I recently received a Raspberry Pi 4 starting MAX Kit from CanaKit. In my home, this Pi will join nine others that are permanently installed and operational 24/7. The specific Pi will function as an Apache web server. But there are also other uses, such as a WWVB clock, an NTP server with a chip-scale cesium atomic clock, two GPS clocks, a GPS/NTP real-time monitor, and four for a differential GNSS project. There are perhaps a dozen others in storage that also played a part in various projects, such as an IPv6 test bed.These were all CanaKits that included different Raspberry Pi models. I enjoy the kits since they [1] contain almost everything I need, [2] are functional, [3] are reasonably priced, and [4] are easy to acquire from Amazon and arrive within a few days.Only for initial setup utilizing a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, I run all of my Raspberry Pis headlessly. After then, I primarily manage them by remotely accessing them via my home network, usually wirelessly, via SSH.Years ago, when I installed 4.2 BSD on a VAX 750, I first encountered UNIX. I was happy to install Linux on a (relatively speaking) enormous tower PC in my home after purchasing a set of CDs with the Yggdrasil Linux distribution on them. I recently purchased one of these straight from Canakit, and I've tested it with both a brand-new Raspian Buster installation and an upgrade from Stretch using the "change the sources for apt and do update and dist-upgrade" method. There were a few hiccups in the later due to some adjustments, but I overcame them and will continue to use that version that has been significantly adjusted to my taste.This actually has the potential to replace a laptop. I purchased the 4 GB version, and it took several active tabs in Chrome, including Gmail, audacity, a few file managers, a few terminals, and eventually the Arduino IDE to push it just a bit past the reported 1 GB. In the background, this was also running NGINX, MariaDB, several of my daemons, VNCserver, and other miscellaneous programs.It's not quite as fast as my old Lenovo core 2 duo, but it's close and may even be faster for some types of programming that can utilize all four cores.The negative: The heatsinks border on being a joke. You are almost throttling even at idle. The addition of the fan from the "explaining computers" youtube channel has made the device keep as cool as possible; the noctua 40mm fan is well worth the money for this. Carefully cut a 1.5" hole with a hole saw at the top...SystemD modifications (not the fault of the rpi) I once again broke a few things. It actually deleted a few of my.service files, so I had to recreate them elsewhere and enable them using systemctl as opposed to it simply determining that they were in the proper directory.A lot of features in Buster are nicer than they were in Stretch, like the network setup in especially and the CPU temperature monitor.I'll purchase more of these.

The RPi 3 B still holds its own against new boards that include inbuilt AI (such the Kirin 970 chipset, which costs around $300).Although several SBCs that have lately become available, including its own successor, the Raspberry Pi 3 B , have surpassed the Raspberry Pi 3 B in some way, the Pi 3 B is still less expensive and a surprisingly capable computer.The Pi3 appears to be well behind numerous other boards based on its specifications when compared to those of the Pi3. This is completely untrue; the Pi3 runs faster than competing boards that boast a double increase in processing power.The key benefits are its simplicity of use, adaptability, and enormously large support community. If you have issues, solving them and moving past them is incredibly streamlined. I wish everyone would move to the more popular micro USB connector instead of the USB B connector, but unfortunately, I guess they believe we still need to be able to use the original connector. The micro-controller, an incredibly popular ATmega328P operating at 16 mHz, is used. Instead of a generic chip, the USB-to-serial interface uses the official Atmega16u2 chip (like the CH340G or something that cheaper kits use).Two separate solderless prototyping breadboards are included in this package, along with a power supply module that connects into the larger one. A servo and two separate motors are available in good numbers. The 7-segment displays and the bigger character LCD are just two alternatives for showing data. For things like temperature, humidity, proximity, infrared, etc., there are numerous sensor modules. Then there are the parts that are used more frequently, such as switches, resistors, LEDs, buzzers, and so forth.Basically, this kit has all the components needed to get started and is sufficient for hundreds of different Arduino projects. I already have a good number of Arduinos, Arduino modules, and Arduino components, but I really enjoy this kit since it offers a handy all-in-one set of components and handy storage box that I can bring along to demonstrate and assist others with their projects.



