2 inch piece of PVC, then to a 1/2 rubber sleeve, and finally to a 1/2 piece of PVC that was bonded the rest of the way out. With this configuration, it will be simple to remove and/or replace the pump in the future without requiring the cutting or replacement of ANY PVC pipe.This is the second one I have, and I definitely suggest it.

I have used every form of pump possible because my family has worked in the construction industry all my life, including centrifugal pumps, piston garbage pumps, gear pumps, peristalsis pumps (often used for chemical pumping), and of course, surface pumps like this one. Several problems plague surface pumps: Will they pump at what depth? Easily clogable are they? Are they simple to prime? Will they be able to move water a long way up (essential for pumping water out of low regions like a flooded basement)? What happens if the supply runs out? This pump provides excellent solutions to all but one of the following: If you don't turn it off when it runs out of fuel, it will self-destruct. This is a major issue since it takes hours to pump out, and you can't just stay there and watch the pump continually. Anyone who has ever pumped out something like a flooded basement will understand how serious it is. Of course, you have to watch that the pump doesn't clog, but it won't damage itself if it does so for a while, unlike if it runs empty. Some pumps do in fact feature float switches, although they are more expensive. Some pumps have temperature sensors built in, so if the pump starts to overheat from running dry, it shuts off and restarts when it cools off (this system is typically less expensive than a float switch, and it works better for pumping down very close to the floor because float switches can't work very close to the floor). This pump's utility is constrained by the need to keep an eye on it to prevent it from going dry. However, it excels at preventing clogs and pumping as low as 1/16 inch, which is the lowest that any pump can go. Another useful feature is the double discharge, which lets you position the discharge hose without risk of kinking. Therefore, it is a terrific option if you are prepared to monitor this pump carefully.

Thanks to Sunday Prime delivery, I got this yesterday along with the Campbell Quiet Sump check valve, and I was able to easily replace the old pump with new one. My 5-year-old Zoeller 1/2 HP was having trouble cycling, and I knew it was almost over. The pump has only been in the pit for 24 hours, so I can't comment for how long it will last, but I'm surprised by how well it was built and how the suction intake was placed just high enough to prevent little gravel from being sucked up. It takes roughly 20 seconds for the 3/4 filled pit to be completely empty. Don't forget to drill the discharge riser's 1/8" relief hole so that water can flow back into the sump below the check valve.EDIT: After one night, the pump ceased to function. When the water level reached the "off" level, the float switch did not work to turn the pump off. When I have a thorough analysis of the customer service encounter, I will update this.EDIT 2 1/27/2016: Two days after notifying Amazon that pump #1 was dead on arrival, I received the replacement pump unit. Since then, the replacement has been operating quietly and effectively. I'd have no qualms with purchasing another Wayne pump.

This pump is absolutely AMAZING! In my dry-treatment crawl space, which receives some water during strong, protracted rains here in Maryland, I required a pump to remove the water. Crawling repeatedly into and out of the crawl space entry with my 3 gallon wet vac was a pain. With this pump, I only had to crawl inside once to remove the water. What formerly took an hour or more, took 10 minutes with a great deal less annoyance. The pump operated perfectly with a 50 foot hose that was elevated by about 2 feet. I fixed the pump's lack of a switch by getting a 3 prong grounded switch here (smile.amazon.com/dp/B01M7V6U2Q/ref=cm sw em r mt dp U g1kiDbTGXA1FZ). And I'm glad I got a hose filter to protect the pump because I had to take out some debris twice to get the best pumping power. The filter I bought from this website, https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00190OF9M/ref=cm sw em r mt dp U DdliDbZZTBXPW, was quite effective and reasonably priced for protecting the pump. Due to the uneven terrain that made the accompanying flat suction attachment ineffective for my requirements, I just utilized the feed hose to remove the standing water. Given the cost and utility of this pump, I heartily recommend it. Oh, it's not as loud as some people claim, but it's only meant to be used occasionally, not constantly. Additionally, as long as water was running through the pump, it did not become heated.

This is a fantastic little pump that has "zero" parts support and a very poor instruction manual. The majority of complaints are probably a result of poor instructions, a lack of video or troubleshooting support, and a disconnect between the sellers and parts support. The manual ought to contain the answers to queries like the one below (for instance, do you have to prime it every time—or just the first time) however, they're not. (Reply: "Yes, always.") They issue ominous warnings about damaging your pump, but the good news is that, should this happen, you can probably fix it with a replacement part. I'm currently screwing the pump frame to a surface because it does contain small holes for that purpose.
