Are photography light boxes worth it?

How big a photo light box do I need?

If you're wondering how big of a photo light box you need, a good rule of thumb is to get one that's at least twice the size of the largest object you'll be photographing. So, if you're planning on photographing small objects like jewelry, a 12" x 12" light box should be plenty. If you're photographing larger objects, like a product for an online store, you'll need a light box that's at least 24" x 24".

How big should a light box be?

A light box is a device that is used to emit light onto a surface. The size of a light box is determined by the amount of light that is needed to be emitted. The larger the light box, the more light that is emitted.

How can I make my own photography light?

If you're interested in photography, you've probably wondered how to create your own light. Here are a few tips to get you started: 1. Use a reflector. Reflectors are great for bouncing light back onto your subject, making them appear brighter in your photo. 2. Use a diffuser. Diffusers soften the light, making it more flattering on your subject. 3. Use natural light. If you can, take advantage of natural light by shooting near windows or outdoors. 4. Use artificial light. If you're shooting indoors,

ESDDI Photo Studio Light Box 20"/50cm Adjustable Brightness Portable Folding Hook & Loop Booth Table Top Photography Lighting Kit 120 LED Lights 4 Colors Backdrops Review:

TL:DR Excellent light box that is robust and simple to put up. strongly advise. The lengthy version The three major issues I had with photography were color, lighting, and simplicity.Since this is an all-in-one box, assembly is simple. The diffuser flap is added, the top and front of the box are closed, the top and front are sealed, the sides are placed where they need to be (hint: experiment with where on the velcro they rest, inner corners or outside edges), and the power cord is plugged in. I'll admit that at first it seemed like a Rubik's Cube, but once you figure it out, it's not that difficult. I can take pictures while it's conveniently positioned on my desk, verify the quality on my computer right away, and then move on to the next object. The issue with color and lighting is much the same. Your colors appear correctly lit, and the lighting in this box is really bright! There is an easy-to-use dimmer switch for brightness adjustment, and 4 backdrop options are provided for the optimum contrast in your images. My pictures now have a significantly better quality. One reviewer mentioned that they needed advice on what camera settings to use, but it would be challenging to respond because every camera has a unique set of settings. Use ISO 200 and Auto White Balance, and then start experimenting from there, is my best advice. It can be a hassle at first, but all you have to do is take a few pictures of the object, upload them to your computer, and then decide what has to be changed. Consider increasing the light from the dimmer switch or your exposure settings if the picture is too dark. Change as you go.Finally, I was surprised by the box's durability. Jumping up onto the box was my Quality Control Inspector, who frequently shows up while I'm working and insists on SITTING ON WHAT I'M WORKING ON. She sat up there and gave herself a wash until the heat from the lights forced her to look for somewhere a little cooler. I had fully anticipated her to fall into the box as the velcro gave way, but the seams all held up nicely. But come winter, I'm certain that this will switch to being a cat box rather than a photo box:)There are not many issues!Black hook and loop tape is used to close the box's sides. This makes sealing the box really simple, and the tape is also incredibly strong (see Quality Control inspection above.) It's black, though, and the box's sides don't extend past the edges. This results in the reflections and the edges of images having black lines. By placing the sides right at the margins of the velcro, I was able to make the background almost too broad for the bottom of the box, which helped to slightly alleviate the problem. I then carefully lift the background and place it above the velcro line. It has aided, but not totally solved, the issue. The backdrop ultimately becomes more noticeable as a result of working in the box, and it never completely hides the velcro anyhow. There would be no issue at all if future production could incorporate a small flap of the silver lining material that would slip down over the bottom velcro edging. The diffuser cloth has torn in one corner since it is lightweight and could not withstand how hard the hook and loop tape kept it in place. This little problem is due to the hook and loop tape's durability. Quick patch with tape, but if the diffuser fabric sustains this kind of damage after only a few hours of use, I'll occasionally have to replace it.The diffuser flap must be taken off in order to take pictures from the top, as another reviewer pointed out. This also necessitates some box disassembly, which is a hassle (and leads to extra handling of the fabric, which tore it, as per above.) I've discovered that this may be fixed by simply holding my palm over the item's top, below the diffuser, and taking pictures with my free hand. I was surprised to see that, when performing this, my hand did not appear in a reflection on higher surfaces. Could this be because the light and diffuser are immediately above my hand? However, it didn't work with a particularly shiny wooden humidor, which reflected my hand, the LED lights shining through the diffuser, and the previously mentioned black lines on the sides. This small hack has largely been successful. In conclusion, a terrific photo box that is affordable, easy to set up, and simple to use. Very happy.

