First of all, this is a genuine meter. A stupid cable tester, that is. in essence, a continuity tester. It checks for continuity between cable pairs. The end. Anyone who anticipates more than that will therefore be let down. You will be happy if you purchase it as is. This is one of the greatest cable testers I've used, and I've tested plenty of cheap and relatively costly ones. It is compact, well-made, and loaded with useful functions. It's handy that the remote block clips into the bottom. The display is quite useful and comprehensive. Many of my earlier test devices only had blinking LED lights for each pair. This display is a huge improvement. When there is a malfunction, it goes above and beyond and provides you with some basic diagnostic information. I've had this device for about 7 months and have had no issues. If it were lost or stolen, I would purchase a replacement.

Even though the tone generator was only connected to one of three lines in a box, I received signal on all three. In places where the lines are closely spaced, this is more obvious (at the box, of course). This confused me when I was in a small closet and the probe always detected a signal. Imagine my shock when I discovered that the line I was drawing from the box not only went UP to the ceiling, but also DOWN to the floor and off to the side! Whoops! It's not right, that! However, with a little perseverance and comprehension of what was occurring, I was eventually able to separate the different runs. The signal deteriorates faster on unconnected lines farther away from the box than it does on linked lines. I had to move far from the box and search for the line after making a few informed guesses about where it might be. I eventually located each line and followed them to their ends. It's a fantastic thing. The most brilliant vfl pen I've ever used. Because it is so bright, you can connect it to a cabinet and troubleshoot faulty splices in trays from five miles away in broad daylight. I purchase these four at a time for my business because we frequently require them.Look, it's no great issue if the cap slips off. Furthermore, compared to certain other Exfo models, the switch isn't as "pleasant." But all of that is simply noise. Why does it matter if the silly cap falls off? The item is still functional and costs $20. You have every right to purchase name brand VFL for literally hundreds of dollars. I'll keep buying them since they are valuable assets.Oh, and unlike with my other, more expensive ones, I'm not scared to lose this one. It happens; technicians may forget to plug it in or may leave it in the grass or a node. But hey, as I said, it only costs $20. Don't be a loser; just buy another one.

I required assistance in troubleshooting a home/home office Ethernet network that I had set up using 12 CAT6 lines of wiring. The Klein Lan Scout Junior caught my attention at first because it was less expensive and would have served my needs well. However, after doing some investigation, I learned that it had a shelf life of 5 years and was a sealed unit with non-replaceable batteries (not readily replaced). Not at all. Even though I don't use my tools frequently, I like them to last. Therefore, I took a look at the VDV Scout Pro 2, which was a bit more expensive but utilizes a regular, swappable 9 volt battery. Additionally, the VDV Scout Pro 2 does numerous other tests on various cable types. I can utilize that both now and in the future.So, how did it function? Super. It is easy to use. Within five minutes, I discovered two CAT 6 cables that were shorted, and it even indicated which end of the connection they were at. I'm very happy with how wonderfully it worked.I definitely could have gotten away with one of those red blinking LED sets for a lot less money. The Klein, on the other hand, gives you precise diagnostic data that make resolving cable problems a breeze. I'm not at all sorry I paid a few dollars more for this.

Now that I have read the directions and am aware of how to use it, this is a cute little instrument. Unfortunately, it lacks intuitiveness, and at first I believed it to be broken. It works, I discovered after finally giving in and reading the directions. But I don't think anything this simple should need instructions, especially because I've used a lot of things like this before.Trying to use it as a tone generator and probe was the toughest challenge. I turned on the receiver and set the emitter to "TONE" without first reading the instructions. The emitter had no lights, and the receiver was unable to detect any tones. Since this is a fairly simple process, I checked the batteries before assuming I must have a bad component. But before returning it, I read the directions and discovered that you need to set it to "SCAN" rather than "TONE" in order to utilize it as a tone generator. Since I don't need to trace lines very frequently, this still baffles me, and I have a feeling I'll forget about it and do it the same way the next time.I can't really complain too much because it does what it is supposed to do, replaces a number of other instruments I already own (special tone and probe, cable tester, tip/ring tester), and is reasonably priced.I only wish that the modes' labels made more sense.

