I gave it a test drive, and it appears to function as promised. We dug a hole close to the doctor and performed a "dry (fishless) run" to make sure everything was in order even though it wasn't yet cold enough to go outside. feels solidly built. The metal components are sturdy, and the plastic is also fairly robust. We anticipate this to continue (and will update if we discover differently).Now wishing for some actual fish this winter!UPDATE: Reducing by 1 star since we recently acquired a Fabrill Arctic Fire Tip-Up, which is much better, rather than because there is anything wrong with this (we still really like it). The Arctic Fire is slightly larger, comes with a brass spool, and has a metal hinge. Both are superb, but the Arctic Fire is a 5-star hotel, making this top-notch tip-up feel like a 4-star establishment.

This fishing combo's quality and efficiency completely astounded me. I didn't understand how a telescoping pole could still flex and whip, but I do now. This rod is a delight to cast when paired with the best, smoothest reel I currently own. The distance these small shrimp and light lures traveled from the shore to the deep channels astounded me (with no additional weight added). With this configuration, casting in the Gulf while seated low in my kayak is enjoyable. You need every edge you can get while your arms and shoulders are barely above the water. This is now my go-to friend while I'm kayak fishing offshore or taking a short trip; in fact, I use it every time I go out these days. Where doesn't matter. The small, portable box is great. It is always prepared because I tossed in a number of my favorite lures and rigs. We have a rainy season here in Florida, so if you don't have something to keep the rain off of your gear it just gets wrecked sooner or later. It takes some getting accustomed to to learn to palm the reel when dropping weighted jigs since they drop so quickly that it can backspool easily. You learn to palm the reel like you would when flyfishing. It takes some getting used to, but the upside is that, unlike the Dave Genz ice spooler, it can drop even the lightest jig without manually feeding the line out.

We made the decision to add another rod to our fishing armory because we are eagerly anticipating the upcoming fishing vacation. This time, it was decided that we needed something longer, and shortly after that, we discovered this long rod and reel set. Since this one was going to be fairly lengthy, we especially appreciate goods that take up little room while not in use. When the box finally arrived, we were quite eager to open it and discovered just how awesome this combo set is. After taking it out of the lightweight fabric storage/carrying bag, it is immediately apparent that this is a straightforward, heavy-duty rod. We did a few casts after removing the tip that keeps it compressed to give it a full once-over and were able to feel the incredible strength of this rod. It had a very excellent long reach and felt just as powerful as it appeared to be. The rod extended and collapsed quite smoothly in both directions. We next looked at the reel, which is equally as nicely constructed and of superior quality as the rod. Super smooth, simple to maintain as required. This combination set was practically designed to work together and enhance one another in a way that would set the pros apart and offer the beginner angler a significant advantage.