AmazonBasics Portable Foldable Photo Studio Box with LED Light - 25 x 30 x 25 Inches Review:

Even though this portable studio was expertly built, you still need to utilize it correctly. People are obviously not following instructions, based on the volume of complaints about the backdrop crease. Unfortunately, the manual configuration of ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation that is described on the website but not in the instructions booklet is what you need to do in order to adjust your camera profile to the suggested specifications. This gives off the ideal quantity of light to expose the subject and white out the background. If you look at the example photos, you can see that individuals are using an automatic camera profile, which exposes for the white background but turns it a murky off-white or grey, making the shadow of the backdrop fold very obvious.I concur with all of the positive aspects of this picture studio, and I'll list the negative aspects instead:- no further colored backgroundsdespite setting the white balance for 5500-5600K, I get a slight greenish tint that needs to be corrected for (could just be my camera). - opaque sides, you can't use additional lighting to come in from the sides. - for the price, throw in a cheap reflector to help bounce some of the light around inside. - I think this is because the LEDs are not dimmable.Despite what I would like to see added, I find that what is supplied is more than acceptable for the price of this portable studio. Furthermore, the simplicity and ease are unbeatable, especially if portability is crucial.

SAMTIAN Photo Light Box, Portable 16x16x16 Inches Photography Studio Light Box Shooting Tent Table Top Photography Lighting Kit with 6 Background Papers and Brightness Dimmer for Photography Review:

I needed this for my business exactly! My images before and after purchasing this light box show a remarkable change! I constructed a DIY light box (literally a box, albeit an Amazon box LOL) since I had been fighting for months to get clear, bright shots of my products in different settings. However, it was really difficult to set it up and get the lighting perfect. I went to Amazon and decided to buy one after giving up completely on attempting to take beautiful shots one day. After reviewing a lot of options, I'm glad I chose this one. The two images show the package both before and after purchase. You can see that the colors are darker and more subdued in the shot on the left, which was taken using my temporary box instead. Since this light box was used to shoot the photo on the right, the colors are more accurate, vibrant, and gorgeous! I took both pictures with my iPhone 6S. I appreciate being able to rotate the lights to provide the ideal illumination for a particular product, and the box was simple to set up. I have so far only utilized the lights' brightest setting, but it's wonderful to have the dimmer available in case I need it. I believe that the front flap, which has a hole to shoot through, is quite vital. Without the flap down, I attempted shooting pictures, but they weren't as brilliant. The lighting is greatly improved by the reflective fabric walls. I primarily sell my handmade canine creations online since, as we all know, "a picture is worth a thousand words" when shopping online. Since employing this light box for my product photos (who knew?! ), my sales and views of my products have grown dramatically. Simply fantastic!

ESDDI Photo Studio Light Box 24"/60cm Adjustable Brightness Portable Folding Hook & Loop Professional Booth Table Top Photography Lighting Kit 156 LED Lights 4 Colors Backdrops Review:

I want to start off by stating that I am an entrepreneur and I enjoy making money online. In reality, I'm currently an eBay seller. Your product will be more visually appealing to customers if you use this Light box. Although I believe you can use your smartphone if you can manually modify the settings, the photo was taken using a DSLR camera.Benefits: This might significantly increase your online sales. It has several background colors, is simple to set up, and folds up well (white, gray, black, and beige)Cons: When I first acquired this lightbox, it was difficult to find the proper camera settings, therefore I wish it had something to help me understand how to use it.The background should have covered the entire lightbox, but that's not a big concern because I can crop my image.Additionally, I wish it were less expensive; in my opinion, it is expensive, but if you truly need it for your online store, buy it because they aren't all that inexpensive.

