The correct connection is made to each section of the jack that is divided by the thin, black insulator. You won't receive that connection if the jack is loose, which can result in a loss of power and quality and possibly even damage to your gadgets (i.e., your speakers).I gave this product four stars because I highly doubt I'll look elsewhere for another product if I ever need to order them again. I got this splitter so I could simultaneously use my PC's rear connection for powered external speakers and headphones. The headphones had a lot of static when they were plugged into the speaker's connector. The M/F connector is necessary for my headphones to connect to anything.
