The only reason you can tell it's there is because of the way light reflects off it in comparison to ordinary flooring. I expected it would get scratched after a few days because of the weight on my wheels and the displacement on the mat, but to the best of my knowledge, there were no scratches! This mat is quite well made. It is also quite large, so if you prefer to move around in your chair more, you are not restricted to a little area. Your chair rolls effortlessly once it is on the mat. My only gripe is that the website I ordered from misrepresented the fact that the item was packed flat. It needed to be laid out in the sun for it to become sufficiently soft to lay flat on my hardwood floor. As it is in a location with AC set to 70 degrees, it can flatten out after some time or when the temperature rises slightly. Due to comments about the edges curling, I wasn't sure if I should buy this product. When the mat was put on the hardwood floor, the two ends curled down (instead of up) because it had been packaged and rolled during shipping. According to the instructions, if you laid it down, it would flatten out after a day. It lies absolutely flat after I heated the two edges with a hair dryer for a few minutes. I discovered that the desk chair's ball-type rollers would have left marks on the mat and maybe the hardwood floor beneath it. Additionally, I switched out the ball rollers for double-wheeled ones because they protect the wood floor much better. I would suggest spending money on both the wheels and the mat.

The tapered edge is great since it makes rolling on and off so simple. As the desk was too heavy to lift, I merely trimmed 2 small sections to wrap around the legs because I didn't want one with the tab. Simple to cut with scissors, but unquestionably very strong. So, after using it at my home computer desk for almost seven months, I can attest that it has held up rather well. Despite everyday use, the slightly textured surface has held up nicely and barely shows any signs of wear.The only issue I have is that this mat's smooth side is SO slick that it can slide around on a laminate floor pretty easily. There were two different occasions when I moved into my new apartment and this chair mat was sitting in front of my desk without anything to hold it in place, such as a chair or an edge of some furniture. If I hadn't been able to call upon some dormant muscle memory from my old skateboarding days, I might have pulled an unintentional aerial pratfall akin to one of the Wet Bandits from Home Alone.The flip side of the aforesaid problem is that this mat is gentle on laminate and/or wood floors, making it a very durable mat in all other respects. Overall, it makes for a good chair mat. Because the bottom is smooth, it has some movement. Its extreme thinness is the only issue I have with it. Years ago, when I first purchased chair mats, they were much thicker and provided an additional layer of support for the floor. This one is far thinner than my other ones, but of course, this makes shipping it much simpler. This will be ideal if the main purpose of the mat is to shield your existing floor from the chair's casters.

I was about to give up when I was saved by another reviewer. This item is as rigid as a Ken doll's abs and comes in a very small coil. It won't lay flat, therefore you can't do that.There is a remedy! It requires heat. Obtain a hair dryer and some weights (I used chairs). You can progressively unwind the plastic as the heat relaxes it, and it will lay flat without any issues or curling. As it cools, the chairmat will keep its shape.The plastic is strong and thick enough to protect my carpet. Just use some subtlety.