I had fantastic success with a wire crimper from this firm, so I chose to utilize the same company when I was looking for a wire-tracer. They were more expensive than other brands, but as I've said before, once I find a company I like, I tend to stick with their products. Consequently, even though I can't compare this to the less expensive brands, I can say that I think the price I paid was well worth it, especially considering that it will replace three other tools that, 15 years ago, each cost twice as much as I'm paying for this one now.The benefits1) Clear and concise English paperwork; I can't express enough how important this is to me considering how commonplace it is for Chinese electronics businesses to get wrong. I can only comment on the quality of the English documentation because the document is multilingual.2) A robust, clear signal for tracing is produced by 9 volt batteries. The device this replaces was powered by a stack of the little watch batteries, which were more expensive to replace and frequently weren't items I kept "on-hand."3. Excellent sensitivity Jacketed wire was significantly quieter than open wire, which was rather loud. This is advantageous since it indicates that there is less tone bleed to surrounding cables. This was a serious flaw in my previous tool.4) Continuity testing makes use of an LED whose brightness alters in response to any impedance.5) The listening probe's built-in LED "flash light" is quite useful!1) Lightweight injection molding case is a drawback. I don't think this merits a star, but others might. I'm okay with injection molding for a tool that I only use a few times a year considering that a tool like this would have cost over $100 fifteen years ago. If you plan to use this frequently, covering the sides with Sugru will still be considerably less expensive than purchasing a comparable "pro" instrument.2) A connector that converts RJ11 to Coaxial would have been useful for wire-tracking Cable lines, but similar models did not come with one, so I can't dock a star for it. Making myself should be simple enough.In the event that you want to test cables linked via a patch panel, the single provided male/male RJ45 cable essentially serves as a gender changer. Since most patch-panel connections are female on both ends, my previous tool came with two of these, so having only one seems to be missing the point somewhat. However, as I mentioned with the coaxial connector, comparable equipment also only come with the one male/male cable. It's simple enough to perform the same task using a short Ethernet wire (just make sure you test the cable on its own first!).Depending on your viewpoint, say whether...No automatic cutoff. My previous tool had automatic power-off on both ends, which presumably significantly increased the life of the watch-style batteries, but it also never failed to go off right around the time I had crawled to wherever it was I needed to go to make the tracing! Therefore, using it unavoidably became a two-man job. Since this device runs on 9 volt batteries, you may simply replace the battery if you forget and leave it on (s).2) The battery cover is secured with a screw. It's definitely a good thing that the injection-molded housing is so lightweight because a clip-style would probably be very easy to break and/or lose, but changing the battery always involves one more step.Overall, I believe that this is the best tool for the task.PS: I've added an image that, unlike the others, displays the RJ45 male/male wire that is supplied.

For everyone else, the product appears to work nicely, however I seem to get very poor performance from the digital toner. The video demonstrates how you can find the cable simply by passing the room where it exits. In comparison to cat6, I can receive a signal when I'm approximately a foot away from the cable with cat5. I'm not referring to the analog toner; that function appears to be effective. The digital toner, on the other hand, appears to be promoted as having a signal pickup range of at least a few feet. My range is substantially smaller. renders a significant amount of this unit's capabilities ineffective. I'll probably try to exchange this for another, and if the replacement behaves in the same way, I'll return for a refund without a doubt. I haven't used any other toners, so I can't speak to how they compare in terms of performance. Tell me if I'm using it incorrectly if I am.1. Using the supplied wire, I plugged the toner into the cat 6 keystone jack.2. Accessed the picture of the probe with the radio waves emanating by rotating both the toner and the probe (the larger waves on the probe)3. While using the maximum volume, walk around. I can't do anything until I actually TOUCH the wire. This wire is contained in a bundle of around 30 cat6 cables.If the replacement is more effective, I will change this review.—— EDIT ——I'm happy to report that the one I received from Amazon overnight works significantly better. Now, the probe will detect the digital tone coming from a few feet distant. Every other aspect is excellent. Therefore, the lesson is to exchange your probe if it looks to be underperforming.

I don't think you can find a better testing tool for this pricing of $25. It is not worthwhile to save ten dollars and buy a less expensive tool because this accomplishes so much more than anything cost less. I needed to run about a dozen Cat 6 cables through my home and make a lot of patch cables, and this item was ideal for the job. The instrument may find a short circuit I unintentionally made as well as wires I didn't push down firmly enough.The toner component of the device, which I also tested out, performed admirably and made a loud noise when it was close to the wire delivering the signal. Additionally, the sensitivity adjustment on it was effective. Additionally, I enjoyed the LED light on the toner tool's end, which is useful for finding wires in dark locations.Last but not least, I particularly appreciate that it comes with the extra accessory with alligator clips so you may trace connections other than network wires. That's a tremendous plus in my book. The relatively outdated wiring in my 1960s-era home is a little strange. This will be really helpful as I need to trace part of it to understand why my light switches function (or don't function) the way they do.Buy this without a doubt if you are even slightly undecided about which tool to purchase and don't have (or need) to spend hundreds of dollars on an enterprise-grade tool from Fluke Networks, which I also have experience with. Even though it lacks the sophisticated electronics to assess your cable speed and signal quality, and even though it can't tell you how far away a wire break is if it detects one, most of that is not required for use in a home or small business. If the wire is broken or disconnected, at least it will let you know, and you can then go replace it (which, 99.9% of the time, merely entails redoing the punches on the patch panel or Keystone jack because we probably didn't punch it down well enough). For any quality cable, the likelihood of an interior break is almost zero. Only in a manufacturing facility did I ever require the "feet to break" option on the high-end testers, since occasionally someone would cut a wire with all the industrial equipment moving about, which is not typically a problem in homes or small companies).Last but not least, if you are concerned about the construction quality, don't be: I found this to be really sturdy. All of it is plastic, but it seems to be thick and of excellent quality, and the adjuster knobs all felt substantial. Really, I have no worries that it won't last for a very long time.

I have seen several of these items being sold for much more than they are asking. This item was reasonably priced, promptly arrived, and performed flawlessly. Even a lovely pouch is included with it.I used this program because I had nine separate Ethernet runs into a single area and was unable to identify which lines were malfunctioning. Using this program, I was able to identify the problem and determine where and which runs terminated. I was able to determine which wall plates I needed to change and which ends I needed to re-terminate using this tool.This is truly unbeatable for the cost.
