I was concerned that my electric grill wouldn't function with this smoker box. I am only allowed to use an electric barbecue on my patio deck since I own a condo, and the flavor was never as good as it was with my propane BBQ. I decided to test out the smoker box. There is just enough on top of the grill for a smoker box. I put the box on the grill as directed, covered it, and started the grill to heat it up. I then filled it with dry hickory chips. Smoke began to emerge from behind the lid after 20 minutes and the grill had reached 450. I positioned the steaks on the grill and covered it. Smoke started to come out of the grill after about three minutes. By the time I was through, the chips had turned to charcoal and there was twice as much smoke as what is seen in the photograph. The next time, I'll probably use fewer chips. Was there a smoked flavor to the steak? It's difficult to explain, but there was unmistakably more of a BBQ flavor than I was used to from a simple electric grill. I'll try the mesquite chips tomorrow.

I've been eager to use my new Weber Genesis gas barbecue since Lowe's just delivered it this morning. It was time for my first cooking after a burn off and after seasoning the grates and cook chamber with bacon. Just a few pre-formed hamburger patties, nothing spectacular. I also made the decision to test out my brand-new Cave Tools smoker box to add a little outside flavor. I used a small amount of dry apple chips to barely fill the smoker box. sat back and waited for the smoke to materialize after cranking up the grill and placing the smoker box in the front left corner on top of the Flavorizer bars. The first smoke wisps were visible quite quickly. I placed the spiced, still-frozen hamburger patties on the grates, covered the container, and started the journey.I can confirm that the burgers were excellent. The Cave Tools smoker box was excellent, and the grill performed flawlessly (as expected). The chips rapidly began to smoke but never caught fire. Really, the only thing you can expect for from a straightforward tool like this is that it works. I wasn't as impressed with the cast iron boxes I've used in the past. The chips typically didn't smolder either if they didn't burn up right away. And the cast iron crates quickly started to rust, turning them red and crusty. I've also tried foil pouches, which were utterly ineffective in ever producing even a trace of smoke. Up until this point, I had pretty much given up on ever experiencing a wood smoke flavor from a gas barbecue.Last but not least, I would like to add that I have not in any way received payment for writing this review. This is because some reviewers have questioned the sincerity of the favorable evaluations that have been written here. Nobody gave me money or even just covert encouragement. There was nothing given to me for free. No payment of any kind. None. I tried using a Cave Tools V-Smoker twice before deciding to use the rectangular box, and I'm quite happy with it. The V-smoker on my Weber Genesis fit perfectly between the flavorizer bars. Although it has a beautiful design, the implementation is poor. If you place the V-box between a conventional flame bar and the "Sear-Station" flame bar, you will spend all of your time putting out the flames of burning wood since the V-box gets quite hot. Low heat is required for the V-box to function at all (and a single flame, not the sear station).No matter how high or hot you are cooking, the rectangular box sits across the top of the bars and never catches fire. The smoke is fantastic because you never need to soak your chips first and the results are much better! The box is large enough to span three flames (including the sear station), or for less smoke and better control, you may lay it sideways over a single burner.For their excellent customer service, Cave Tools replaced my first V-smoker after the end broke off. They are a top-notch business, and I have faith in them. But the square box just performs the task far more effectively.

This is what I'm using in my Weber Genesis grill. It works well enough for swiftly cooking foods since, when placed against a flavor bar, the chips start to smoke after about 15 minutes. Consequently, it's excellent for fish or for adding smoke flavor to steak. This won't work, though, if you want to properly smoke something for a few hours because you'll need to lift the grill and restock the chips multiple times.The profile would have been more trapezoidal, with a central flat place, if I had been designed it expressly for that grill, so that the sloping sides would sit flat against the flame spreader flavor bars. Currently, the unit contacts close to the top of the bars before being pulled back from them. This means that I have to run the burners (burner 1 and the sear burner) hotter than I would if there were better physical contact in order to get it smoking pretty soon.Last but not least, I'm revising an old review that I've had for a few seasons. Although it rusts, it doesn't do so quickly or badly. It's rusty, but it's still functional and isn't crumbling or scabby.The metal gauge is heavy enough, yet the price is still reasonable.

