I made the decision last year that I was sick of having the dealer replace the oil in my Subaru Impreza. Around the time the dealer changed the oil, I drove the car 1000 miles before the "low oil" light appeared. I then took the car back to the dealer to determine whether they had a) either not fully topped off the car with oil or b) had used OEM oil that was of such poor quality that the car was burning it off too quickly. I vowed that I would handle the oil changes on my own car, thank you very much, and see if I had any evidence of oil consumption issues when their first words to me were, "we should do an oil consumption test" on the car I had bought from them no more than three months prior (with a head to toe pre-certified used car check).Given the alluring price, I instinctively sought for this oil first. I can list the following benefits and drawbacks of this oil:Cons: I change my oil every 5,000 miles with this because I have a long commute (1.5 hours/day) at high speeds (75 mph); I can tell when the oil is low or needs changing on my beloved Subaru and the 5,000 mile mark tends to be it. The price is excellent, especially for 0W-20; it is also carried at Wal-Mart for a similar price but otherwise 0W-20 remains difficult to find. Given the price, I'm not bothered.- Despite my reckless driving and my unpleasant commute, this oil maintains its quality over the period of one replacement with little degradation. I like that Wal Mart carries this even though I buy it from Amazon. I did have one instance where I added too little oil and could tell my Subaru was dragging a little. I pulled over, picked up a quart from Wal Mart, topped it off, and continued on my way with no issues. I usually add a little bit of oil around the 3,000-mile mark.Cons: Although it is absolutely pointless, it is difficult to see how much oil is left in the container in my dark garage. On the other hand, I have oil from a Castrol competitor, and because it is made of a lighter material, it is simpler to assess how much oil is supplied to the engine.In the future months, I'm intending to switch from my current oil to a more pricey product, and I'll update my review as necessary if I discover that it is significantly superior. I think this will perform quite similarly and cost about half as much.After applying more expensive oil, an update: I bought the more pricey 02-20 synthetic oil (approximately twice as much as this Castrol oil). Regarding performance, I saw no difference. My car, which I inherited at 120,000 miles, formerly experienced a large amount of piston slap when it was cold. As soon as it warmed up, it would go. Since my engine was "going on in years," I thought switching to synthetic oil would be an interesting experiment to see what all the fuss was about and if it actually improved engine longevity.I purchased some of this Castrol 5w30 full synthetic oil mainly because it is the factory fill for BMW and Triumph motorcycles. Maybe Castrol pays them to work at the factory, but hey, as long as the engineers are content, everything should be fine.The piston slap would disappear at the end of the driveway after the initial cold start, as opposed to most of the way to my destination. That, in my opinion, was a positive thing. When oil is cold, it is slipperier, performs better lubrication, and causes the engine to wear out less during cold starts. Brilliant.One day, a buddy of mine advised me that, if they satisfy the same API certification requirements, etc., "all synthetics are the same" and that I should simply get the least expensive one available. The oil I discovered was the cheapest and came from a firm whose name begins with "valv" and finishes with a "e," so I purchased it. Piston slap was returned. Although it wasn't quite as severe as when I was using dinosaur oil, it was still significantly worse.After only 3,000 miles, I changed back to this Castrol synthetic, and the engine now idles smoothly, has quieter valves, and is overall content. Come a frigid Monday morning, even after spending the weekend parked in the driveway, the oil will still be on the metal surfaces lubricating it even during early restart. This Castrol oil seems to want to "stick" to surfaces in the engine.I will continue to purchase Castrol for a very long time.

Could I buy this locally? Probably, however I haven't been able to find 10W-40 in many shops lately. since I was due for an oil change. I'm also buying from Amazon this time because I'm still having trouble finding this weight 10/40 or the 20/50 in my neighborhood stores, including Walmart, auto stores, and other places. Since the climate where I live has an average summer temperature of 115'F and fairly mild winters, the 20/50 would also work for me.

This is the BEST oil for Saabs, Subarus, and other forced induction vehicles that you can buy in the United States. Although it is advertised as a "HEAVY DUTY DIESEL OIL," don't panic, this only refers to the ADDITIVE PACKAGES that have been added to the motor oil. However, this oil works well on our turbocharged automobiles, even though diesel engines typically require considerably higher lubricity and wear protection than ordinary gasoline engines (glow plugs, carbon soot, etc.).The oil performs more like a "0-weight" oil than the specification of 5W-40 oil, so don't worry about it (such as the factory specs of my Saab and other newer turbocharged cars calling for Mobil 1 0W-30 or 0W-40). Compared to purchasing those tiny 6 pack bottles, this larger bottle is more affordable. Since Briggs has a solid reputation and a strong brand, I feel extremely confident using this oil. Although other of their products are more expensive, I thought this size was more economical.