Elegoo EL-CP-004 120pcs Multicolored Dupont Wire 40pin Male to Female, 40pin Male to Male, 40pin Female to Female Breadboard Jumper Wires Ribbon Cables Kit for arduino Review:


For making Arduino breadboard projects, these are fantastic. I haven't had any issues there. My issue arose when I cut some of the wires for a small circuit board so I could solder one end while keeping the female or male end on the other side. Certain wires won't accept solder. After removing the plastic, I discover a black coating on the wire; despite my best efforts and the amount of flux I use, these wires will not solder and are a major hassle. A little higher wire quality would be beneficial. I've noticed it occurs frequently on the white wires in my batch, but not all of the wires are like this.UPDATE: Elegoo got in touch with me and decided to swap out the wires. Elegoo appears to genuinely care about its customers, therefore I raised the rating one star even though I haven't had chance to test if these have the same problem when trying to solder. I'll update the review once I've had a chance to solder one of these (it must be somewhere where I need one end with a connector and I'm soldering the other end). Anyway, Elegoo provided excellent customer service.



ELEGOO UNO R3 Board ATmega328P ATMEGA16U2 with USB Cable Compatible with Arduino IDE Projects, RoHS Compliant Review:


There is no doubt that this is an open source replica of the Arduino Uno board; neither are they claiming to be. Nevertheless, it appears to function quite well, and given the price difference, it is worthwhile to purchase. I recently bought a genuine Arduino that I permanently integrated into a project, thus I wanted another one to experiment with. I noticed a few discrepancies between the two. The actual Arduino was packaged with a plastic mounting platform that protects the Arduino UNO's bottom from any type of metal project box you may want to utilize. If not, you would need to find another solution, like plastic standoffs, to shield the board from the metal. The Elegoo comes with a short USB cable, however the Arduino does not, which is another odd difference. The short USB turns out to be necessary for the Elegoo and incompatible with the Arduino. In contrast, the Elegoo short cable cannot be used with the Arduino; it needs a regular USB (printer) cable. That was at least my experience after trying both approaches multiple times. Sincerely, I thought the Elegoo would operate with a conventional wire, which it didn't in my situation, and found the plastic mounting base to be a more practical extra.



Flirc Raspberry Pi 4 Case (Silver) Review:


The case I've been working on is the best. A significant benefit of the plastic bottom is that WiFi is not obstructed, which is a problem with all aluminum cases. The greatest in keeping the core cool, as well. It barely hits 80 °C and barely initiates thermal cpu throttling even when running LINPACK, the same benchmark for the TOP500 supercomputer list.The area that matches with the CPU is not flat, and there is even a bubble-making molding mark on it (shown in picture). Another problem is that a substantial thermal pad is employed to isolate the enclosure from the CPU. Better contact would be ideal so that heat could be conveyed more effectively. Finally, the top features a lovely soft-touch plastic layer that looks fantastic but prevents heat transfer, making the CPU hotter. Thankfully, the plastic cap can be removed.However, even with all four cores operating at maximum capacity, heat is still quite effectively transferred to the case; I can't keep my finger against any portion of it for more than a few seconds.



CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan (4GB RAM) Review:


I purchased the transparent case Canakit Pi 4 Starter Kit (4GB). I also have a clear-cased Canakit Pi 3.The kit is simple to put together; just be careful when connecting the fan and place it so that air is blowing into the box.Each component snaps into place with ease. Vilros Raspberry Pi Zero W Basic Starter Kit- Black Case Edition-Includes Pi Zero W -Power Supply & Premium Black Case Review:


Less SD card, HDMI converter, and USB hub, but a nice complete setup. The SD card access would improve this nice enclosure. Purchased to serve as a Raspberry Pi introduction, but after just two days I realized I should have gone with the more potent Pi3, so I got the bigger sibling.The zero is fairly incredible considering its small, but it doesn't have enough power to make a big difference. The Zero's tiny size is also lost when a USB hub is added, albeit a bluetooth input device could eliminate the necessity for the hub.This is ideal if you want to experiment and learn the ropes or if you have a specific purpose in mind (IOT, Headless, Etc.) RetroPie worked flawlessly on the Zero with a few very early systems, but I encountered into issues with several SNES and more recent roms. It currently runs OSMC, which is functional but has a poor input response and which I haven't yet managed to get to play streaming video satisfactorily. Choose the Pi3 if you want something that can do more jobs or if you want to set up a vintage gaming console or media center.I'm sure I'll find a brilliant purpose for the zero, but if I could go back in time, I'd just skip it and start with the Pi3. It wasn't much more affordable than the Pi3 until I added the USB hub, SD card, and HDMI converter.One bit of advise for the Zero: don't try to download and install the OS on the device itself because it takes forever; instead, load your OS image to the SD card from your computer. I gave up after three hours, took out the card, and flashed the downloaded image.



Vilros Raspberry Pi 4 Complete Kit with Clear Transparent Fan Cooled Case (4GB) Review:


Despite all of its advantages, the pi had significant drawbacks in terms of development. If you wanted to open a couple Chrome tabs while working on a project, you had to ssh into it from a real computer. I myself prefer to have multiple tabs open while researching how to accomplish various tasks, and I could never do that with Pi 1-3.The 4g model accepts it without issue. No need to switch hdmi connections or ssh from a computer if I needed the Raspberry Pi to display something. No more abrupt freezing with a 100% CPU load when you open a text document (pi zero).It has various drawbacks, such as the inability to be used as a device on another computer due to the usb-lack c's of support for slave mode. Quite annoying considering how simple it would have been to implement. So if you require that, you're stuck with a pi zero; maybe the next revision will update that.From the Pi 3, the bootup is considerably faster. include USB transfer rates I intend to purchase a Google Coral USB Stick so I can experiment with some TensorFlow and OpenCV projects. Something that, albeit being significantly slower on a Pi3, would have worked.Regarding the remaining components of the package. The heatsinks that are included are good, but you only really need to use them for the CPU and memory. The other two are used by the ethernet and USB controllers. Not often anything that requires a heatsink. A resistor or capacitor bank can be readily bridged while installing these heatsinks, which could potentially harm the circuit board. Those 2 I'm holding back for another project.A heavy workload necessitates and benefits from the fan. When you maintain the pi4's temps around 80 degrees Celsius, which you will ultimately do with just a heatsink, the pi4 is significantly faster overall. My fan is set to "silent mode," which is the red wire to 3.3v and the black wire to ground, because the fan is loud on 5v. Still gets warm, in the low to mid 70s, but there is no throttle. The fan wires are relatively short. The wires must wind around the fan, across the dsi port (above the sd card slot), and back around to the gpio after exiting the hdmi/usb-c side. There is just about enough length.There is a firmware upgrade available as of this writing to further reduce temperatures by 3-5c, but it appears that doing so also slows down USB read/write performance. I haven't used it and won't be messing with it.You can see they spent a little money producing the plastic because the case is of decent quality. The tolerances are narrow, and the pi snaps into place with a gratifying snap when the lid is closed. If you drop it off your desk, it won't pop open because of its thickness. The ribbon cable will go into the fan if you utilize the camera mount on the chassis, which is a problem because doing so might easily destroy the cable. Although it worked for me, the cable may have easily been broken.Power supply is ideal for running the Raspberry Pi with any workload and a respectable number of accessories. I might need a powered USB bank to fit my coral USB stick and a webcam at 500 mA, but I might not.The SD card works great. A genuine Samsung sd, too.It was a little difficult to determine what the tiny black box in the image was (left of the pi in the main pic). It is the USB reader for the SD card, as I had believed. Just haven't seen that design before. The male USB section and a little slot for an SD card are all that is really there. Design that is really simple and economical but effective.I bought the 4GB kit for $100 and am not sorry I did. Despite a few small flaws, pi4 is a significant improvement over pi3. The remainder of the kit offers decent value for the money. You won't receive a weak case or a subpar power supply.
