Best Portable Air Compressors in 2020

DEWALT DCC020IB 20V Max Inflator (Bare) Review:

When they say bare tool, they mean bare tool. In the description, at the very end, it does say battery, AC adapter and charger sold separately, but it does say in the specs section that it comes with a battery......it doesn’t. Since I use DeWalt tools, I’ve got batteries and chargers. However, to not include the ACC plug for use in cars is an insult to the customer and DeWalts reputation for quality. Every other portable air compressor I looked at came with a car ACC plug. It’s natural to assume this one would come with an ACC cord since the battery and charger aren’t included. Hence the 4 star rating. The compressor works well, has some great features, but if you don’t already own some 20V DeWalt tools, you can’t use it out of the box. I’ve got drills, grinder, vacuum and saws all tools from the 20V collection, so I can keep it, but come on DeWalt, include the ACC cord!

BOSTITCH Pancake Air Compressor, Oil-Free, 6 Gallon, 150 PSI (BTFP02012) Review:

I had read some pretty good reviews on this one, and decided to order it. Having been looking around, I found that most 6-gal. pancake compressors were 1 - 1.5 HP. I couldn't find the horsepower rating on this one's advertising, specification list nor the manual. Finally I went to the company website and sent them an email asking what was the HP rating. The next day I received their reply and was disappointed to hear it was only 0.8 HP. So with that I decided to let its performance show its worth. It came two days later (fast!). After reading all instructions I turned it on, watching the time it took to reach its max (150) psi. I was surprised it took only less than 3 minutes! With hoses and a tire filler installed I waited a half hour and checked the pressure gage, and it had not shown any noticeable pressure loss. I topped off the tires of both my car and truck and then bled the pressure off. I then turned the unit around, over, upside-down and inspected it over-all for general quality; Weldment, materials, components and workmanship. Evidently it manages its power well enough to arrive and maintain its pressure rating, and seems sturdy and well made. Btw, I am a retired Quality Assurance Specialist for the U.S. Department of Defense. If I were to inspect this product for acceptance on a gov't contract, I would have no problem giving it my stamp and signature. Bottom line, a nice little compressor, especially at that (sale) price!

Kensun AC/DC Digital Tire Inflator for Car 12V DC and Home 110V AC Rapid Performance Portable Air Compressor Pump for Car, Bicycle, Motorcycle, Basketball and Others Review:

I don't write many reviews, but in this case I feel compelled to do so. Let me explain why.

I had ordered the Kensun in the past two weeks and received it very promptly. The reviews on this little machine had been very positive and I have never been a fan nor had I any interest in having a gas powered compressor in my garage. So this unit looked as though it would do the trick. Packaging was good, the little bag it comes in is handy and the quality also seemed up to a good standard. Having been out of the country for three weeks, my cars tires needed some air, particularly one on my larger sedan, which was so low I could not have driven it to the gas station for a fill up. So I was excited to hook up the Kensun and take care of business. Did everything as explained, and then, nothing. The machine would start up, run for two seconds and shut off. I tried it on three different tires, changed from AC to DC and back, unplugged, reset, etc. but to no avail. Keep in mind that I couldn't move one of my cars, and you can understand that I was a little miffed. Returned the unit the next day and left an unhappy review.

Not two days later, Gary from Kensun customer service sends me an email apologizing for my bad experience. He made the point that I may have ended up with a lemon, and that even cars selling for $30k have lemons among them. He then asked if they could send me another unit to see if this was indeed the case. I took him up on it. This was not some empty marketing talk. He not only send me another unit, but also asked for me to be in touch with him to let him know how things went.

Well, received the unit today, and guess what, it works flawlessly! Gary was right, it had been a lemon, and I had been too quick to judge. I will be the first one to make a wrong a right. This little machine does what it promises to do and I am thrilled to own one now. Kudos to their customer service, not a given these days. It was refreshing to have this kind of response and follow through. Makes me trust the brand that much more, thus a fully deserved five stars. Thank you Gary and Kensun for handling this so professionally!

Only tiny complaint (and others have mentioned it) is that the LCD display has to be at a very specific angle to be readable, not a big deal, but slightly annoying. Maybe you can fix that in the future.

DEWALT Pancake Air Compressor, 6 Gallon, 165 PSI (DWFP55126) Review:

I almost did not purchase this item because it cost more than the other (more popular) comparable offerings from Bostich and Porter Cable. In retrospect I am glad I did. It is relatively quiet, and works just as I had hoped it would. I am a Dewalt fan and have many of their 20 and 12 volt battery tools which all have worked great for me.

One thing of interest I can add. I read on several reviews of other pancake compressors that a break in procedure of running the motor with the drain open for 15 minutes was crucial for continued long term use. However after going through the instructions carefully, I did not see this requirement. I called Dewalt and was told that this was true for their older models but was not needed for this model. He said just start using it as you need to right out of the box. He said it would not hurt it to do the break in procedure, but it was definitely not necessary.

Air Compressor, Portable, 3 Gallon Horizontal, Oilless, w/ 10 Piece Accessory Kit Including Air Hose & Inflation Gun (Campbell Hausfeld FP209499AV) Review:

I like to read the all the negative reviews before purchasing a product. After reading the reviews on this compressor I was a little concerned it might not do the job, but I took a chance because frankly I am flat broke and the price was right. I also knew if it was as bad as some made it sound, Amazon would make it right.

Some negative reviews complained about leaks: I have not seen this problem. All I can say is unless you get a defective unit and if you know how to put thread tape on (supplied), you should have no leaks. I can charge the compressor to 110 psi and if I don't use it, the next day it is still at 110 psi.

Some negative reviews also complained about noise: Yes, it is loud. However, it is no louder than I expected. The reviews made it sound like I would need ear protection to work around it. All I can think is that there was something wrong with their compressor, or they never listen to their music on 11...ever. :-)

I purchased this for a nail gun. It does an excellent job. I get 40 or more nails on a 110 psi charge and it takes under 6 minutes to go from empty to 110 psi. The light weight makes it easy to move as work progresses. After 40 or so nails, a quick coffee break while it recharges. A great little compressor and it is an outstanding price.

I don't know how well it will work for other types of applications, but for home projects, specifically nail gun projects, it is perfect. I am impressed and I give it my endorsement!
