If wood is too old, it may not burn as well. The wood may be too dry, or it may have started to rot.
Stacking firewood is the best way to dry it. Piling firewood leaves it more susceptible to rot and pests.
The Amish have a unique way of stacking their firewood. They start by creating a foundation of logs, then they stack the rest of the wood on top of that in a criss-cross pattern. This ensures that the firewood is stable and will not topple over.

I have five of the 8 foot log racks, plus I recently brought in a second 4 foot log rack. The 8 foot log racks have been outside for 4 to 8 years and are constantly exposed to the elements. While some of the older ones are gradually losing their glossy appearance, they continue to hold the wood with no issues. With all the firewood we use in the winter, a second unit will help the original 4 foot log rack, which has been on my covered front porch for at least three years. The assembling process simply required a few simple tools and a short amount of time. Before hand tightening any of the nuts or bolts, I discovered that inserting all of the bolts allowed for a quicker and easier installation. I then used a 14mm wrench and a medium/large phillips head screwdriver (a medium or large screwdriver would have also worked) (or socket). It would have been possible to use a 9/16 wrench or socket with a little extra play. Although an adjustable wrench or a pair of pliers may have also been used, a specific size wrench or socket makes the task simpler. However, most homes already have all of these items and can utilize them for assembly (I think over the course of time I have used the various combinations). One person can easily move the units because they are light in weight, yet it is simpler to move the 8 foot units with a second person simply because they are more cumbersome to move.To prevent the 8 foot ones' feet from burying themselves in the earth, I placed them outside in the yard on top of scraps of wood. I put scraps of composite decking on the ones on the front porch so that if the bottom plastic covers did break, they wouldn't touch my porch. But I don't have any issues with them.In conclusion, would I repurchase them? AND I HAVE, yes.

I can use this to cover my logs just well. My excellent, well-seasoned wood was becoming soggy even with the ugly blue tarp I had initially placed over them (it's been a very rainy fall!). This worked quite effectively. When I need more logs, it's simple to get to them, yet even in the wind and rain, the door stays closed. The basic black is lovely and neutral, making it less offensive than the blue tarp, which is the nicest part! very content

The only reason I gave this a 4 instead of a 5 is because A) the bolt-nut package did not come with lock-washers. For metal to metal fastening, these are ESSENTIAL. It is now as solid as it can be because I had some that fit perfectly. The assembly diagram also said that the "large bolts" were on the bottom and the "small bolts" were on the top. I had to remove the lengthy bolt and reinstall them on the top rack because the directions were reversed. Not a deal breaker, but inconvenient none the less. I'd advise everyone who enjoys fireplaces to try this. The tools are very well-made and have a nice appearance.

The very robust Panacea Deluxe Outdoor Log Rack is 4' wide, 4' high, and 14" deep "deep. Every winter, we order one or two cords of wood and store it away from the home. But in my family, going out to the wood pile turns into a game of rock-paper-scissors when it's snowing to see who will carry in the next load. I got this holder so I wouldn't have to go outside in the cold and snow to get wood for our fireplace before storms or family nights in.The fact that the box was rather hefty when it arrived attests to its high quality. Assembling it is so simple that the assembly instructions are essentially unnecessary. The overall holder is really strong when put together. The holder's depth is ideal for the pre-split wood we purchase. Although it is 4' tall, the overall stacking height is a little lower because the bottom is only around 4' tall "in order to provide adequate ventilation. Make cautious to comparison shop because some stores sell the rack itself for a fair price but then charge exorbitant delivery costs, which is what we paid (around $50 with shipping). In conclusion, I advise using this rack to store a little quantity of wood.

Well-built and pleasing to the eye. Within two shipping days, it was delivered, and it was retaining my split wood. Two eight foot pieces cut to four feet high were used as uprights, and eight stainless steel screws were used in each to secure them in place as holes in steel were drilled into each support to secure in place. The base was constructed using an eight foot long, 2x4x8 foot long piece of treated lumber. The fittings were then screwed into place. After slicing and placing the timber, it took me less than 30 minutes to put everything together. To keep the bottom of the rack off the ground and let air to flow, cement blocks were used to raise it off the ground. Splitting the wood for stacking took a little longer. This product is suggested. For the next year, I plan to buy at least two additional sets. Nothing compares to being able to create the rack of the desired size. Your wood should be weatherproofed and covered with a tarp. Very happy with this purchase. If you don't have a saw, have lumber cut for you by home building supplies.

