Best Packing Tape in 2020

Gorilla Heavy Duty Packing Tape with Dispenser for Moving, Shipping and Storage, 1.88" x 25 yd, Clear, (Pack of 1) Review:

60% of the time I spend packing is trying to scratch up that re-stuck end of the packing tape roll! It drives me crazy and makes the whole process more frustrating. This tape is several times thicker than anything else I've tried, so it stays firmly in the dispenser, never re-sticks to the roll, cuts like a breeze, only requires one swipe to hold the heaviest boxes -- it's the absolute best hands down. Will save you many times its cost in your time and frustration. Totally worth it!! I'll never buy another brand.

Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packaging Tape, 6 Rolls with Dispenser, Clear, 1.88 inches x 800 inches, 1.5 inch Core, Great for Packing, Shipping & Moving (142-6) Review:

This is fairly standard & a good product. Just note these are the SMALL rolls... which isn't that clear from the pic (or estimating how much 800 inches is in your head). I have posted a picture comparing the small rolls (22 yard) to the big rolls (56 yard).

This 6-pack lasted through two home moves with 30-40 boxes that I packed, often taped with 3 strips on each side (due to some boxes being used / weak). And, there were still two rolls left. So, that's about how much you can expect them to last if you're using it for moving. I think it's a good deal. The tape quality is great - no issue there at all.

When you buy these individually at a drugstore, the price is double. I just got tried the "noise free" ones on amazon, and those are great! They're at the other link (a little more expensive, but if you hate the tape screech noise... check it out). Scotch Sure Start Shipping Packaging Tape with Refillable Dispenser, 1.88 in x 38.2 yd (3450S-RD) (These are 38.2 yard on the larger roll - just less tape than the normal large roll).

Edit 2017: I just moved again. I had 20 boxes and used all 6 rolls. They went very fast. Something changed here. There's no way these have as much tape as they did in 2015 when I made it through 2 moves and still had tape left over (and used more boxes). I haven't looked into pricing but the larger rolls might be a better idea.

Scotch Tough Grip Moving Packaging Tape, 1.88 in. x 22.2 yd, 1.5 in Core, 6 Rolls with Dispenser per Pack, Tough grip on all box types including boxes made with 100% recycled fibers(150-6) Review:

This tape is the one you want if you are packing for a move. It sticks well, is much thicker than others., easy to dispense and apply, and you won't waste much with it folding on itself and such. Compared to a role we got from U-haul that they said was for packing and shipping, this Scotch tape is way better. The U-haul tape was super thin, wrinkled too easily and was harder to dispense (and thus I wasted more).

Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packaging Tape, 2 x 800 - Clear (3 Tapes) (1, Clear) Review:

Shipping tape is a necessity in the Amazon era, but grocery and drugstores markup the price.  And, thanks to a certain online retailer, I avoid department stores so guess where I purchased it?  I chose the smallest amount, which includes three rolls and dispensers.  This tape sticks to boxes and works well for packing, moving and yes... returning items to Amazon.

We have all struggled when the tape sticks to the roll even when we take precautions.  This has been a frustrating flaw with Scotch Packaging tape since I can remember and they haven't fixed the problem.  That is my one complaint, and that is why I give this tape four and not five stars.

Scotch Sure Start Shipping Packaging Tape, 1.88 x 38.2 Yards, 2 Rolls and 1 Dispenser (3450S-2-1RD) Review:

Just an FYI in case anyone cares:

The 2 pack with dispenser is actually the LARGE diameter, not the small diameter rolls/dispenser that fit neatly in the palm of your hand. Obviously, it may not matter to anyone, but the rolls are a little unwieldy with this type of dispenser. For whatever reason, the strip of tape doesn't stay up by the serrated teeth (which is where it should be) so it constantly flops down and gets stuck to itself, or the sides of the dispenser....In contrast, the small, palm-sized dispensers are completely fluid and easy to maneuver.

Grizzly Brand Clear Packing Tape Refill Rolls for Shipping, Moving, Packaging - True 2 inch x 65 Yards, 2.8mil Thick, 12 Rolls Review:

I package and ship every day. I've used many different brands of tape. I'm a tape expert.