DUCLUS Mini Photo Studio Light Box,Photo Shooting Tent kit,Portable Folding Photography Light Tent kit with 40pcs LED Light + 6 Kinds Color Backgrounds for Small Size Products Review:

I'm totally stunned! Simply said, I'm blown away by this bright photo box.I in with very little expectation, fully anticipating disappointment and returning it. For $15, I decided it would be worth a shot.I'm happy I did.Despite being made entirely of plastic, it assembles very easily and is robust enough for the job. The LEDs, which are great, had the potential to make or break this. Exceptionally bright and with the ideal color temperature for photographing objects with realistic color. The fact that they have a high CRI rating (color rendition index), which is what makes images look good, further demonstrates their great quality. The included background pieces are adequate and not very noteworthy, but I enjoy the variety of colors and how simple it is to change them. You need this if you enjoy photographing models or if you sell on eBay. 10/10 would repurchase.

Photo Studio Box, FOSITAN 16x16 inch Table Top Photo Light Box Continuous Lighting Kit with 3 Tripods, 2 LED Ring Lights, 4 Color Backdrops & a Cell Phone Holder for Photography Review:

I've always wanted a photographic studio box, so my partner and I launched a little business selling handcrafted religious items. I tried to make my own off of a YouTube video, but it didn't work out as I had hoped. So I made the decision to order one online, and I'm happy to report that it is a great product. The backdrop fabric is a little wrinkled, but that is a simple fix with a warm iron. Everything else is as described in the product description. I've taken a number of images of the things we made, and they turned out perfectly. The box is the ideal size, and the lifting is excellent. To use with a mobile phone perfectly. And our little dining table can accommodate it well.Highly suggested for anyone interested in shooting images of little objects!I do have to point you that, just in case, you don't have a professional camera for capturing pictures, you also need to experiment with your phone's camera brightness.

Neewer 24x24 inch/60x60 cm Photo Studio Shooting Tent Light Cube Diffusion Soft Box Kit with 4 Colors Backdrops (Red Dark Blue Black White) for Photography Review:

One of those transactions when you only get one star out of five and two stars out of five. I'll start by mentioning the aspect of this purchase that deserves five stars—the light box itself. Simply put, it is fantastic. When using color gels, it produces incredibly good gradients and has outstanding light diffusion qualities. When completely extended, the enclosure can accommodate easily photographing objects up to 40 cm in height. When you're through using it, it quickly and effortlessly compresses to storage pouch size (25 cm). It only takes a couple of folds and twists to get it back to pouch size for storage, but if you have trouble, I recommend watching the brief YouTube video for this particular product. Any soft-sided light box that makes use of the same kind of collapsible wire and fabric construction should also work with the YouTube instructions. Overall, I really appreciate how adaptable the light box is and how little storage room it requires.Giving them one point for the color backdrop that comes with this light box would be generous. Each background contains distinct, deeply machine-set wrinkles that are impossible to completely remove. I have carefully tried dozens of crease-removal techniques over the course of hours, but each one still has obvious crease lines that are permanent. I find these creases to be extremely disappointing, inappropriate, and clearly a manufacturing flaw because these backdrops are sort of sort of a necessary component for utilizing the light box to its best potential. You can use your photos right out of the box if you don't care how the background looks in them. If you want your images to seem professional, acquire this with the understanding that it will take a lot of time and work to make the backdrops even slightly usable. Consider folding a brand-new, crisp $1 note in half and straightening the crease to serve as a reference. Then you unfold it and iron it flat once again. The finished product is a flat dollar bill with a central fold that is permanently visible as a crease line. With the backdrops that are offered, you receive just that. In their reviews of this product, numerous other buyers have specifically mentioned this issue. These cloth backgrounds are folded with far too much mechanical pressure in preparation for packaging. This is undoubtedly for you if you want something that is ready to use right out of the box and don't care how your photos turn out. The fifth listing image for this item clearly displays the deep set creases I've mentioned. These color backdrops are composed of synthetic fabric, and they are permanently woven into it.I have three more weeks to determine if I want to return this damaged item for a refund or not. I need to get replacement backdrop material from a fabric store in order to make the most of this item. If purchasing the background cloth won't cost too much, I'll choose that option and maintain the otherwise highly functional light box.

