Can you have too many bird feeders in your yard?

If you live in an area where there are few natural sources of food for birds, then having multiple bird feeders can be beneficial. This is because it can provide birds with the food they need to survive and thrive. However, if you live in an area where there is an abundance of natural food sources for birds, then having multiple bird feeders may not be necessary.

Do birds tell each other where food is?

There is no definitive answer to this question, as there is no way to know for sure what birds are communicating to each other when they make vocalizations. However, it is possible that birds may tell each other about sources of food, as this would be beneficial information to share in order to increase the chances of survival for the entire flock. If food is scarce, birds that know where to find it would have a competitive advantage over those that do not, and sharing this information would help the entire flock to survive.

How do I keep the rain out of my bird feeder?

There are a few ways to keep the rain out of your bird feeder. One way is to use a feeder with a roof or awning. Another way is to place the feeder under an overhang or tree branch. Finally, you can make your own rain cover for the feeder using a piece of plastic or tarp.

How do I keep weeds from growing under my bird feeder?

You can prevent weeds from growing under your bird feeder by regularly removing them by hand, using mulch, or using herbicides.

Erva 5 Piece Feeder Pole Set with Twist-in Ground Socket - Made in The USA Review:

Was deciding between this item and a less expensive one. I'm pleased I held off on purchasing the less expensive model. This is incredibly robust and long-lasting. As I was putting the pole together, it occurred to me that a heavy duty pole is very necessary if you plan to lift anything particularly heavy very high because it must be able to support such loads. In my garden, it simply "corkscrewed" into the soil. Since it wasn't made of wood, I used it to make a bird home, which was actually quite hefty. I pretty much unboxed it in my backyard and got it erected in literally - maybe 5 minutes, screw mount and everything. It comes with all mounting tools, including screws. No directions are necessary. Also, the option to add or remove poles was quite convenient. I used all three poles to hike the house up over a fence at the first site I built it up, but I had to take out one pole to make it work in a new position. great possibilities for height. Would definitely repurchase; I'm pleased I didn't choose a cheap option that would have been flimsy and heavy in weight.

Stokes Select Quick Release Bird Seed Scoop Review:

I was looking for a funnel that I could use to fill bottles that were simple to pour from with the wild bird food that I buy in 40 and 50 pound sacks. The ideal answer is this seed scoop. Sunflower seeds can fit through the spout, which is about the right size to fit my bottle holes. A few people have expressed dissatisfaction with the quick release closure mechanism, but I have not experienced any issues with mine. However, you must make sure that the tab (or button) that opens and closes the spout is pushed as far in as it will go. I initially believed I was closing it, but instead it kept opening. I wasn't actually closing it all the way, though. To close it tightly, you need to push it just a little bit harder. When it locks, you will know it is completely closed since you can see it from the side. This quickly resolved my issue.

Deluxe Bird Feeding Station : Bird Feeders for Outside - Hang Multiple Feeders From the 4 Hangers, Bird Bath, Mesh Tray and 3 Prong Base to Bring Birds To Your Yard - 22 Inch Wide x 7 feet 8 inch Tall Review:

I appreciate the sturdy, appealing design, the numerous hangers, the height, and the four ground-pinning prongs (very important). The birds love it. At least twelve species visit me every day. I DIDN'T LIKE HOW BADLY PACKAGED IT CAME FOR SHIPPING. There is no manufacturing issue here. It is a well-made product. There was enough padding in the box to make it suitable for a retail shelf. Simply put, the box was shipped without any padding in an unpadded cardboard Amazon box. I have no idea who is to blame for the water dish's total destruction (and it was made of a fairly strong material). If Amazon doesn't improve its packaging, don't count on the water dispenser to survive the journey.

Woodlink NABAF18 Audubon Wrap Around Squirrel Baffle, 18-Inch - Black Review:

This is what we refer to as "the cone" at home, and it actually works! However, it only works if you take every precaution when placing your feeders: tall poles, squirrel-proof feeders (there aren't any, but when combined with other deterrents, they do assist), and no launching places nearby. Thanks to the cone, we were able to keep our feeders squirrel-free for months. Until my husband accidently placed a planter (with something else on top) too close to the pole holding the bird feeder, and then nothing. I watched the squirrel weighing his options from the kitchen window, enthralled. I could see geometry happening in his tiny ticking brain as he studied the problem like a 16th-century Italian engineer (da Vinci! ), charts, lines, bridges, and supporting structures appearing in his thoughts. Always, the squirrel prevails! As evidenced by the three pictures I'm uploading. However, I assure you that the cone had always operated flawlessly had it not been for that planter, which provided the squirrel with a launching pad from which to climb the pole past the cone. The cone is excellent and the greatest remedy for our squirrel issue. Brilliant. (We never would hurt the squirrels or any other nearby living thing. This is a kind, sweet, tasteless, brilliant technique to make life very difficult for those cunning rodents while preserving food and giving our birds—who have never been happier—peace of mind.)The cone is really sturdy, well-made, and incredibly simple to install. Our pole was a little too thin for the cone, but I fixed it by inserting a chopstick—yes, a leftover from one of our weekly Chinese takeout dinners—between the pole and the coupler of the cone. There are other, more elegant solutions, but I was feeling lazy that day, and the chopstick is still holding the whole thing together, steadily and unmoving.I will purchase another for my second bird-feeder pole and strongly suggest this product.[p.s. : I photoshopped the cone in the third image to remove the bird droppings from it as a courtesy to the general people! :)] The cone is black, however that photo does not accurately depict the color of the item; I am to blame.]

