Since I teach junior high, you could anticipate that I sharpen a LOT of pencils. I bought this sharpener, and for the first 50 or so pencils, it worked perfectly. However, after that, it suddenly stopped operating as if its life had just ended. It would not switch on or do anything. So I graciously asked for a replacement, and I received one almost quickly. It was like magic; I sent the request, and before I had a chance to return the depressingly dead sharpener, a new, shining one had shown up. I was shocked. So, after plugging in my brand-new, upbeat sharpener, a student approached me and wanted to use it to further her studies. I graciously accepted, happy to have given my students the tools they needed to succeed. I asked my daughter's first-grade teacher how I might make her life simpler, and she suggested that I sharpen some pencils for her as it takes a lot of time and she dislikes doing it. I was surprised when the first gallon-sized zip lock bag of 100 pencils arrived at my house after I had joyfully consented. I borrowed a manual pencil sharpener from a buddy who used to be a teacher because my electric sharpener was inadequate. A second bag of pencils was brought home by my daughter a few weeks later. At Target, I purchased an electric pencil sharpener. I couldn't even get through the first 20 minutes because it was so bad. I was aware that I required a device with a very large holder for the shavings so I wouldn't have to dump them continually and that I preferred anything that plugged in to one that used batteries. I chose this one after asking around and reading reviews, and I'm very pleased I did!It takes just a few seconds to quickly sharpen each pencil to perfection. You don't waste pencils or have to take the pencil out to check if it's finished because the blades retract and stop sharpening when the pencil is sharp. The bin is generously sized to handle extremely large batches at once, and despite my concerns, I haven't had any overheating thus far. When I was sharpening some of the thicker starter ticonderoga pencils in addition to some regular sized pencils, the various sized pencil holes came in helpful. I didn't notice that it was glued to my kitchen counter until I was ready to move it, but it was a pleasant added bonus! I was a little wary before making a purchase after reading other reviews that talked about an unevenly sharpened point (one side sharp lead exposed, the other side still wood). When I first started using it and was preparing to pack it up and return it, I also had this experience. The pencil will end up with a very sharp (and balanced) point if you hold it with a somewhat slack grip and allow it to rotate freely in your hand as the blades "catch" on the areas with the highest resistance on all sides. The result is a point that is only useful on one side if I hold the pencil firmly enough to prevent rotation. Because I've never had to do that with any other fixed sharpers, allowing the pencil to rotate in your hand doesn't feel completely natural, but it's simple to get used to. It's possible that the remedy would just apply to my situation, but I suspect that many others with the same problem were too eager to give up, as I nearly was.Additionally, I appreciate how "old school" this seems because every time I use it, I'm reminded of using almost the same kind of sharpener in elementary school. Also a great price.The machining does feel a little flimsy (which, I suppose, is reflected in the price) and it's a little difficult to install using the screws provided (tip: I used longer screws that I had laying around and I also found that removing the metal housing while installing is crucial to allow the angle of your screwdriver or drill to drive the screw in correctly). These factors are the reasons why it only has 4 stars instead of 5 stars.

My kids are big fans of this sharpener. It sharpens quicker and more effectively than my desk sharpeners. I used to have my biological kids use my heavy duty pencil sharpeners in my classroom to sharpen 10 pencils about every two weeks. In the interim, they would use their little pocket sharpeners. That wasn't very successful. Sharpened pencils were usually in short supply for our homework and art projects. My three-year-old is precocious and far too brazen for her own good, so I was most concerned about the danger an electric sharpener posed to her. The opening for the pencil is too small and too deep for her little fingers anyway, but my husband and I did find a position on top of our tallest bedroom dresser where we could put the sharpening. This is a relief for parents who are prepared for the worst, like us, and for my older children who need it. I would also use this with my students in the classroom, but in a place with less traffic or use ( like in an art or writing center or at my guided small groups table). The shards reservoir is little and would need to be dumped frequently because it is smaller than a typical classroom, but it is just as potent as the larger one.
