Yes, you can turn pens on a full size lathe. You will need to have a few things to get started including a pen blank, a mandrel, and a few tools. Once you have those things, you can start turning your pen.
You can use normal chisels on a lathe, but it is not recommended. The reason being is that the cutting edge of a lathe chisel is designed to cut at a very specific angle, and a normal chisel is not. This can cause the chisel to chatter or dig in, which can ruin your workpiece or even cause injury.
You can turn a bowl that is 12 inches in diameter and 6 inches deep on a 12 inch lathe.
The size of the lathe will depend on the size of the bowls that you want to make. If you want to make small bowls, then you will need a small lathe. If you want to make large bowls, then you will need a large lathe.

The chuck cannot fully close because the arbor of the Wen lathe extends into the hollow. It is still open to about a half ". The bigger problem is that this also hinders the worm from properly sitting. It appears that adding a 1 will fix this "Between the lathe and the chuck, place an ID washer (or two). I believe Nova need to have tested this more thoroughly and included the washer or spacer in the package. I am aware that they cannot test every lathe, but Wen is a fairly well-known brand, and they do market this as a universal chuck. Besides that, the stuff is excellent. It also arrives completely covered in oil, so be ready to thoroughly clean this before using.

If you love to turn pens or are considering taking pen turning up as a hobby, then this kit is a must for your pen blank preparation process. Typically after you have glued the brass tubes into your pen blanks and the tube is completely dry, it is common practice to clean up, square and trim the ends of the blanks.
This is done so that the blank is flat on both ends and to make sure the brass tube meets with the bushings in a clean true manner.
If you are using a hand drill, we recommend securing the blank into a workbench vise if a pen centering vise is not available to you. The kit includes a 3/4 inch cutting Head, 7mm, 8mm, 3/8 inch, 10mm Pilot Cutter Shaft, 0 Size Adaptor Sleeve and a Hex Key Wrench for the cutting head.

This tailstock is sealed, as opposed to the PSI tailstock, so there is no chance that it will break loose on the back end and expose the bearings to debris and dust. This is a good chuck for the price. I measured about.001" runout on the 2MT bit that protrudes from the bore,.003" on the chuck's nose, and just a little bit more than.001" on a piece of 1/2" drill rod in the chuck. The movement seemed to be very fluid; I didn't go "ooooh," but I also didn't curse. The metal's quality is decent; it's not silky smooth like it was crafted by dwarves in the high mountains, but it's also not the normal shoddy finish that tools from this region of the globe have. At 600 RPM, I felt the tiniest tremor, which leads me to believe that it might be somewhat unbalanced. Oh, and if you want to use this in a bench-top drill press, this chuck will be much larger than the one that was originally included. I've used mine in a Ryobi that I've owned for at least ten years, and I enjoy it so far. How effectively it functions for regular use will be determined by time (and use).

Despite the fact that I only recently acquired them, these rests are exactly what I was searching for. These fit the holder well, and I have a Harbor Freight 10" x 18" lathe that I've had for two years. The small bowls I manufacture will fit perfectly within because they are exactly 5/8. Scrapers and other tools can glide on the rails quite easily because they are so smooth. I can't wait to utilize these.

Not what you get is the Whiteside 9810 Brass Set Up Gauges, 5 Piece. The bars in the image are labeled with their sizes. These are all unmarked. In the same price range, there are competing sets that are likewise unmarked. I label each bar's sizes with a black permanent marker. They have also helped me develop my ability to rapidly and easily recognize minor dimensions at a glance. Being brass, I wouldn't use an engraver on any of the faces because I might alter the proportions by elevating burs, for example, which would be difficult to remove while maintaining the accuracy of the bar. If you need this, you might be better at it.Because I use both sets frequently, I prefer to place them on a shelf above the workstation for easy access. I occasionally carry them in my shop apron while being cautious. These would work well for the majority of woodworkers.Machinists or individuals who seek pinpoint accuracy are likely aware that the quality they require requires a higher price. They help me set up the hand routers, router table, mitre saw, drill press, and table saw. Along with a variety of hand tools, I have used them with my cherished bench planes. Note that I do not drop them into the machine when using them on a table saw since I use a zero clearance insert.They can be used to quickly obtain measures that are frequently more exact than using any of my store rulers by stacking or laying them alongside one another.They are shorter lengths and have nearly the same advantages and disadvantages as these, even though my original set was purchased from a large woodworking retailer. Having two sets offers me greater freedom to mix sizes, utilize them to get what I want (for instance) on the left and right sides of what I'm working on, or use both sets at the top and bottom of my project piece at once.My metric next set will be used. I used this to make a bowl yesterday, and I'm quite pleased. It is a fantastic improvement over my old lathe. I used a face place to shape the wood and create the tenon, and then this chuck did the rest. I tightened the chuck a little bit further twice following catches, but that was to be anticipated.In contrast to what is stated in the description, it can hold diameters ranging from 1 5/8 to 2 7/8 on the outside and from 2 to 3 1/4 on the inside.Looks like an excellent purchase!