More Birds Replacement Feeding Port Flowers, 7 Count, Colors may vary Review:

One of the original yellow blossoms on my feeder was broken by me. While I was attempting to kill a very huge wasp that had landed on it, one of the small petals broke. My fault entirely. I ordered these because I was concerned that a broken blossom would cause the feeder to leak. Although the picture showed white flowers and it stated that the colors vary each order, I desired the yellow replacement flowers. Seven fresh white flowers arrived in a sealed bag for me. They have the exact same size and form as the previous blossoms. They were simple to install. Although I believe these are more attractive than the yellow blossoms, I was concerned that the hummers could stop visiting the feeder. That is not true. They are unconcerned. In fact, the white blossoms appear to draw them in even more, as my feeder gets visited by as many as 5 birds at once every few minutes and is empty out every two days.Even though these replacements are less expensive than a new feeder, I couldn't rationalize buying one when I only needed the flowers. I also now have 2 more blossoms. If you have the feeder that they fit in, suggest these. It's always pleasant to be able to repair a feeder with fresh components. The hue of the blooms wouldn't matter to hummers!

North States 2-Way Squirrel Baffle Review:

For the cardinals in my garden, I recently bought a large open hexagonal feeder. Even though I don't have squirrels, every morning the feeder was entirely emptied; not a single seed remained. I went outside at night one time in hopes of finding the answer since I believed that someone other than the birds was undoubtedly consuming the seed. Unexpectedly, a friggin RAT jumped onto the feeder from my wooden fence. It's a rat, so that's why this is very wrong, and how can he??? I believed the game was finished when I relocated the feeder about 7 feet from the barrier. Oh no, not at all—this rat was a fighter. The feeder was once more cleaned the following morning. It's now game on! Because I believed there was no way he could be leaping that far, I set up a night camera.Surprisingly, I was dead incorrect. This repulsive, hungry robber would finally propel himself with Herculean effort after about ten tries, grip the other side of the shepherd's hook, and laugh as he climbed to the feeder.Rat receives a 1 and Human a 0.I naively believed that I could outsmart a rat, thus there was no difficulty.I would so carry the feeder inside every evening after the cardinals had finished eating. But this wasn't just any rat, I must say. I began to speculate that it might have attended Harvard and earned a degree in human behavior. He merely began arriving earlier and made it clear to me who was in command.Rats: 2; people: 0.I then pushed the shepherd's hook away from the fence by about 15 feet, grinning triumphantly, believing I had won. Nope. The feeder is thoroughly cleaned once more the following morning. The camera comes out once more. The following morning, when I watched the film, I was astounded to see this disease-ridden, fleabag VARMIT perform the inconceivable. I'm quite sure he flicked me off at some point while he was climbing the little circular pole. HE WAS GOING Up A Pole!Rats: 3, people: 0.Now that it's personal, I don't like having the feeder in the middle of the yard and the fact that I haven't yet won any games. The fact that a rat is smarter than I am makes me feel pretty foolish. I pulled out a jar of Vaseline and oiled the pole like it was Mardi Gras on New Orleans' Bourbon Street. I laughed so hard because I knew I wouldn't lose again. When you see a rat climb to the very top of a pergola then fly down to the top of the feeder after sliding down the pole ten times, being overconfident can really set you up for a weeping session.Rats Laughing: 4, Humans Crying: 0.No, I'll murder a bird and sob even more. Poison? No, I'll kill a lot of birds and require assistance from experts. So let's travel to the magnificent country of Amazon to see the Wizard. To stop his aerobatic tricks and maintain my sanity, I bought this top as well as a metal baffle. I'm delighted to report that watching the tapes and witnessing the human finally triumph was nearly as pleasurable as devouring the entire cake. The feeder has returned to its starting point, and the rat has given up. (I hope!)Rat: To another team after being traded, Human: TOUCHDOWN!And I thoroughly liked devouring the entire cake.