Positives of this tape:
Crystal clear tape - shows labels perfectly for scanners
The adhesive does seem quite strong
Outstanding price for square foot

Negatives of this tape:
The thickness is ok for small light weight packages but I would not feel good about shipping out heavy packages with this tape. 2.8 mil is not ideal. 3.1+ is so much better.
The tape is slightly stinky. I've had other brands (will be mentioned below) that don't stink.

I ran out of Duck's HP260 which is the Mercedes Benz of clear tape. That tape has the best adhesion, thickness, no stink, of any tape I've used. Another tape that I've used on Amazon that was great was Sparco Sealing Tape Heavy Duty (search for "60041" on Amazon). That isn't as good as Duck's tape but it just below it. Those tapes ARE more expensive than this tape.

This Grizzly brand tape is probably comparable to something like Scotch's packaging tape. Again, I'll use this tape but for certain instances. Packages that weigh quite a bit or packages with items that are valuable (high priced items) I'll feel more comfortable using another tape. I put this tape on my tape dispenser right after my Sparco ran out and I could feel the difference in thickness instantly. I was a bit disappointed. Not in the Grizzly Brand or the Amazon listing, but in me not realizing that this tape wasn't as thick as the Sparco. User error by me!

Duck HD Clear Heavy Duty Packing Tape Refill, 6 Rolls, 1.88 Inch x 54.6 Yard, (441962) Review:

For a lot of people, this will be good tape. It's better than stuff like the U Line 2.0mil tape as this tape is 2.6mil. It will also be way better than the economy or basic versions of Duck shipping tape, and better than the basic cheapo tape offered by some industrial suppliers. Where it falls short is if you are used to the Duck EZ Start tape, it's usually found at places like Wal-Mart. The ez start is just as strong, but isnt as grabby or noisy, it's easier to control how much tape you want to pull off and it comes off smoothly. I would also say 3M shipping tape is better than this HD stuff, but 3M is astronomically expensive.

Also, if you use the plastic style dispensers that come with some 3M or Duck tape combo kits, the 109 yard rolls of this will not fit those, it will only fit a tape "gun" style dispenser. If you are using one of those, no big deal, and the 109 yards are a better value, plus less having to change rolls of tape in the middle of what you are doing, just be aware, that's the only type of dispenser that the large rolls are compatible with.

Scotch Heavy Duty Shipping Packaging Tape, 1" Core, 1.88" x 19.4 yd, (142-700-H) Review:

When it works consistently you just keep going back too it. reordering it again and again. It’s easy pulling from the roll. The cut is always clean and quick. Sticking Power is really good. If needed you could pull it off but not easily. This package tape is great for any outgoing mail you might have, especially boxes. Five Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!!! Update (11 November 2019) just received more tape, it’s perfectly suited for what I’m using it for.

PERFECTAPE Heavy Duty Packing Tape 6 Rolls, Total 360Y, Clear, 2.7 mil, 1.88 inch x 60 Yards, Ultra Strong, Refill for Packaging and Shipping Review:

This is tape. Well, amazon bothered to send me a (probably automated) request to write a review, and i guess it’s fair enough to let you know this is good, standard clear packing tape. It forms a strong layer to seal my packages, and to hold them closed in case of rough handling. It sticks well to the cardboard boxes that i use, mostly reused amazon boxes :-). I have a simple red plastic manual dispenser with a cutting edge, not a fancy tape gun, and so i appreciate that this seller tells you the diameter of the roll. These fit my cheap dispenser perfectly. I can write on it with a sharpie. I dont know what else to tell you. Tape is tape. There is nothing wrong with this tape. This is good tape! Ok, i can think of one caveat. While i was buying this, i was going to send some to my sister in florida. She said she doesnt need this much at a time, and said that (any) tape just doesnt keep well in florida heat and humidity, so dont send this many rolls to your sister in florida. Did i blather on too much? Thank amazon for asking for my review. Of tape.
