Sincerely, I purchased two of these bells for my house, one for the entrance leading into the family room from the garage and the other for the front door. You see, the sixteen-year-old girl is starting to occasionally sneak out at night, and I still have two other adolescents. I bought it because I believed that a small "ding" while opening the door would be a welcome notification that someone was entering (or going). To make it work, I had to make a small alteration to the shape of it. It was simple to mount—just a few screws were required—even on a door with a metal finish. To get it just perfect, a bit more tweaking was necessary. The issue was that it never quite came together the way I wanted, if not exactly. Although it does have a delightful "tingle" when it rings, it hardly ever does so when OPENING the door. It needs that slight push on the frame in order to ring. I decided to keep it because it is still attractive and neither intrusive nor bothersome, but it won't ring unless the door is violently shoved open and stopped. I have no idea how store owners get the doorbell to ring when a customer enters. It just means someone is departing in my opinion.