Birdscapes Clear Window Feeder 348 Review:

On the bay window off the kitchen, I mounted this bird feeder. The birds had no trouble locating the feeder, and it was fascinating to watch them come and go as we sat down to dine. Sunflower seeds were utilized the first year I had this to draw cardinals. The feeder needed to be replenished pretty frequently, and that was the only problem I had. I used generic bird food from Home Depot for the second year that I owned the feeder. That manner, we attracted a wider variety of birds, but the feeder still needed to be refilled frequently. The birds devoured the food during our week-long absence because we were out of town. A mother bird also decided that the bird feeder would be a great place for her nest at this time. We initially thought it was fascinating to watch her construct the nest. She lay five eggs, and it was amazing to watch them hatch and give birth to baby birds. The issue is that baby birds create a massive mess. I had to remove bird droppings from the window after the youngsters left the nest and discard the feeder. Overall, though, it was a fantastic experience, and I'm happy that my little children and I were able to watch the babies hatch. The feeder is reasonably priced, so you can replenish the bird food supply. However, I don't believe I will wait until it is empty this time for a nest to form!

Gray Bunny GB-6844D Deluxe Premium Bird Feeding Station, 22" Wide x 91" Tall (82 inch Above Ground) Black, Multi Feeder Hanging Kit & Bird Bath for Attracting Wild Birds, Birdfeeder & Planter Hanger Review:

Our bird population is quite diverse, so feeding them has been an utter joy of discovery! The issue is that I had previously mounted our squirrel feeder and the bird feeders on the same tree using hooks. Therefore, the squirrels would begin hurling themselves onto the bird feeders to help themselves to the sunflower seeds when they had eaten all of their peanuts or became bored with their corn cobs, driving away all the birds in the process. My bad. That issue was immediately resolved by putting this feeding station many yards away from the fence and trees. But be warned—you will DEFINITELY want to combine this with a squirrel baffle! Given that squirrels can scale that pole with the same ease as a Tijuana stripper, I advise placing one at least 18" wide and 4' up from the ground on the station. I don't even care that I had to buy the baffle separately because this station has so many excellent bonuses. (A fantastic choice that completely complements this station is the Woodlink NABAF18 Audubon Wrap Around Squirrel Baffle.)I've kept two hanging feeders with sunflower and safflower seeds for the chickadees, titmice, cardinals, juncos, sparrows, and wrens all winter long on the top two big hooks. For the blue jays, cardinals, nuthatches, and the many various types of woodpeckers we have—hairy, downy, pileated, and northern flickers, to name just a few—two suet cakes fit wonderfully in the suet feeder! Additionally, peanuts are always available in the platform feeder for my favorite blue jays! Unrelated piece of advice: remove anyone from your life who accuses blue jays of being cruel. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life, and they are incorrect. Amazingly intelligent and fascinating are blue jays!I want to install a hummingbird feeder and a thistle seed feeder from the smaller hooks once spring and summer arrive. I might also put some fruit slices or nesting materials inside the suet feeder. Once the threat of freezing has passed, I might also add that bird bath dish, though I'm not sure it will hold up to a strong wind because the plastic dish is a little on the light side. It might be wiser to get a separate bird bath.Overall, I'm ecstatic with this great little feeding station, which has fed my diverse bird species well and kept them squirrel-free all winter. The squirrels now spend their time in their feeder, where they should be! Even though they may long for this station, the birds leave behind enough sunflower seeds for them to tidy up without having to make them uncomfortable by acting as their uninvited meal companions. Thanks to this feeding station, our backyard has become a wildlife paradise!

How do you protect the ground under a bird feeder?

You can protect the ground under a bird feeder by doing a few things. First, you can put a layer of mulch, rocks, or even a plant down. This will help to keep the ground from getting too muddy or dirty. You can also put a layer of newspapers or a tarp down. This will help to keep the ground from getting too wet. Lastly, you can put a layer of bird seed down. This will help to keep the ground from getting too dry.

How far from house should bird feeder be?

There is no definitive answer to this question as it depends on the type of bird feeder, the type of bird food, and the preferences of the birds in your area. However, as a general rule of thumb, bird feeders should be placed at least 10 feet away from any buildings or trees, and ideally 20-30 feet away from any busy roads.

Is it OK for bird feeders to get wet?

Yes, it is perfectly fine for bird feeders to get wet. In fact, many bird feeders are designed to be weather-resistant so that they can withstand the elements. However, if your bird feeder does get wet, be sure to dry it off before refilling it with food.

Should bird feeders be in the sun or shade?

If you are trying to attract a specific type of bird, research where that bird typically feeds and try to match the environment. For example, many birds that eat insects prefer to feed in more open, sunny areas so they can see their prey. If you are just trying to attract a variety of birds, then a feeder in both sun and shade will likely be successful.

Should bird feeders be taken down 2022?

It's up to the bird feeder owner! Some people take their bird feeders down in the spring or summer because the birds don't need as much help finding food. Others leave their bird feeders up year-round because the birds enjoy the extra food. There are pros and cons to both choices, so it's ultimately up to the bird feeder owner to decide what's best for their birds.