While looking for an electric smoker oven, I made the decision to attempt a stainless smoker box inside of my natural gas grill in order to save money. This box is sturdy and has so far performed nicely. It may be put on top of the grill surface or right on top of the flavor bars of the grill. Over the active rear burner, I set the smoker down on the grill surface. The meal was placed over the front two, inactive, grill burners. I cooked the chicken breasts for 4-5 hours at a temperature of roughly 220 degrees, and they turned out well. I used Jack Daniels wood chips from Amazon for the chips, but mesquite chips are also excellent. The following time, I'll experiment by placing water in one area and wood chips in the other.Notes: Although Amazon's description reads "Origin: US," a US business actually manufactures this item in China. Because I soaked the chips in water first, they didn't dry out completely enough to make enough smoke. According to a friend who frequently uses a smoker, you shouldn't soak the chips first. The only problem I encountered with this smoker was that when you lift it to add wood chips, the hefty lid tips over the entire box, and it doesn't look like the lid can be removed. Therefore, when filling the smoker, you must lean the cover against anything. If the lid could be taken off for filling and cleaning, that would be fantastic.Overall, a great sturdy device with side handles made of solid stainless steel and adjustable top vents to control smoke.

This is a strong, well-made tool that really accomplishes the task at hand. I want to address a concern brought up by other reviewers that, to be completely honest, startled me—especially coming from people who seemed like seasoned cooks. This refers to the problem of cast-iron cooking equipment rusting when it is damp. They do rust, as does all iron, and heat speeds up the process. Unless you season the box in the same way as you would a cast-iron pan. Apply oil to the smoke box, either separately or when using it for the first time, and heat it for roughly 20 minutes at high heat. Polymerization is the process by which the oil joins the iron. If you do it again the next couple of times you cook, your cast-iron utensil will be well-seasoned and never rust.I think this thing will last forever. My family has owned cast-iron skillets for at least a hundred years. I have cause to question this smokebox's invincibility.

I had some reservations. I switched to a pellet smoker at the beginning of the year. It hasn't made me as happy as I had hoped. Last week, I made ribs, and the additional smoke from the tube made them smoky and excellent. It burned for just under 5 hours after I loaded it with pellets and started it with my torch (which takes a few minutes but is SO worth it). As a result, even when the pellet smoker is not supplying pellets to the burner, there is always smoke present. I must come up with a better location. After examining what felt like 10,000 smoke boxes, cylinders, etc., I ultimately decided on this one primarily due to the cost and appearance. I made no mistakes!This tiny package is awesome!I've long preferred using a gas barbecue over a charcoal one simply because it's easier to use (which I loved). I did some research and discovered that a gas grill CAN be used to smoke. I wanted to prepare some fantastic BBQ because I'll be having company at the end of May, and it MUST have some smoked taste.I picked a whole chicken as my first victim so I could practice. The next day it was SHOWTIME when I spiced that baby up, let it set for the night, and overnight soaked my mesquite chips. I put chips in the smoker box and turned on the grill (one burner of three, on low). I had smoke and a 350 degree grill in about 15 minutes. In about an hour and a half, I had the ideal smoked chicken because I had placed the bird in the middle of the other two burners and maintained a temperature between 350 and 400. The meat was 165 degrees on the thermometer, looked fantastic, and tasted much better! I've never smoked chicken better than this, even over charcoal!After finishing my meal, I cleaned my grill and removed the burned chips from this small box so it would be ready for the next time. You cannot even tell it has been used, other from a slight discoloration. It is quite well made.You can't go wrong with this little baby if you're looking for an excellent smoker box at a good price.Happy eating and smoking!UPDATE: I'm still in awe of this tiny box! I have been practicing for THE BIG ONE, a pork shoulder, by using it to the hilt with chicken (whole and chopped) chops, burgers, and so on. I finished.I successfully fired up the grill and smoking box before putting the huge ole shoulder on. I maintained a temperature of 350 to 400 degrees. I had no shortage of soaked mesquite chips. I replenished the box after two hours and continued doing so for approximately seven hours. The odor was terrible. I assumed I would need to grab my shotgun to fend off the neighbors. haha I removed the shoulder and shredded it in my large crockpot after seven hours with a meat thermometer reading of 180 degrees. It remained there until my visitors arrived an hour later, still on high.No BBQ restaurant within 50 miles could compete with me. Everyone gushed!The box is back, and YOU'LL LOVE IT!