The log rack is excellent. I live in a cold climate, and this cover's material and workmanship more than hold their own. The material remains flexible even at temperatures below zero and DOES NOT CRACK! The straps that hold it to the log rack are also excellent. In addition to additional buckles for opening the front to reach the wood, there is a buckle for each corner. The broad and many velco strips on the front of this Rack Cover ensure that it will remain in place during severe snowfalls while still being quite accessible. To everyone, I would unquestionably suggest this cover! Bravo to SONGMICS for a top-notch offering.

Even though the product name plainly indicates "20-Inch," I must not have a good sense of scale because I was taken aback by the item's size. I was on the fence about choosing the 20-inch version over the 40-inch version, and I'm very glad I did. The 40-inch would have been too large for the room; this one is the ideal size to sit indoors close to our wood stove.I was once more quite aback by how much wood the log hoop can truly hold after it was put up. We use a log tote (Panacea 15251 Canvas Log Tote, Black) to bring in firewood, and it takes two trips for the tote to fill the log hoop completely. The hoops are stable and stand up well; we haven't had any issues with it falling over or anything of the sort.

two 12 ft. Shelterlogic firewood racks were bought. Product was delivered in two days (not from Amazon.) The firewood racks are of good craftsmanship. Both units came with one additional bolt, nut, and two extra washers, so all the hardware was there and ready for assembly. Within ten minutes, the assembly can be finished due to its simplicity. Although the strength, accuracy, and stability of the Woodhaven firewood racks (which I also own) are unmatched, the Shelterlogic rack's quality isn't even close, but the 12 foot Shelterlogic firewood rack's price to quality ratio is unquestionably great. The 15 1/2 inch breadth of the Shelterlogic rack is one aspect I dislike (compared to the 14 inch width of the Woodhaven racks). Although the wider rack would, in theory, provide more stability, I prefer the 14 inch width. The somewhat narrower rack supports uneven or smaller-sized logs. In any case, the racks must have a sufficient and weather- and ground-appropriate foundation or base to prevent sinking or tilting, which could cause the rack to topple over when completely laden. The rack has a partial cover that is perfect for properly aerating the firewood.

Despite being rather nicely manufactured, the product had a few defects. My 4-foot wood pile stand can use it. The material is waterproof and reaches the ground completely. There are several threads that are hanging in places where they shouldn't be. The zippers don't even work (one side is several inches higher than the other). Additionally, there seemed to be a tiny hole at the top that was covered by some hot glue (lol). In any case, altogether, it's adequate for the cost. It is outside in my backyard, and I don't believe anyone will be paying it close attention when a campfire is going on. The logo is centered and reasonably sized. The 4ft stand logo is visible in the stock shot, and it appears that the larger stand has the logo off to one side.I put two grommets to the bottom of each side using a grommet kit that I purchased. I worked on it for around ten minutes before attaching the cover to the base of the stand using zip ties. I saw in the reviews of the other products that their primary complaint was that there was nothing to fasten the cover to the stand. Issue is resolved. The wood is accessible and is kept dry by the lid.
To keep firewood dry outside, you need to cover it. You can use a tarp, a piece of plywood, or anything else that will keep the rain and snow off of the wood. If you have a lot of wood, you may want to build a small shed to keep it in.
If you plan on burning wood to stay warm this winter, now is the time to start stockpiling firewood. But if you don't have a lot of space, or if you live in an apartment, you might be wondering how to store firewood outside. One option is to build a simple firewood rack. You can find plans for these online or at your local hardware store. Be sure to choose a spot that's close to your home and out of the way of foot traffic. Another option is to purchase a firewood storage shed. These are available in
A cord of wood is an amount of firewood that is cut to fit tightly into a cord-length space. The amount of wood in a cord can vary depending on the size and shape of the pieces, but it is generally accepted that a cord of wood contains 128 cubic feet of wood.
A 4-foot firewood rack can hold up to 1/4 cord of wood.
Rain won't hurt your firewood, but it will make it harder to light. If you can, cover your woodpile to keep it dry.
If you live in a dry climate, it is generally safe to stack firewood next to your house. However, if you live in an area with high humidity, it is important to stack the firewood off the ground and away from your house to prevent mold and rot.