EMART 14" x 16" Photography Table Top Light Box 52 LED Portable Photo Studio Shooting Tent Review:

I recently completed my first shoot with this unit. Here are some initial thoughts. It was simple to set up right out of the box. Less than two minutes passed. It only snaps together one way, and that manner is simple to understand. The patterned plastic floor mats are a blessing. They avoid the need to improvise some background inside the box and fit ok. The LED bars look to be securely fastened to the box. Some reviewers have expressed concern about them slipping off. Maybe the tape the manufacturer is using now is better?* It is difficult to place the box on a table close to a wall outlet. I STRONGLY advise utilizing a USB battery pack. This one works for me, if you don't already have one for your cell phone: Power Bank Aibocn 10,000mAh External Battery Charger for Apple Phone and iPad with Flashlight Upgraded Samsung Galaxy Smartphones and Tablets* For handheld shooting, the LEDs offer more than enough light. An 18% gray card suggested f4 at 1/60, which was OK with the camera at ISO 200. * Which leads us to the kit's ridiculous tripod. It is disposable. It would be wiser for the set to not include the tripod and charge $1 less. For someone who uses a smartphone and a good tripod, the phone holder might be helpful. When everything was finished, packing up was quick and simple, and practically everything fit back into the original box.Since I live in the desert and everything there is beige, I decided to buy this light box. Walls, houses, gravel (there is no grass), everything is beige. When I tried to photograph some highly polished silver jewelry, I discovered that the jewelry was always reflecting some beige substance and turning the silver into gold. That box put it right.

SLOW DOLPHIN Portable Photo Studio Box for Jewellery and Small Items Portable Folding Photography Studio Box Booth Shooting Tent Kit(2x20 LED Lights 6 Colors Backdrops) Review:

The idea behind this portable lightbox appeals to me. It could use some fine-tuning, like with most things. Use this little box for jewelry, miniature models, etc. Greater trinket boxes (6" in length) were even too enormous, in my opinion, to be used in this lightbox without causing too much interference. There won't be a need for extra illumination because the LED lighting is so bright. You can choose which led bar is on or have both lit simultaneously. This was useful since, when both LED bars were lighted, some shiny things picked up the bulb glare regardless of where they were put (see pic example). Make sure not to overamp your USB cords and blow the LEDS when locating your power supply. These LED bars draw 1 amp. My setup consists of a 2.4 twin port USB wall hub and two common 10 foot micro USB wires. When thin plastic sheeting is folded and snapped into place, the result is a sturdy box (similar to the novelty origami/puzzle lampshades that were fashionable a few years ago). Sturdiness won't be a problem as long as you're not being rough. Compared to other companies' magnet closures, snaps are a superior improvement. By "hanging" onto tiny cut "pegs" on the back plastic panel, the backgrounds are fastened. Backdrops are okay—not my preferred material and the texture will undoubtedly show up in photos—but they don't appear to attract lint, hair, or other debris too quickly. The top "circle" for firing overhead is, um, useless? It is simply a disk made of the same plastic that is loosely placed over the camera hole. This disk, in my opinion, serves no purpose if your circle becomes bent or distorted because it allows for light leakage. I took a front photo with and without the disk in place, and there was no change. Having said that, I had turned on both LED bars. When only one bar is present, there can be a minor difference. Having to put up larger, more appropriate light boxes or tents takes less time using this method, but depending on what you're taking, the time saved might not be worthwhile. Overall, it serves the purpose for which I purchased it nicely (macro shots and small jewelry photos). It's not a horrible setup by any means, and it adds to my arsenal of photography equipment, but I won't be abandoning or neglecting my real light box any time soon. Given five stars because, although being rather "gimmicky," it does what it is advertised to do, the price is reasonable, and it is simple to use.

PULUZ Mini Photo Studio Box, 20cm Portable Photography Shooting Light Tent Kit, White Folding Lighting Softbox with 20 LED Lights + 6 Backdrops for Product Display Review:

This is far more durable than I anticipated. Everything fits in the bag that comes with the light, and it works just perfectly. The backdrops are made of a fabric-like substance with visible texture, but I don't think this is a huge concern. The backdrop bulks up on the sides due to the snaps at the bottom, creating an uneven surface that does appear in photographs. I'm not yet certain how I'm going to fix it.
